Quad City Times

Drew Otten was browsing the Internet the other night when he decided to visit the United Hockey League Web site.

Looking at the team rosters from a year ago puzzled the 26-year-old.

"I still don't know how we lost with all that talent," the hard-nosed, hard-hitting forward said Wednesday after signing for a second year with the Quad-City Mallards.

But, truthfully, Otten does know why the Mallards were swept out of the playoffs by Muskegon.

There weren't enough players who were willing to throw their bodies around, sacrifice and play two-way hockey. There weren't enough players like Otten.

"We didn't have enough guys who were willing to lay it on the line," said Otten, who had 11 goals and 20 assists in 71 games as a rookie. "We had a lot of guys who were scared of getting hit, and guys not being willing to take a hit. Guys weren't on the same page as coach (Paul Gillis) and Howard (Cornfield, Mallards president). We had a lot of individuals who wanted to play their own game instead of the team's game."

With one year of professional hockey under his belt, Otten says he's ready to step up and be a leader, perhaps even the leader.

Otten has spent this summer working out and lifting to help improve his offense.

He wants to score at least 20 goals this year.

He wants to improve his checking, and he wants to play on the power play.

"I played a power play here and there last year," Otten said. "I'll take a beating all day long if I can sit in front of the net on the power play and work to deflect pucks."

More than all those things, Otten wants to make the Mallards better by making himself and the skaters around him better.

Otten talks like it's going to happen. He talks like the rest of the Mallards better jump on board.

He's only months removed from his rookie season, but Otten  sounds like he's ready to lead the 2004 Mallards, perhaps with a "C" on his chest.

The Muskegon Fury's top playmaker and face-off king has signed on for another season.

Todd Robinson, who finished third in the United Hockey League last season with 106 points, will be back for his fifth season with the Fury.

"We have a great group of guys here," said Robinson, a 25-year-old centerman from Trail, British Columbia.

"We are all looking forward to the chance of repeating as champions of the league."

Robinson is generally regarded as the top assist man in the UHL, leading the league last season with 81 assists and having at least one assist in 13 straight games early in the season. He excelled at setting up top scorers Robin Bouchard and Brant Blackned.

"T-Rob" is one of the smallest players on the Fury, listed at 5-8 and 175 pounds, but Coach Todd Nelson knows his contributions were one of the biggest reasons the team was able to sweep through the playoffs for the Colonial Cup title.

"He runs our power-play and penalty-killing units," said Nelson. "What sometimes is overlooked about him is his defensive excellence, especially when it comes to winning the crucial defensive-zone faceoffs at critical times in big games."

Robinson played his first pro season in 1999-2000 with Idaho and Colorado Springs of the West Coast Hockey League and was named the league's rookie of the year after finishing with 101 points.

He joined the Fury the next year and has already risen to fourth in all-time franchise scoring with 337 points and third with 239 assists.

The top moment of his Muskegon career came on May 4, 2002, when he scored a breakaway goal in overtime as the Fury beat Elmira to win the Colonial Cup title. He was named the UHL playoffs most valuable player.

Robinson has been incredibly consistent as well, averaging 93 points per year in his first five professional seasons.

He believes the team has a good chance to repeat as league champions.

"After our last championship in 2002, we came back the next year and didn't play as well," said Robinson, a UHL all-star last year. "We want to correct that this time."

Robinson is the sixth player the Fury has announced as signed for next season. The others are wingers Robin Bouchard, Rustyn Dolyny and Scott Hollis, center Billy Collins and defenseman Tyler Palmer.

Cloutier returns for seventh season in Adirondacks

Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Frostbite today officially finalized the contract of veteran center Sylvain Cloutier, it was announced by Frostbite Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Marc Potvin.  The parties had agreed in principal on June 25th.  Cloutier returns to Adirondack for his seventh season.  The two-way centerman played in Adirondack for five years with the Red Wings, from 1993-98 and last season with Adirondack of the UHL.   Cloutier spent an additional three seasons in upstate New York playing for the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL) for three years, from 1999-2002.  As per team policy, terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

Cloutier, 30, averaged over a point per game last season in Adirondack tallying 36 in 33 games.  He also saw time in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch and Albany River Rats.  The Canadian has played in 778 pro-hockey games, including time in the NHL, IHL, AHL, and ECHL.  Two years ago as the captain of the Houston Aeros (AHL), the 6’0’’ 195-pounder helped bring the Calder Cup to Houston recording 15 points (4-11) in the regular season and 6 points (3-3) in the playoffs.  Before joining the Aeros for the 2002-03 season, Cloutier played in Albany for three seasons with the River Rats (AHL).  In the capital city, Cloutier tallied 110 points (37-73) with 329 penalty minutes.

