Beacons' bus problems cause hour delay
Adirondack IceHawks Press Release
Glens Falls, NY – After the Beacons scored the first
goal, the IceHawks came back with five unanswered and
went on to win 5-1. The game started an hour late due
to bus problems the Beacons had, but it did not slow
down the IceHawks offense. Sylvain Cloutier had three
points including two goals, while Hugo Belanger and
James Desmarais each had two points apiece. The
IceHawks did most of their scoring in the second
period with two goals, and on the power play, with two
goals as well. The IceHawks are now 5-6-3 on the
season, while Port Huron is 6-6-1.
Port Huron opened up an early 1-0 lead when Ken Fels
got lose in front of the net and shot the puck past
IceHawks goalie Scott Dickie, the only blunder he had
all night. The IceHawks tied up the game later in the
period where on the power play Belanger took a slap
shot from the blue line. Beacons’ goalie Stu Dunn made
the initial saves, but the rebound came loose and
Cloutier knocked it home.
The IceHawks broke out for three goals in the second
period. It all started with Cloutier’s second goal of
the night. He took a slap shot from the far side of
the ice and got it past Dunn. Frank Littlejohn had the
second goal of the period. Cloutier won a face off in
the Beacons end and left the puck for Littlejohn.
Frank skated in on Dunn and beat him to the near side
to give the IceHawks a 3-1 advantage. Jason Vermeulen
made the game 4-1 when he took a beautiful feed in
front of the net from Darren McLachlan. It was
Vermeulen’s second goal in two games.
In the third period the scoring settled down while the
fighting slightly increased. The lone goal was scored
on the power play, by Adirondack’s Ladislav Kouba.
Instead two fights broke out between the IceHawks Jeff
Ewasko and Port Huron’s Casey Harris and one between
IceHawks’ newcomer R.C Lyke and Beacons’ David Bell.
Two of the fights were only separated by one second.
The IceHawks are in action again tomorrow night at
home against the Flint Generals. Game time is set for
7:35. It is Carey Insurance and Molson Red Leaf night
and great seats are still available. Tomorrow is also
a post game skate, where after the game fans can skate
with the IceHawks and get autographs. Tickets are on
sale now at the Glens Falls Civic Center or by calling
798-0202. Season seats, group tickets and Flexpacks
are still available for the 2003-04 season by calling

Ice Chips: With his goal tonight Littlejohn moved into
a tied for third on the IceHawks all-time scoring list

Jackals fall behind early in loss
Adirondack grabs 4-0 lead, holds on.
November 1, 2003
By MICHAEL SHARP
Elmira Star-Gazette
Perhaps it's fitting that the enduring image from
Elmira's 5-2 loss to Adirondack on Friday night will
likely be two men head-butting each other during a
third-period fight.
If the Jackals hit their heads hard enough, maybe they
can forget that one completely.
"It's tough, this early in the year, to be playing
like we are," forward Eddy Lowe said. "Everyone says
on paper what a great team we've got, but we've yet to
prove that on the ice."
One night after being shut out 4-0 in Port Huron, the
Jackals spotted the IceHawks a 4-0 lead before
rallying with too little, too late in the third
period. Announced attendance at First Arena was 2,974.
"It's kind of tough to spot a team four goals before
you decide that you want to start playing," Lowe said.
"It's kind of been the trend to the season."
Lowe and Randy Murphy each had a goal for Elmira,
which is still struggling to finish its scoring
chances. Lowe's goal, with 43 seconds left in the
second period, made the score 4-1. The IceHawks then
put the game away 42 seconds into the third period,
when Hugo Belanger made it 5-1.
"We're struggling offensively, that's for sure,"
Jackals coach Todd Brost said. "We need to work for
some bounces and some breaks, and then the plays will
start to click. But right now, they're not going in
for us."
The power play continues to hurt the Jackals as well.
They went 1-for-7 with a man advantage Friday and are
now 1-for-22 on the power play this season.
They weren't much better in the defensive end, where
breakdowns helped force an early end to goalie Shane
Bendera's first start of the season. Bendera stopped
16 of 20 shots through two periods before Peter Aubry
came in to stop six of seven in the third.
"Defensive zone, we were really struggling," Brost
said of the decision to pull Bendera. "It was nothing
against the way he played. You sure can't fault him
for the goals. We just, we needed a change. We needed
something to kick-start us and get us going."
The game digressed into a parade of penalties in the
third period, with 10 penalties coming in the first
minute and 23 seconds. Jackals forward Neil Posillico
and IceHawks forward Trevor Senn each received game
misconducts for head-butting during their second fight
of the period.
The teams combined for 179 minutes of penalties, six
fights and four game misconducts. Nearly half of those
penalty minutes came in the third period.
"What do you expect?" defenseman Kris Mallette said.
"Guys are frustrated, everybody on the bench hates to
lose. ... This is our job, and people pay good money
to come watch us play. And right now, we're not
playing up to our ability, because we do have a
helluva hockey team in that room."

