Re: [ultralightbiking] Tyvek breathability

little more water protection under the tarp if it's windy, I know
it's not water -proof-. This idea got me to thinking of sizing the
material large enough to wrap over the whole bag, leaving the down
wind side open to breathe. Or, if it's really cold maybe wrapping my
bag in it. I know Tyvek does breathe, but do any of you know if it
would breathe well enough to avoid condensation in this application?
I'm doubtful. On clear nights it would also work well to protect the
bag from dew. I probably should just make one with water proof
breathable fabric but the Tyvek would sure be quick and easy.

Hi Gary,

I'm not sure how breathable the tyvek is, but I've seen on the web several people that seem to use a tyvek groundcloth with a foot pocket. Just a length of tyvek doubled over at the foot end (maybe a couple of feet) with the edged taped or sewn. You then stick the foot end of your bag in the foot pocket to keep it from getting wet from any sideways blown rain that might get under your tarp.

Cheers

Dan

Tyvek is somewhat breathable, more like long-term migration, sort of like the membrane in an egg shell. That's what makes it so good for wrapping houses. When...