Cloutier began his professional career in the Adirondacks when he was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 3rd round, 70th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.  In his first season he was assigned to the Red Wings (AHL), where he spent the next five seasons playing at the Glens Falls Civic Center.  In 287 games with Adirondack, Cloutier amassed 148 points (45-103), along with 609 penalty minutes.

Cloutier not only won the championship with the Aeros, but brought five other teams to the playoffs as well.  In 1997-98 after spending the majority of the season with the A-Wings, the lefty was called up to the Detroit Vipers (IHL) where he led the team to the finals.

Cloutier becomes the third player to sign with the Frostbite for the upcoming season, joining veteran left wing Hugo Belanger and veteran right wing Frank Littlejohn.

Season Tickets for the 2004-05 season are on sale now at the Frostbite front office located at the Glen Street entrance of the Glens Falls Civic Center.  Tickets may be purchased at the office between 9AM and 6PM Monday through Thursday and from 9AM to 5PM Friday or by calling 926-PUCK.  Also, get all the latest news on the Adirondack Frostbite by going to www.frostbitehockey.com.

The Quad-City Mallards will open the 2004-05 quest for a Colonial Cup with five straight road games before taking on the United Hockey League’s newest team, Kansas City, on Oct. 30 at The Mark of the Quad-Cities in the home opener.

The Mallards will begin the season Oct. 15 at Rockford.

The unbalanced schedule has the Mallards facing Kansas City, the Missouri River Otters, who went 0-12 against Quad-Cities last year, and Rockford 12 times each.

Quad-City fans will have the opportunity to see every UHL team at The Mark this season, including Richmond, a team the Mallards did not play last year.

Other interesting home dates include Nov. 6, when Mallards nemesis Jim Duhart and the expansion Danbury Trashers come to town, Nov. 21; when defending champion Muskegon makes its first visit to The Mark and Nov. 27 when the Tarry Cup champion Fort Wayne Komets invade the Quad-Cities.

It took nearly a month, but the United Hockey League's annual board of governors meetings were finally completed on Tuesday.

Meetings began on June 10 in Las Vegas and after three days, the meetings were adjourned until their completion on Tuesday in St. Louis.

"It did take a while, but we have made some pretty significant rules changes," said Muskegon Fury president Tony Lisman. "We got quite a bit accomplished."

League alignment: The league will go from two divisions to three, with a total of 14 teams. The Western Division will include Fort Wayne, Missouri, Quad City, Rockford and an expansion team, expected to be located in Kansas City.

The Central Division will include Muskegon, Flint, Kalamazoo, Port Huron and the expansion Motor City Mechanics.

In the Eastern Division will be Richmond, Elmira, the newly renamed Adirondack Frostbite and the expansion Danbury Thrashers.

Rules: Icing infractions will be whistled dead once the puck crosses the goal line. Also, the UHL will experiment with the removal of the red line, thus eliminating the two-line pass. That experiment will take place during the preseason only.

Salary cap: With the UHL increasing the regular season from 76 to 80 games, the salary cap has been increased to $260,000 for the regular season.

Veteran rule: The maximum number of veterans on an active roster has been increased from six to seven. A veteran is defined as a player who has played 280 or more regular-season games as a professional in North America or Europe. A veteran goaltender is any goalie who has played 16,800 or more minutes.

A rookie is defined as a player with less than 40 games of experience in the regular season or a goaltender with 2,400 minutes or fewer.

Playoffs: The top two teams in each division will qualify for the postseason along with the next two teams in points, regardless of division. Division winners will be seeded 1-3 and the remaining five will be seeded 4-8, based on points.

All playoff rounds will be the best-of-seven series.

Executive committee: Michael Franke from Fort Wayne was named the chairman of the board, Quad City's Mike Tatoian, Port Huron's Kristen Dixon and Kalamazoo's Paul Pickard are the vice chairmen.

More information from the meetings is expected to be released in the next couple of days, including results of the expansion draft.

The United Hockey League is adding another division for the 2004-05 season and, apparently, another team.

The executive committee announced numerous on- and off-ice changes for the upcoming season Wednesday.

In the press release, the league included a 14-team, three-division alignment for the upcoming season.

The problem?

They’ve added two expansion franchises this offseason to the 11 teams that participated in the league in 2003-04.

The Quad-City Mallards will remain in the Western Division, along with the Fort Wayne Komets, Missouri River Otters, Rockford IceHogs, and perhaps Kansas City, which the Kansas City Star reported in May would be the UHL’s newest franchise.