Muskegon Chronicle
FROM LOCAL REPORTS
Some late heroics by defenseman Trevor Johnson helped
keep the Muskegon Fury undefeated on Wednesday night
at Adirondack.
Johnson scored his first goal of the season with 2:08
remaining in the third period to tie the game and send
it into the shootout. In the shootout, Fury forwards
Brant Blackned and David Noel-Bernier scored goals and
goaltender Sylvain Daigle stopped all four IceHawk
shooters to give the Fury a 3-2 victory.
Muskegon, 3-0, moves on to play a pair of games this
weekend at Richmond on Friday and Saturday night.
Scott Hollis scored his third goal of the season in
the first period to tie the game at 1-all.
The hosts had taken a 1-0 lead thanks to a shorthanded
goal by former Fury forward David Burgess, who was
traded to the IceHawks for a first-round draft choice
in next spring's North American Amateur Draft.
The game remained tied until John Campbell scored with
4:14 remaining. Two minutes later, Johnson fired a
shot that beat IceHawk goaltender Lance Leslie.
Daigle, named the game's No. 1 star, finished the game
with 27 saves.
Red Wings alumni here Saturday
The Muskegon All-Stars will be looking to avenge last
year's 8-5 loss to the Detroit Red Wings Alumni
Association Saturday night at L.C. Walker Arena. The
game begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Muskegon All-Stars will consist of a collection of
players from throughout the 44 years of professional
hockey in Muskegon. The Red Wings Alumni Association
is the oldest such organization in the National Hockey
League, having been founded in 1959. Nearly all of its
proceeds are donated to charities in the U.S. and
Canada.
Tickets are priced at $5. In a package deal that costs
$10, spectators not only get a ticket to the alumni
game, but also to the Fury game on Nov. 9 against
Missouri.

The Jackals announced the signing of 6’2”, 195 pound
forward Greg Koehler.
Koehler split the 2002-2003 season between the
Milwaukee Admirals and the Manchester Monarchs, both
of the American Hockey League. The Scarborough, ONT
native particularly shined in New Hampshire, as he
tallied 14 points (1 G – 13 A) in 13 games for the
Monarchs; in 43 games for Milwaukee he had 16 goals,
10 assists and 56 PIM.
“Greg is a proven scorer, who has fantastic experience
playing in the AHL,” said Jackals Head Coach Todd
Brost. “His veteran status and leadership abilities
will be invaluable.”
The 28 year-old Koehler has been playing
professionally for 6 years, beginning in 1997-98 with
the New Haven Beast of the AHL. The right wing has
even made it up to the big dance, playing one game in
2000-01 with the National Hockey League’s Carolina
Hurricanes; failing to record a point. 2000-01 was
Koehler’s most productive season, not merely due to
his NHL debut, but his full season with Cincinnati of
the IHL, where he scored 35 goals, 36 assists, and
added 122 PIM in 80 games for the Cyclones. The
Jackals made room for Koehler on the Training Camp
roster by releasing forward T.J. Reid.

