What do you define as 'ultra-light'?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #896 of 1754 |
Hi all --

As a newbie to the list, what do you consider 'ultra-light' touring?

We are looking to be about 20kg of gear each, including panniers but
not food/water/bike for an extended tour (we being me and my husband).
Haven't really tried to knock that down too much, but then we haven't
been on the road yet either! A few days may see some stuff go.

How does that compare? Heavy as heck? So-so? I have a hunch it is not
in the ultra-light category, which appeals to me yet also worries me
as I don't want to be without some comforts.

Eating cold food until we find a restaurant, for example, is not an
option. I want a stove so I can have coffee in the morning and hot
food at night. Not to mention the cost factor that would come with
eating out frequently.

Nice to meet you all.

Friedel

Well, I'm not "ultra light" (as this list defines it), but 20kg each is pretty heavy. I travel about as light as you can travel to be 100% camping sufficient....

Hi Freidel and welcome! I'd say that with 20kg (44lbs) of weight you will be very - uncomfortable- on any uphill grade you encounter. I have no doubt you can...