The league would not comment on Kansas City being the 14th franchise when the QUAD-CITY TIMES contacted them a few weeks ago, and the press release lists “Expansion Team” as the fifth member of the Western Conference.

The Eastern Division will have four teams — Adirondack Frostbite, Elmira Jackals, Richmond RiverDogs and the Danbury Trashers, an expansion team — while the Central Division will consist of all Michigan teams, including the Motor City Mechanics, another expansion franchise, Flint Generals, Kalamazoo Wings, Port Huron Beacons and Muskegon Fury, the defending champions.

The league also switched playoff formats, as the top two teams in each division as well as the two teams with the next highest point total will qualify for the postseason. All three rounds will be best-of-seven series, with the teams being reseeded after the first round.

The Mallards will play 40 games at The Mark of the Quad-Cities in 2004-05, as the league increased the amount of games from 76 to 80 and raised the salary cap to $260,000 — up from $250,000 last year — to compensate for the expanded schedule.

Several other changes were made for the 2004-05 season:

• Teams will be allowed to have seven veterans — players who have played in more than 280 professional games — on their rosters.

• Players will not need to touch the puck for icing infractions. Play will be whistled dead once the puck crosses the goal line.

• The league will experiment in the preseason by taking out the red line, thus eliminating two-line passes.

By Brendan Savage
THE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITION

The Danbury Trashers made Jim Duhart an offer he couldn't refuse. When the expansion Trashers asked the Flint Generals for permission to talk to Duhart about a possible trade, Duhart originally wasn't interested.

Duhart has been a longtime fan favorite in Flint. He's been the Generals' captain the past three seasons. And his wife, Lori, grew up in Grand Blanc, where the couple own a home.

But when Duhart heard the deal the Trashers were offering, he couldn't say no. So, he agreed to a trade that sent him to Danbury, Conn., in exchange for the No. 1 pick in the United Hockey League expansion draft, two selections in next year's amateur draft, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

"I'm excited," said Duhart, who was in Danbury for today's press conference announcing the trade. "At first, when it was brought up, I was kind of surprised. But I talked to Danbury and they want to win and base a lot of it around me. Lori and I have always wanted to go out East, so why not?

"It's too good of an opportunity (to pass up). It's a team that wants to win. It's way too good of an opportunity for me and my family to stay" in Flint.

In Duhart, the Trashers are getting the UHL's top goal scorer. Duhart had a career-high 56 last season, the third time in his 11-year pro career he's topped the 50-goal barrier.

At some point during the season, Duhart will be skating alongside another UHL star as the Trashers also traded for center Brent Gretzky.

Duhart said the Trashers gave him a three-year contract and also offered him a coaching position when he's done playing. He said that made it impossible to stay in Flint, where he helped the Generals win the 1996 Colonial Cup.

"It was a hard decision," said Duhart, who turns 33 this month. "Robbie (Nichols, Flint's coach) is a friend of mine. He helped me get 56 goals to lead the league and I wanted to be part of Kevin (Kerr's) record breaker. Not to play with Bobby (Reynolds) is going to be hard.

"I had a lot of great years here. The fans were great to me. There will probably be some happy (fans). I was booed and heckled by some fans the last few years. But they'll be some sad ones, too.

"People have to realize this wasn't Robbie's choice, forcing me to go. It was my choice, my doing. It was a tough decision but one that was best for me and my family."

Two more players have been signed by the Kalamazoo

Forwards Andrew Luciuk, acquired by the K-Wings last
year in a trade with Muskegon, and David Hukalo join
goaltender Chad Alban and forward Tyler Willis as
those under contract for the new season.

Last year, Luciuk led the team in scoring with 27

If Jim Duhart repeats as the United Hockey League's
leading goal scorer, it won't be in a Flint Generals
uniform.

Duhart, who led the UHL with a career-high 56 goals
last season, has been traded from Flint to the
expansion Danbury Thrashers. The deal is expected to
be announced Friday during a news conference in
Danbury, Conn. Duhart wouldn't comment when reached at
his Grand Blanc home Wednesday night and Generals
coach Robbie Nichols originally declined comment until
learning that Danbury coach Todd Stirling had
confirmed the trade in an interview with the Port
Huron Times Herald.

"The Generals are moving in a different direction,"
Nichols reluctantly said Wednesday. "Players get in
one spot for a while and coaches do, too. Change is
good. It's a combination of that and it being a great
situation for Jim Duhart and his family to move to a
great city."

The Gen's got Danbury's expansion draft pick and
selected Tom Menicci, formerly of the Quad City
Mallards.

Kevin Kerr is the only General under contract for next
season. Kerr, who needs two goals to become the
all-time minor-league leader with 664, was scheduled
to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery today to repair
cartilage damage.

