Ok, so we need to decide whether the van is going to leave saturday or
sunday. I know there are some people in the van that have exams
monday and they would like to get back saturday so they have sunday to
study (david, josh, and others). I personally would like to leave
saturday if we don't advance to play on sunday. What does everyone
else who is riding in the van think???

we have atleast two cars and the van driving up to north carolina this
weekend. one car because we all couldn't fit in the van and they wanna
stay, another because they need/want to get home to study sunday,
leaving more room in the van. maybe after the weekend we could tally
up the totals for gas and renting the van and dip into some club money
or just spread it out evenly amongst all of us?

Congratulations to everyone qualifying for AC Regionals. Best of luck
this weekend getting those spots to nationals. I have some important
guidelines for playing with observers (some of you may recognize this
information from years past). Print this out and share it with your
team on the way to Charlotte.
First of all, remember why observers are there. Don't get freaked out
or intimidated, they are not there to make your game harder. The
primary purpose of observers is to help keep the game running smoothly
by reducing down time between points and during disputed calls. In
essence, they are there to help you and your ultimate experience.
Second, remember where they come from. They are volunteers, ultimate
players just like you, and fans of college ultimate. I've had some
trouble getting a crew together b/c people have seen/heard of bad
experiences between players and observers. Please treat them with the
same respect you would treat other tournament volunteers, players, and
fans.
Now here's a list of things you should know in an observed game.
BETWEEN POINTS
-Observers keep a time limit, with the goal of having a pull 90 seconds
after the previous score.
-The offense is given 70 seconds to set up and then the D has 20 seconds
to match and pull.
-You will hear/see 20, 10, and 5 second warnings for those time limits.
Two raised fists means 20, one raised fist means 10, one open hand means 5.
-For the offense (receiving team) to be set, they need one foot on the
line and 7 players on the field holding their position. (Coaches, that
means you're off the field!)
-The defense (pulling team) only needs to be on or behind the line when
they pull.
DURING THE GAME
-Observers' bodies are neutral. If the disc hits them, it's still in
play. If they're in your way, just keep cutting/throwing and they will
move. The defense can call picks if the offense uses the observer to
obstruct them. (Hopefully this will never be possible!)
-When calls are made by players, YOU STILL WORK THEM OUT NORMALLY!
There can and should be contested fouls, discs sent back to the thrower,
etc... in an observed game. Ultimate is still a self-refereed sport.
-If any player involved in a call is not satisfied with a contest and
wants a third party ruling, they can then go to the observer. (This
means with a verbal acknowledgment/question for a ruling. Staring at
the observer during the dispute will not get you a ruling) ONLY the
players involved in the call can ask for an observer ruling! Not other
players on the field, on the sideline, not coaches, not fans, etc...
-If players are taking a long time to discuss a call, the observer may
step in and ask them to figure it out soon or offer assistance if the
game is being slowed down.
-When you go to the observer, make sure he/she knows exactly what the
dispute is. This may require a brief explanation of what/why foul
you're calling. However, do not continuously lobby the observer with
your opinion.
-Once the observer makes a ruling, it's done. Please heed that ruling
and continue the game. Note the observer's ruling may be to send it
back to the thrower.
WARNINGS/PENALTIES
-I'm not going to get into all the different warnings about exceeding
time limits, being offsides, team misconduct, etc... Just remember that
all those calls do start with a warning meaning no action is taken until
you do it again. You can read about the specific warnings/penalties at
http://www4.upa.org/observers/manual#misc (We are using the Misconduct
Foul System, not the Card System)
-Observers will not call you offsides for being one inch over or one
second past your time limit, that's not why they're there. The most
strict call you'll see in this area will be for the puller, who needs to
stay behind/on the line, b/c he/she is gaining field position on the
pull once they're past the line.
-If an offsides is called, the disc is dead! The other team can drop
the pull, whatever, there will be a repull. The signal we will use for
offsides is arms forming an X over our head.
-Observers do have the power to kick players out of the game and
tournament, so behave yourselves. This includes conduct on the sideline
while watching other games.
ACTIVE/INACTIVE CALLS
-You will be notified before each observed game if in/out calls are
active. Generally, any game with two or more observers/linesmen will
have active line calls, meaning that call will be made without players
asking for it.
-All other calls are inactive, meaning the observer does not rule unless
the player's ask for a ruling. This includes up/down calls!
MISC
-As we learned two years ago, clap spikes, by order of the UPA Observer
Committee, will be ruled as turnovers by observers. This is still an
inactive call, so for that ruling to happen the other team must go to
the observer. As Mike G says, "Let's make sure we hold on to the disc!"
-If you would like to request observers for a certain game, please
contact me and I will do what I can. Observers will also be assigned to
certain games, so if you have observers, don't assume that your opponent
requested them. All "games-to-go" in both divisions will have observers.
-If observers' calls seem to not be going your way, please do not lose
confidence in them. They make each individual call as they see them,
and are not out to screw over your team.
-If you have a problem with a certain observer working your game b/c of
an incident or personal relationships, you must see me or Mike Nash to
request a different observer.
Hopefully this isn't too much info for you. If you respect the game and
each other, very little of this will come up during your play, and you
will hardly know the observers are there. Good luck and safe
competition to everyone this weekend!

