Jim and I finished our GDR ride last week. Details in our blog
GDR07.blogspot.com
If you are interested in reading more about the ride, it's easiest to
read the introduction in the three earliest posts from July and then
skip everything until the handful of October posts labeled Post Trip
Summary. If you're planning to ride the GDR, check back later after
we've posted some very detailed information about specific cafes and
campsites.
As Gary noted in his recent post about our stay with him, I think we
were traveling about 50% lighter than the other eleven GDR riders we
saw on the route. On the other hand, we probably had twice as much as
the GDR racers carry - I'd say we were traveling light, but not
ultralight. We were thoughtful about every item we brought, but we
didn't make any sacrifices regarding comfort or convenience. I'm SURE
that the lighter load made the trip a heck-of-a-lot more enjoyable
than it would have been with the big loads most people were pulling in
trailers.
Amy, Palo Alto
P.S. - if you're tempted by the GDR, go for it. It's fantastic.