Jackals sign rookie forward

From the Star-Gazette

The Elmira Jackals have signed their first player for
next season: 6-foot-4, 230-pound rookie forward Mike
Duffy.

The forward spent the past three years at Division III
St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. He had 19
goals, including four game winners, and 11 assists in
27 games last season. He had 31 goals and 25 assists
in 69 career games at St. Michael's.

"Mike has proven to be very strong along the boards,"
Jackals coach Todd Brost said in a release. "He is
very coachable and will bring great scoring potential
to our team."

A native of Malone, N.Y., Duffy played nine games with
Division I Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute during the
1999-2000 season.

Chris Grenville, one of the most prolific scorers in
minor-league hockey, has joined the Fort Wayne Komets.

The signing came Wednesday morning, about two years
later than everyone in the Komets organization
initially hoped it would.

After two years of waiting, he finally becomes a Fort
Wayne Komet, general manager David Franke said with a
chuckle.

The Komets had acquired the rights to Grenville, a
right wing, in the summer of 2002, when a dispersal
draft was held because the Binghamton (N.Y.) Icemen
had folded. But rather than joining the Komets,
Grenville opted to bolt from the UHL and play for the
Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League, where he
would also be an assistant coach.

The Mallards announced their first signing of the
season, returning Jeff Doyle to the team for the
2004-05 season.

The 21-year-old spent five years in the Ontario Hockey
League where he played 308 games and racked up 628
penalty minutes and 222 points before joining the
Mallards.

In other news, Sylvain Daigle leaves for Europe and

to the Frostbite starting this season.

29 percent of the people who voted in the teams poll
selected the name "Frostbite".

Also missing from the Fury line up will be Feasby.

Scott Feasby, the Fury's veteran defenseman and
longtime captain and known to many as "Farmer," has
announced his retirement.

Feasby, 33, played 13 pro seasons, including 11 with
the Fury. He has appeared in more Fury games than any
player in franchise history with 663 during the
regular season and 89 in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the UHL announces their thirteenth team for
the season, the Moter City Mechanics. Oh boy!

Motor City Mechanics join UHL
http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/sports/9047109.htm

The Mechanics join the expansion Danbury (Conn.)
Trashers, raising the number of UHL teams to 13. Motor
City will play in the Great Lakes Sports City Superior
Arena, which Elmira Jackals owner Mostafa Afr owned
until 2002.

The Afr-owned Michigan Falcons -- they changed their
name to the Detroit Falcons in their second season --
played in that arena from 1991 to 1996 before moving
to Port Huron, Mich. Fraser is 18 miles north of
Detroit.

The Kansas City Star has reported that Kansas City,
Mo., will also field a UHL expansion team next season.
League officials have said division alignment, among
other league news, will be announced July 8.

Chris Grenville is also the kind of guy a team wants
when it needs production. He helped lead Laredo to a
CHL championship last season and scored 45 goals
during the regular season. He's scored 30-40 goals
consistently over the last five seasons. Grenville's
signing is a boost to a Fort Wayne team that was
looking for a goal scorer for the 2004-05 season.

As far as the Fort Wayne Komets are concerned, with
the signing of Chris Grenville, it's better late than
never.

Team changes owners, plans to release details in
coming days

By MAURY THOMPSON
thompson@...
and MICHAEL LEWIS
mlewis@...

GLENS FALLS -- The Adirondack IceHawks will continue
to play uninterrupted at the Glens Falls Civic Center
under new ownership that includes ESPN hockey
commentator Barry Melrose, city officials announced
late Friday.

"We have a deal," said Civic Center Executive Director
Suzanna Bernd.

United Hockey League President Richard Brosal
confirmed at about 6:30 p.m. Friday that current
owners Art and Lori Shaver agreed to sell the team to
the new ownership group.

"Everyone involved is very ecstatic to have an oral
agreement that will go into the contract stage,"
Brosal said. "For the people of Glens Falls, we are so
pleased and so proud."

Information was not available Friday about how the
sale will affect players, coaches and other IceHawks
employees.

Dr. Eric Margenau is one of the four members of the
IceHawks' new ownership group, according to a source
close to the negotiations. Margenau is the current
owner of the Richmond RiverDogs and a past owner of
the Albany Conquest arena football team. Other details
about the ownership group were not available Friday.

Bernd said that the new owners are planning a press
conference sometime early next week.

Brosal said that it was unfortunate that the Shavers,
who brought the team to Glens Falls in 1999, ran into
financial troubles.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to Art and Lori Shaver for
five years of working tirelessly to keep hockey going
in the Adirondacks," he said.