Nadeau Makes It Five Years With The Mallards
Popular center signs 2003-04 contract
Moline, IL – Center Patrick Nadeau will return for his
fifth season with the United Hockey League’s Quad City
Mallards after signing a 2003-2004 contract with the
defending Western Conference champions. Mallards
President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the
announcement today.
A Mallard since the 1999-2000 campaign, Nadeau scored
22 goals for Quad City last season, ranking fourth on
the team, despite being limited by injury to 54
regular season games. He added 19 assists for 41
points. His overtime goal in Game 6 of the Western
Conference Finals on April 19 sent the Mallards to the
Colonial Cup Championship Series for the sixth time in
the past seven years.
Nadeau (pronounced “nuh-DOH”), a 31-year-old native of
Vanier, Quebec, is fifth on the all-time Mallards goal
scoring list with 93, fifth in points with 220, and
third with a .193 shooting percentage. He ranks in the
franchise all-time top ten in games played, assists,
power play goals, game-winning goals, and shots on
goal.
Despite those impressive career numbers and 38 games
with the Birmingham Bulls of the ECHL in his rookie
season of 1998-99, Nadeau is not counted as a veteran
under UHL rules. Players with 280 or more regular
season pro games going into the season are classified
as veterans. Nadeau has 279 career games. The rule was
changed this year raising the limit from 250 to 280.
Teams are allowed to dress a maximum of six veterans.
Nadeau, who stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 180 pounds, led
the Mallards in 2001-02 with 45 assists. He was a
member of Quad City’s 2001 Colonial Cup Championship
team and played on the last three of the professional
hockey record six consecutive 50-win Mallards teams.
Today’s signings of Nadeau, Marty Goulet, and Sean
Starke bring the Mallards training camp roster to 22
players, including goaltenders Jeff Reynaert and
Masahito Haruna, defensemen Andy Fermoyle, Terry
Hollinger, Freddy Jobin, Adam Kragthorpe, Tom Menicci,
Dylan Mills, and Wade Winkler, and forwards Nadeau,
Jason Cannon, Bob Crummer, Jon Francisco, Lanny Gare,
Marty Goulet, Jason Goulet, Stefan Kostuch, Drew
Otten, Jason Sessa, Starke, Rob Voltera, and Jeff
Williams.

Chiller at Easton this afternoon. The Stars are 1-6-2
on the year, while the Ice Dogs are 2-7-2.
SUNDAY: Three Michigan first-period goals from Toby
Hafner, Dave Manzo and Dan Richardson put the visiting
Ice Dogs in the driver’s seat. The second period was
more of the same but fine goaltending from Dru
DeLaForet (21 saves after the first period) and a
power-play goal from Paul Freeman at 16:19 kept the
Stars in the game. Columbus got within one score when
Bobby Shepherd redirected a Kevin Dodd blast passed
Michigan goalie Erik Schardt at 2:24 of the third.
Schardt made 29 saves in earning his second straight
tie. Luke DeLorenzo, who assisted on Freeman’s second
period tally, scored
the game’s final goal at 16:36 on assists from Freeman
and Ryan Markell.
SATURDAY: Two goals by Stars forward Brandon Rubeo
were matched by the IceDogs’ Drew Hafner as the teams
skated to a 4-4 tie Saturday night. After power play
goals from Columbus’ Luke DeLorenzo and Eric Tallent
put the home team up 2-0, Michigan scored three
unanswered with Hafner’s goals bracketing
one from Ryan Wischmeyer. Rubeo’s first tied the game
at three after two periods, and his second put the
home team ahead 24 seconds into the third period. Ryan
Panicara took assists from Hafner and Matt Chromy on
the games final goal at 9:55 of the third. Erik
Schardt stopped 27 shots for Michigan and Jonathan

(Today's useless hockey story: Nathan Grobins was
playing in ECHL Tallahassee, Florida's capital city,
right around the time of the presidential recount
vote. Grobins was constantly complaining that he
wasn't getting credited for all the shots on goals he
was facing. Maybe it was all those hanging pucks,
but...I guess he wanted a recount!)

The Jackals announced today the signing of 5’10, 190
pound winger Nathan Gillies.
Gillies recently graduated from Union College of the
East Coast Athletic Conference. In his 4 years at the
Achilles Arena, Gillies’ resume boasts significant
improvement each and every season. In his freshman
season, the Milton, Ontario native had just seven
points (1 goal & 6 assists) in 27 games. With his
point totals increasing dramatically each season,
Gillies was named team captain as a senior, playing 34
games, scoring 17 goals and 19 assists for the
Dutchmen. Gillies’ four shorthanded goals led the
nation in the 2002-03 NCAA season.
“Nathan assets include speed, tenacity and drive,”
said Jackals Head Coach Todd Brost. “He is an
extremely hard worker with great leadership abilities,
who should add more depth in scoring, team character
and grit.”
The 22 year-old Gillies, who will begin his
professional career with the Jackals, gets his
Spartan-like determination from the family gene pool;
his brother Trevor is a very gritty defenseman in the
AHL, the defenseman led the Lowell Lock Monsters with

