If you turn it sideways with the seams of the bottle lining up with the frame of the bike, it should fit better without protruding too much. You should be able to get it to fit and still pedal without touching the bottle. This seems to work better with AL bottle cages than carbon since you can open them up a little if you need. Also if you need to, empty or drink a little from the bottle to fit the frame size or bottle cage, but don't forget to take out the extra air from the bottle before you cap it. I would recommend strong AL bottle cages to handle the extra weight. In the picture I sent I used a 2.4L water bottle with 2L of water in it. The 2L bottle seems to be too tall.