Art Shaver could not immediately be reached for
comment after the announcement.

City officials and representatives of the new
ownership group reached agreement on a new Civic
Center lease earlier in the day on Friday, Mayor
Robert Regan said.

"We think the fans can look forward to a great future
for the team," he said.

Regan would not reveal details of the new lease
Friday, but said the city made some concessions to the
new ownership group compared with a previous agreement
the city reached with the Shavers in August.

Common Council members were briefed on the agreement
Friday afternoon and were supportive, Regan said.

Several council members said that initially the city
likely will receive slightly less revenues than in the
past, but the lease has a new feature under which the
city will receive a higher payment once attendance for
the season crosses a certain threshold.

The deal could potentially be more lucrative for the
city if Barry Melrose's celebrity status lures larger
crowds to hockey games, said 4th Ward Councilwoman
Teena Weber.

Council members expressed relief that a deal had been
struck, and that the hockey season will continue
uninterrupted.

"I think that's a necessity, not only to a quality of
life, but a necessity to the viability of the Civic
Center," said 5th Ward Councilman Scott Pauquette.

The deal ends a week of uncertainty about the future
of hockey in Glens Falls after the Warren County
Sheriff's Department seized the proceeds from
concession stands at a hockey game last weekend to
satisfy a debt owed by previous team owners Art and
Lori Shaver.

City officials met with representatives of the
ownership group for three consecutive days at City
Hall this week, conducting some of the negotiations
with principals in the group via telephone conference
calls.

Third Ward Councilman Harold "Bud" Taylor, who
participated in the negotiations, said he's impressed
with the caliber of the new ownership group.

Now, he said, it's imperative that the public show
support for the team by attending hockey games.

Apparently, the agreement reached with the new owners
does not address the more than $300,000 in delinquent
debt the Shavers owe to the city, council members
said.

First Ward Councilman John "Jack" Diamond said that it
is important the city take whatever legal measures are
necessary to collect the money from the Shavers.

Other debts have also become public in recent weeks.

A lawyer for a Westchester County-based payroll
services firm publicly threatened last month to take
legal action to collect more than $15,000 he says the
team owes his clients.

And last weekend, the Warren County Sheriff's
Department seized about $8,100 in revenues from Civic
Center concession stands to help satisfy a $50,000
judgment for debt the Shavers owe to Michael
Cantanucci, president of New Country Motor Group in
Clifton Park.

The city temporarily took over operation of concession
stands at Civic Center events on Friday, Regan said.

No alcohol is being sold while the stands are under
city management.

Councilwoman at Large Kay Saunders said that she has
mixed feeling about the developments in recent days.

While she is pleased the hockey team will continue to
play at the Civic Center, she said it's unfortunate
that the Shavers ran into financial troubles.

"They came in here (in 1999) sincerely trying to
help," she said.

Sports Editor Greg Brownell contributed to this
report.

ESPN analyst, ex-coach part of ownership team

By MAURY THOMPSON
thompson@...

GLENS FALLS -- Barry Melrose, a player and coach with
the former Adirondack Red Wings, said Tuesday that he
is part of the group that is attempting to buy the
Adirondack IceHawks hockey team.

Melrose, currently a hockey commentator with the ESPN
cable network, said he is involved in the effort
because he wants to see hockey successful in Glens
Falls, whether it be with current IceHawks owners Art
and Lori Shaver or someone else.

"I live in Glens Falls," Melrose said. "I want to see
hockey strong here. I want to see the Civic Center
viable. I want to see the Civic Center the way it used
to be."

He would not identify the other members of the
potential ownership group, but he said the number of
people involved is "small." He did say that he is the
only member of the group who lives in the area.

Mayor Robert Regan and other city officials met with
representatives of the ownership group for several
hours Tuesday at City Hall.

The parties were expected to meet again today but were
likely several days away from reaching any type of
agreement, Regan said at the conclusion of the
closed-door meeting. He would not reveal any
particulars of the discussion.

"We've got, first and foremost, to get to know the
group and check them out," he said. "That takes time."

Once the two sides reach an agreement, it would still
have to be approved by the Shavers, who so far have
not been directly involved in negotiations between the
city and the potential new ownership group.

Regan said he had been funneling information to Art
Shaver through United Hockey League President Richard
Brosal. He said Tuesday he did not know Shaver's
position on a potential sale.

But the mayor said he hopes an agreement can be
reached whereby ownership would change without any
interruption in the team's schedule.

"The league very much wants that to happen," he said.

Efforts to contact Shaver for comment late Tuesday
were unsuccessful, but earlier in the day he said he
was not aware of any effort by Melrose "or anyone he's
associated with" to buy the team.