Veteran Tom Nemeth to anchor blueline for the Stars
October 8, 2003 - COLUMBUS, OH – The Stars are less
than a week away from opening the team’s inaugural
training camp and the outlook for the on-ice product
just keeps getting brighter. Stars’ General Manager
Robb W. King and UHL Head Coach and Director of Hockey
Operations Malcolm Cameron announced the signing of
veteran defenseman Tom Nemeth for the 2003-2004 season
today.
The six-foot two-inch St. Catharines, ON native is
entering his 12th season of professional hockey, with
at least a portion of nine of those played with the
Dayton Bombers in the ECHL. Nemeth has played with
Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne and Cincinnati in the
International Hockey League as well as two stints with
Rochester of the American Hockey League.
Nemeth earned “Defenseman of the Year” honors in the
ECHL on three occasions (1994, 2000 & 2001) and posted
82 assists in 66 regular season games in 1993-94. Over
his 445-game career in the ECHL, the defenseman has
tallied 383 points while consistently ranking among
the top defensive stoppers in the league.
The blueliner is no stranger to playoff production. In
the 2002 Kelly Cup playoffs, Nemeth recorded nine
helpers and four goals while leading his team to the
Northern Conference title. Nemeth had two 20-goal-plus
years in 1999-2000 and 2000-01 and has participated in
three Turner Cup playoff campaigns.
“Tom Nemeth has been a premier defenseman at our level
of hockey for a long time,” said Cameron. “Having
played and coached against Tom I know what he brings
to the table. I am extremely excited to have the
opportunity to coach him this year.”
Playing in the ECHL during the 90s Nemeth has vivid
memories of Columbus hockey crowds and the Fairgrounds
Coliseum.
“I know the fans are great there,” Nemeth said. “Every
time I came in with Dayton the place was packed and
loud.”
Last season Nemeth posted nine goals and 30 assists in
65 games for a Bombers’ team that did not advance to
the postseason.
Nemeth was a 1991 10th-round selection of the
Minnesota North Stars (206th overall) and played four
years for the Cornwall Colts of the Ontario Hockey
League.

Stars sign defenseman from Syracuse camp
October 6, 2003 - COLUMBUS, OH – Sometimes situations
just fall into place. Gary Zinck and the Columbus
Stars are that kind of perfect fit.
Zinck signed to play for the first-year United Hockey
League team for the 2003-2004 season, announced UHL
Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm
Cameron and General Manager Robb W. King today.
The 6-3 defenseman is a native of Cole Harbor, Nova
Scotia where he played youth hockey on the same teams
as Stars forward Evan Cheverie. Also hailing from the
Halifax suburb is Coach Cameron and camp invitee Craig
Hillier. The hard-nosed blueliner has spent the last
two seasons with the Tigers of Dalhousie University in
Halifax, Nova Scotia. His defensive tenacity and
toughness in front of the net has earned him 170
penalty minutes in 47 games over those two years.
The 210-pounder attended the American Hockey League
camp of the Syracuse Crunch, the top affiliate for the
Columbus Blue Jackets. The Stars location in Ohio’s
Capital city, will help keep Zinck on that
organization’s radar screen.
Zinck played for his local Halifax club in the Quebec
Major Junior Hockey League for two seasons before
joining the Long Beach Ice Dogs for the 2001 West
Coast Hockey League playoffs. Zinck has never played a
season for Cameron, but the Stars’ coach has helped
Zinck develop in summer hockey schools and being
around the Halifax area hockey scene.
“I know coach as a person and as a coach and he has
always been good to me,” Zinck said. “Hopefully he can
help me get to the next level and I can help the team
reach its goals.”
“Zinck is a big, tough, rugged defenseman who takes
very good care of his own end,” Cameron said. “It also
helps that he is not afraid to mix it up a little
bit.”
LEE JELENIC RETIRES – Left Wing Lee Jelenic will not
be joining the Stars in camp after a previous injury
did not respond to treatments as hoped. The 6-2
Toronto, ON native played most of his two professional
seasons with the UHL’s Flint Generals but finished the
2002-03 season with the Rochester Americans of the
AHL, appearing in 17 games.
Jelenic played four years of college hockey at Yale
University and received the Thomas W. Ford ’42
Community Outreach Award and his BA in Political
Science in 2001. The Stars acquired the rights to
Jelenic in the four-player deal that sent Kevin Kerr
to the Generals.

