U vermont has three ex-captains from the top fifteen teams in the nation last
year, two of which went to nationals...(north penn and hanover, the other being
phillips academy)...one freshman from scarsdale, and two sophmores from newton
north.

wouldn't this be more of a compilation of statistics? and not so much an article?
..seems like it might be a difficult article to write

i seem to be with a large number of people here when i say i'll be
headed out to stanford next year. can't wait to get out there, even
if some say it is too warm (though i would dispute that, having lived
in wisconsin my whole life). looking forward to meeting some of the
stanford bound students at junior nationals, can't wait

Go to www.upa.org/college and scroll down to the heading called Team Info.
There's a link under that called "Single Team" that establishes the criteria and
procedure for schools to form single teams for the UPA College Series.

Churchill Ultimate (A 1st year HS team) is most likely
sending 3 seniors to Columbia (2 guys and 1 girl) and
1 to an art school near brown (He is hoping to play
with Brown as I am positive the arts school does not
have a team)... He's 6'4" and a very good athelete,
so hopefully those guys at Brown can make that happen.

They'd be better if I had been able to coach them for
the past 4 years instead of 1, but they will still
have a pretty good head start on all the rookies who
never played in HS.

So, the USA isn't going to worlds. Everyone knows that sucks, and no one is happy about it. I know of a few players myself who will not get their shot at international competition despite deserving it. That also sucks. But the least we can do is give them some recognition. We said that we could still name the team(and a second and third). So who's gonna do that? Will applications still be sent in? Or will Michael and Tiina just name the team after Jr. Nats? I am in absolutely no position of authority, but I would like to name my picks, and then if I leave anyone out, please feel free to correct me without attacking me(Ed, from Columbia). I realize that both Yorktown and Princton have been handing out some beatdowns, but I never played against either team when I was a Junior, so I don't know their top guys. So if you guys are out there and want to nominate a player or two, feel free to do that. Tyler can probably help me out with the Philips academy guys. Remember this is not official. If I leave your name off the list, it does not mean you suck. It means that I probably don't know you. And without further Adieu...

Why doesn't someone help me fill in the holes??

Let me add Beacon's captain Matt Shapiro to the list. He's been a starter
since his frosh year, gradually taking a bigger and bigger year. This
year, Beacon has a young team, having graduated six seniors each of the
last two years, including Carmelo last year. Aside from Matt, there are
five players with one year of experience and ten new players this year. It
was very much looking like a rebuilding year for Beacon, but as the year
goes on, that's looking less and less the case.

Matt is unquestionably our leader on the field. He spent the summer and
fall working on so many parts of our game, but more importantly, Matt sets
a tone for the whole team. Beacon has no fields at our school, and there's
no field space anywhere in Manhattan after school, so we practice at 6:45
every morning. For four years, Matt has been there every day on time. This
year, when it would have been so easy for him to get frustrated, he's
taken the challenge of making sure that he leaves a strong team for
Beacon's future, still there every day. And it's paying off. After
starting 0-3, Beacon went to the Semis of Hop-on-Pop B, and we're looking
to do some damage both at Amherst this weekend and at New York States in
June. And it's due, in large part, to the example that Matt has set.

So, for both his play on the field where he clearly belongs with the names
on that list, and, perhaps more importantly, because of the way he
completely embodies the Spirit of the Game, I think that Matt Shapiro
belongs on the USA Worlds team this year.

There are three kids this year from phillips who could run with many of the top
players in the country for juniors : greg booth, nadeem mazen, and krishna rao.
they've all played for about four years now and hopefully will lead the team to
good things at amherst this weekend.

i haven't seen any of them play this year, so i couldn't pick one over the other

another idea is to just name an all-tournament team, based on individual
performance at nationals. no, it doesn't include people who are deserving of
being on a US national team that don't go to jnats, however, it makes the
selection process far less arbitrary and we don't necessarily have to pretend
that it's a "national team." in lieu of a national team, it's probably the next
best thing, but it's also something that could be done in addition to a national
team. we could do the all-tournament team, of say, 15, and then maybe do a
national team of 15 that includes the top 10 from the all-tournament team and 5
other kids from non-nationals teams, who have either been examined or applied or
whatever.

just throwing out lots of meaningless ideas and numbers. inspired, naturally,
by middle school soccer.

Hey Adam,

When you mentioned the "Top Guy from St. Johns", were you referring to St. John's-Ravenscourt of Winnipeg?  If so, great call!  In fact, two former SJR players and two current players are going to be at Worlds, playing for Canada (Adam, Andrei, Brent and Eric).

The top two guys and captains of Yorktown are Tony Duff and Jason Ng.  Tony's got height, knowledge of the game, and incredible spirit.  Jason's the most athletic juniors player I've seen, and has the strongest all-around game of the juniors I've seen.  Be on the look out for Kevin Riley (junior) next year.  He's got throws and is well on his way to being a great player.

There are a couple of guys picking up with Yorktown from Richmond that probably deserve recognition.  Unfortunately, I don't know them, so someone else will have to put a word in for them.

Swarthmore just made nationals for the first time ever. I think they may be losing several starters, so you might find yourself in a significant role for that team by midseason or so. Best of luck.

Amherst Varsity = undefeated
Paideia = undefeated
Looking like those two will meet (again) in the finals on Sunday.
NMH, Andover and Newton North all looking strong.
VERY EXCITING!

Women...
Amherst women dominating again this year.

As for the University of Wisconsin, one of our captians has been a
Newton North ultimate Grad for the past 4 years, we have two other
players who went to Junior nationals, and around 8 other players who
played for highschool teams. Every year the freshman coming in and
trying out are getting better and better. This year will be the third
straight trip to nationals for the UW,

Word is Paideia over Amherst 15-6 in the finals.                                                           Paideia over NMH 14-10 in one semi.

Not sure about any of the other scores from any other divisions. Tiina, Jim can you fill us in? Who made the quarters? Who was in the other semi? What about the women's and B divisions?

I know that Amherst was playingNewton North in the other semis, Newton was up at one point, and Amherst came back to win.  I'm not sure about the score.  As for the quarterfinalists and other games, i'm not sure.

I don't think there were "quarterfinalists". It was pool play, and
then the top two from each pool went at it. Here's how Andover did
on Sunday:

Amherst over Andover - 14-7 (but Andover was up 4-2 in the beginning,
sense the bias?)

Phillips Academy over Andover for 5th place - 15-12

Joe Kolchinsky
Andover Ultimate

PS. I also know that NMH lost to Newton North for third place.