"I've never had one conversation about selling my team
with Barry Melrose or anyone else associated with
him," Shaver said.

Efforts to contact Brosal also were unsuccessful late
Tuesday.

Melrose, who was not present at Tuesday's meeting with
city officials, said in a telephone interview that he
was part of an effort to buy the team two years ago,
but he said Shaver decided at that time not to sell.

Regan said he and Civic Center Executive Director
Suzanna Bernd were aware of Melrose's previous attempt
to buy the team and contacted him in September when it
became apparent that Shaver might not be able to keep
the team afloat financially.

Shaver missed a Sept. 15 deadline to begin making
payments on more than $300,000 in delinquent debt to
the city. The debt to the city is owed by Blue Line
Concessions, a separate company owned by the Shavers
that operates food concessions at the Civic Center.
The concessions company has failed to pay a portion of
the commissions it owes the city.

The concessions company pays the city a 55 percent
commission on food sales at events other than hockey
games. It retains 100 percent of receipts from food
sales on game nights.

In another sign of financial pressures on the team, a
lawyer for a Westchester County payroll services firm
publicly threatened last month to take legal action to
collect more than $15,000 he says the team owes his
clients.

And on Friday, the Warren County Sheriff's Department
seized about $8,100 in revenues from Civic Center
concession stands to help satisfy a $50,000 judgment
for debt the Shavers owe to Michael Cantanucci,
president of New Country Motor Group in Clifton Park.
Sheriff Larry Cleveland has said that the department
likely will make additional seizures to satisfy the
judgment.

Regan said he believes the hockey team could be viable
under ownership by the Melrose group, given Melrose's
experience and contacts in professional hockey.

After coaching the Adirondack Red Wings from 1989-92,
Melrose went on to coach the Los Angeles Kings of the
National Hockey League for three seasons.

Members of the city Common Council voiced support
Tuesday for Melrose and the potential new ownership
group.

"I would think that the fact that Barry was involved
would make people feel comfortable," said 3rd Ward
Councilman Harold "Bud" Taylor, who attended Tuesday's
meeting with representatives of the ownership group.

"I think he obviously brings a great deal of
credentials to the table and a lot of creditability,"
said 2nd Ward Councilman Peter McDevitt, who did not
attend the meeting but said he was aware of Melrose's
involvement.

One way or another, city officials must try to ensure
that the team finishes its season, for the sake of
season ticket holders, said Councilwoman-at-Large Kay
Saunders, who herself is a season ticket holder.

Saunders said she had heard rumors of Melrose's
involvement but did not have any direct knowledge of
the negotiations.

Staff writer Michael Lewis and Sports Editor Greg
Brownell contributed to this report.

GLENS FALLS -- City and United Hockey League officials
are negotiating with a new ownership group that would
buy out the assets of the financially beleaguered
Adirondack IceHawks and keep the team in the city,
Mayor Robert Regan said Monday.

Regan would not reveal the identity of the potential
owners, but said he expects a deal will be reached
before the end of the current season.

"Our guiding principles at the moment are twofold --
to first ensure that our financial interests are
protected, and second that hockey continues to stay at
the Civic Center not only for the rest of the season,
but for years to come," he said.

The team's financial problems have become increasingly
public in recent weeks.

On Friday, the Warren County Sheriff's Department
seized the proceeds of concession sales during an
IceHawks game to satisfy a civil court judgment
against the team and its owners.

The Sheriff's Department seized about $8,100 to
satisfy a $50,000 judgment for debt owed to Michael
Cantanicci, president of New Country Motor Group in
Clifton Park.

A lawyer for a Westchester County-based payroll
services firm also has threatened to take legal action
to collect more than $15,000 he says the team owes his
client.

And the team's owners, Art and Lori Shaver, are
delinquent in more than $300,000 in debt to the city.

Regan said that he and Civic Center Executive Director
Suzanna Bernd began quietly working with UHL
Commissioner Richard Brosal in September to find a new
owner for the team.

Neither Brosal nor the Shavers could immediately be
reached to comment on Monday.

GLENS FALLS -- The Adirondack IceHawks' financial woes
deepened Friday night when the Warren County Sheriff's
Department seized the proceeds of the concession sales
during the IceHawks game against Port Huron to satisfy
a civil court judgment against the team.

More than a dozen sheriff's officers went into the
Glens Falls Civic Center during the third period of
the IceHawks' home game, closing the concession stands
and taking all of the money as they "executed" a
$50,000 civil judgment against team owners Art and
Lori Shaver.

Plain-clothes and uniformed officers physically took
the money from the registers at each stand and in
Heritage Hall, leaving those in line wondering what
was going on.