Teams:
The seedings up on the UPA score reporter are final. Thanks everyone
for the input. And also, good work on securing the size bid by a
comfortable margin. Since we have two bids, we will be using the
standard 16 team/2 advance bracket format. However, we just learned
today that two of our fields are being used during the second round,
so this may stagger games just a bit. If anything changes, I'll let
you know.
Also, the forecast calls for a chance of rain this weekend. There
will be field officials on hand to let us know if/when we need to get
off the fields. They have given us assurances that we'll be able to
play through a good bit of rain, but please be cooperative should this
situation arise. I am coming up with plans for every contingency.
Thanks - only a few more days left.

Hey man! I am looking for an extra man to help me on-site at my job on Tuesday,
Wednesday, or Thursday of next week. I know its' exam week. I don't know if
anyone has those days off. But I wanted to offer it to your teammates in case
they wanted to earn some extra $ to defray the cost of all this ultimate. I
could pay them that day---$10 an hour. I could pick someone up at Waterford
Town Center. They can call me at 407-620-9630. Even if they could just do one
day that would be cool. Good luck at Regionals.

Hey everyone, I think we have been doing a good job this season working as a team and really getting better. We even see it from the news, other teams, and we made it to Regionals. Personally I really think we can do well and I think we can beat Georgia Tech. The only problem is we are getting 8-10 people out to practice. How are we going to come up with upsets if we can't have serious practices. I am sure everyone can come up with an excuse, but we need the team to be there and working hard so come to practice and get really to beat Georgia Tech. Lets show the nation that we deserve to go to the higher level tournaments, lets make it so that next year we get into whatever tournaments we want.

Just wanted to follow up and say thanks to everyone for their input.
I may not have responded but I read it all, and took it all into
account. I sent off the list to Josh for final approval, and the
final seedings should be out in the next couple of days. The format
is still up in the air until after this weekend - everyone cross their
fingers for the size bid. I will say that if we do wind up with one
bid, we will use pool play, and if we have two bids, we will use the
standard double-elim format.
A couple of other notes: we will have a trainer available at the
fields both days beginning at 7:30am. Expect games to start around
9:00 but that could be changed if we have to use pool play. If you
have sent your check, great; if not, please try to get it in the mail
soon. However, if it won't arrive by Friday, then I'd prefer you
bring it to the captain's check-in Saturday morning. That way we'll
avoid the "check in the mail" scenario Saturday morning.
A couple of teams expressed concern about the cost being high. I
understand it might seem high for a regional event, but keep in mind
that we'll be having trainers, EMT's, tournament reporters,
photographers, volunteers, etc. It's going to be a great event, and
no one is profiting off of it. However, if we do have any overages,
we will be reimbursing teams (most likely those that only play on
Saturday). Thanks for your cooperation on this.
Finally, I assume the 16 teams on this list are *coming* to regionals
next weekend. This should be a given, but I want to make sure. If
for some reason you are not attending, I need to know by tomorrow at
the latest. I think that's it for now.
Thanks
Mike

Danny getting talking about on RSD for his gold shorts!!!
Hurray we're not getting trash talked about bad spirit!
"so not all players from florida are "bad apples" (UCF has a group of
great guys [check out danny's gold shorts at regionals during their
pump up cheer. lord is it creepy/funny], FSU is pretty good for the
most part), but the ones on florida definitely give them a bad name.
the "win at all costs" attitude is fine, so long as you don't cross
the cheating line."
I was watching an episode of Ren and Stimpy, and in the episode i saw
an awesome scene with Ren all done up in war gear. I thought that
would be a cool logo... what do u guys think? I posted a picture next
to yank's of something i found close to warlike...

I'll still make the trip. I'll yell at people when you are out of breath. :)
I'll help out with stats and whatnot. I'll be Lisa's assistant for the weekend.