Sheriff Larry Cleveland said the department was acting
at the request of a lawyer for a Clifton Park car
dealership owner who got a judgment in state Supreme
Court against the Shavers, the IceHawks and Blue Line
Concessions, which sells food and beverages at the
center and is owned by the Shavers.

"The law says that we can do what's called a property
execution, seize the money that is owed," said
Cleveland, who was among the officers at the center
during the 9:15 p.m. seizure. "We don't do many of
them, probably a few a year."

State law requires sheriff's officers to enforce
judgments when asked to do so, Cleveland said, and
Friday night's seizure was approved beforehand by
acting state Supreme Court Justice Philip Berke.

Cleveland said it was not known late Friday how much
money was seized. He said the department's officers
had no trouble during the seizure.

Lori Shaver would not discuss the matter Friday night,
telling a reporter "Go find a story somewhere else"
and closing the door in his face.

"What are you, trying to ruin us?" she asked the
reporter.

Suzanna Bernd, director of the Civic Center, said
Friday night the seizure had nothing to do with the
center itself. Blue Line Concessions keeps 100 percent
of the proceeds from concession sales on hockey
nights, she said.

The judgment was obtained by Clifton Park resident
Michael Cantanucci, the president of the New Country
Motor Group, which operates several auto dealerships
in the Capital District.

Court records show Cantanucci loaned the Shavers
$70,156.24 in January and February 2002, with the
understanding it be repaid in August 2002. When it
wasn't paid, Cantanucci agreed to take $50,000 to
satisfy the debt and the Shavers signed a legal
document known as a "confession of judgment" last
Sept. 16, court records show. Cleveland said the
Sheriff's Department had also seized one of the team's
bank accounts, but it contained only $22.

IceHawks remain winless in shootouts, Fall to Richmond
1-0

GOALIES DICKIE AND GINGRAS TURN IN AWESOME
PERFORMANCES

Adirondack IceHawks Press Release

Glens Falls, NY The IceHawks and RiverDogs had many
scoring opportunities, but it was the goaltending that
shined tonight as Richmond beat Adirondack in a
shootout 1-0. Each goalie was perfect through
regulation: Scott Dickie for the Icehawks making 25
saves and Maxime Gingras for the RiverDogs making 30.
Adirondack could not find a way to score in the
shootout though and suffered their fourth shootout
loss of the season. Richmond remains unbeaten in the
shootout, a perfect 5-0. The IceHawks fall to 7-9-4 on
the season, while Richmond is 13-4-0.

All three periods saw back and forth action with any
breakaway opportunities stopped by either goalie. For
the RiverDogs, they got their best opportunities to
score on the man advantage, but hit the post three
different times tonight and Dickie stood on his head
to make save after save including one very impressive
on late in the third period. The IceHawks had a few
breakaway opportunities of their own including a three
on zero lead by Sylvain Cloutier, but was unable to
score as Gingras came up with some huge saves as well.

The IceHawks return to action tomorrow against
Richmond. It is a post-game skate with a post-game
party to follow in Heritage Hall. Also, bring your
teddy bears for the teddy bear toss. After the first
IceHawks goal throw your teddy bears onto the ice and
they will be distributed to following week to kids in
local hospitals. Opening face off is at 7:35 p.m.

Center or by calling 798-0202. Season seats, group

Once again, the Richmond Riverdogs topped Just
Hockey's/In the Crease's AA Top 20 teams.

"The RiverDogs lead the UHL in goals for, despite the
fact their leading scorer is seventh in the loop in
scoring. A warning is their seventh-ranked defense."

The Quad City Mallards remain in the third position.

"Like Laredo, the key in Quad City is depth. This club
ranks third in the league in goals per game, but only
one player is averaging a point per game or better."

The Columbus Stars continues to hold down the sixth
position.

"This is an excellent team, but with bad fans. The
Stars organization has done everything in their power
to entertain, how about going to a game?"

And finally Muskegeon hangs on to the 20th position.

"Robin Bouchard and Todd Robinson rank 1st and 3rd in
the UHL scoring race, respectively. And now Jeff
Nelson is back. Watch out!"

Adirondack to hit the road for the holiday

Adirondack IceHawks Press Release

Glens Falls, NY At the beginning of the second
period the Generals scored on a 5 on 3 to take a
two-goal lead and held the rest of the way to beat the
IceHawks 5-2. Flint got out to an early 2-1 lead on
goals by John DiPace and Kevin Kerr. In the second,
Jim Duhart scored on the 5 on 3 and the Generals added
two in the third to seal the deal. Adirondack got
goals from Frank Littlejohn and Sylvain Cloutier, but
the IceHawks were unable to pick up a point in every
game this week. With the loss, the IceHawks are now
5-7-3 on the season, while Flint is 6-5-2.

Flint opened up a 1-0 lead when DiPace scored just
over a minute into the first period. The IceHawks tied
the game on a Frank Littlejohn goal. Frank put a hard
slap shot in front of the net past Generals goalie Dan
MacIntyre to tie the game at one. The Generals retook
the lead halfway through the period when Kerr scored
his first of two goals on the evening. With time
expired after the first, Jeff Ewasko took a double
minor for roughing and slashing Kevin Kerr, which gave
the Generals a 5 on 3 to start the second period.

Flint took control on the two-man advantage and scored
46 seconds into the period. The Generals were unable
to score with the remaining 5 on 4 advantage and the
IceHawks remained in the game. On a power play of
their own the IceHawks scored a second goal of the
night to make it a one-goal game. Sylvain Cloutier
took a pass from Belanger in front of the net and beat
MacIntyre to make the score 3-2 at the end of two.

In the third, the IceHawks did not come out with the
intensity they had in the second period and the action
was end to end for the majority of the period, with
few scoring chances. There was just under two minutes
to play when the Generals extended their lead to two
goals. Brent Sullivan took a pass from Bobby Reynolds
and from point blank range shot it past Lance Leslie.
The final goal was an empty netter by Kevin Kerr his
second goal of the night.

The IceHawks are in action again Wednesday night at
Port Huron. Game time is set for 7:05 and all the
action can be heard on 98.5 WCKM. The IceHawks return
home Wednesday December 3rd to take on the Jackals. It
is a Will Win Wednesday, which means if the IceHawks
win every fan in attendance receives a complimentary
ticket to the next weekday home game. Also, ticket
stub will be redeemable for an item off the dollar
menu at any Team Reardon McDonalds. Tickets are on
sale now at the Glens Falls Civic Center or by calling
798-0202. Season seats, group tickets and Flexpacks
are still available for the 2003-04 season by calling
926-PUCK.

Ice Chips: With his goal tonight Littlejohn scored his
100th professional goal and moved into third alone on
the IceHawks all-time scoring list, passing Alex
Deev. With an assist tonight Belanger has 398 points
in an IceHawks uniform, which puts him two away from
400.

Beacons' bus problems cause hour delay

Adirondack IceHawks Press Release

Glens Falls, NY After the Beacons scored the first
goal, the IceHawks came back with five unanswered and
went on to win 5-1. The game started an hour late due
to bus problems the Beacons had, but it did not slow
down the IceHawks offense. Sylvain Cloutier had three
points including two goals, while Hugo Belanger and
James Desmarais each had two points apiece. The
IceHawks did most of their scoring in the second
period with two goals, and on the power play, with two
goals as well. The IceHawks are now 5-6-3 on the
season, while Port Huron is 6-6-1.

Port Huron opened up an early 1-0 lead when Ken Fels
got lose in front of the net and shot the puck past
IceHawks goalie Scott Dickie, the only blunder he had
all night. The IceHawks tied up the game later in the
period where on the power play Belanger took a slap
shot from the blue line. Beacons goalie Stu Dunn made
the initial saves, but the rebound came loose and
Cloutier knocked it home.

The IceHawks broke out for three goals in the second
period. It all started with Cloutiers second goal of
the night. He took a slap shot from the far side of
the ice and got it past Dunn. Frank Littlejohn had the
second goal of the period. Cloutier won a face off in
the Beacons end and left the puck for Littlejohn.
Frank skated in on Dunn and beat him to the near side
to give the IceHawks a 3-1 advantage. Jason Vermeulen
made the game 4-1 when he took a beautiful feed in
front of the net from Darren McLachlan. It was
Vermeulens second goal in two games.

In the third period the scoring settled down while the
fighting slightly increased. The lone goal was scored
on the power play, by Adirondacks Ladislav Kouba.
Instead two fights broke out between the IceHawks Jeff
Ewasko and Port Hurons Casey Harris and one between
IceHawks newcomer R.C Lyke and Beacons David Bell.
Two of the fights were only separated by one second.
The IceHawks are in action again tomorrow night at
home against the Flint Generals. Game time is set for
7:35. It is Carey Insurance and Molson Red Leaf night
and great seats are still available. Tomorrow is also
a post game skate, where after the game fans can skate
with the IceHawks and get autographs. Tickets are on
sale now at the Glens Falls Civic Center or by calling
798-0202. Season seats, group tickets and Flexpacks
are still available for the 2003-04 season by calling