THE FURY 2003-04 UHL TRAINING CAMP ROSTER CONTINUES TO
GROW WITH 4-MORE ADDED
MUSKEGON ROSTER REACHES 30 WITH FOUR MORE CANDIDATES
INKED TO UHL TRYOUTS
FOUR FORWARDS; TWO CENTERS AND TWO LEFT WINGS SET TO
REPORT TO CAMP OCT. 12
MUSKEGON, MI.--- As training camp to inaugurate their
12th United Hockey League season begins to approach,
the Muskegon Fury are continuing the ongoing process
of completing the franchise training camp roster for
the inception of the 2003-04 UHL campaign.
Having previously executed the signings of some
20-players to league contracts, followed by the
earlier announcement of five players added through
official UHL Standard Training Camp Tryout Agreements,
the Fury organization, on this date, has announced
that four more lineup hopefuls have agreed to terms on
tryout agreements and will report to camp on October
12th at the Fury home of Walker Arena.
The Fury Club Owner and Team President Tony Lisman, in
collaboration with Director of Hockey Operations /
Head Coach Todd Nelson, have announced that centers
MARTY ANTONELLI and THOMAS PLAUGHER along with left
wings ROCKY FLORIO and ERROL MCDONALD will be joining
the Fury as roster candidates for the 2003-04 UHL
season.
ANTONELLI, 23, is an American-bred, hailing from the
Detroit suburb of Roseville. He will be coming to
Muskegon after performing in brief stints in the
2002-03 season in the WCHL with the Long Beach Ice
Dogs and in the UHL with the Missouri River Otters.
The 5-11, 205lb left-hand shooting centerman
registered 1-goal, 1-assist, 2-points in 16-games in
Long Beach while collecting 2-assists in 2-starts with
the Missoureans. A product of the junior 'A' circuit
the NAHL (North American Hockey League), Antonelli's
best campaign came in 2000-01 when he recorded
57-points in 51-games for the Capital Centre Pride in
Lansing, MI. His composite read 23-goals, 34-assists
to capture the club's scoring crown and earn a coveted
berth on the NAHL All-Star Team.
PLAUGHER, 22, looks to make his pro debut when
attending the Muskegon training camp sessions. The
6-0, 200lb right-hand shooting center comes armed with
some rather extraordinary scoring credentials produced
from nearby local hamlets where he resides. Also an
American-bred, hailing from Upland, PA, Plaugher
fashioned 32(111-67-178) as a member of the
Philadelphia Sting in 2002-03, accruing 32-PIM as
well. In the previous season of 2001-02, playing for
the New Jersey Riot, he essayed 38(73-64-137) with
43-PIM. In the 2000-01 season with the Allentown
Spartans he was 37(64-78-142) with 56-PIM.
FLORIO, 26, has been invited to the Fury training
quarters with a pro playing resume that includes some
various stints and stops in the WPHL in 1998-99 with
the since extinct Monroe Moccasins, the CHL in 1999-00
with the Wichita Thunder, 31(6-7-13) 91-PIM as well as
with the Mohawk Valley Prowlers of the UHL, and, most
recently, the Laval Chiefs of the QSPHL in the 2001-02
season. The 6-2, 215lb left wing is a native of
Burlington, Ontario.
MCDONALD, 25, is a first-year pro who will embark on
his professional pursuits after a sound and solid
career at perennial ECAC Division III national
powerhouse Rochester Tech (RIT). A four year standout
for the Tigers, the 6-0, 182lb left wing completed his
senior season last year with 3-goals, 5-assists,
8-points in 16-games, recording 6-PIM. The 2000-01
campaign was his finest for RIT as he engineered
27-points in 29-games through 8-goals, 19-assists,
contributing 1-PPG and 2-SHG. The Toronto, Ontario
native's career totals at RIT read 92-games; 19-goals,
38-assists, 57-points with 2-PPG and 3-SHG.
These latest Fury roster signees increase the training
camp roster to 30 with more additions anticipated.
Thus far, the 30-man roster is comprised of
4-goaltenders, 9-defensemen and 17-forwards.
The current Fury roster for training camp: goaltenders
KALEB CHRISTENSON; SYLVAIN DAIGLE; GLENN RIDLER; BLAKE
WARD; defensemen JUSTIN BERRY; ANTHONY CACCIATORE;

Bruins assign winger to IceHogs
Another dose of Paradise in Rockford
Rockford, Ill.-Winger Chris Paradise was assigned to
the Rockford IceHogs of the United Hockey League on
Tuesday from the Boston Bruins (NHL) developmental
system. Chris, the younger brother of IceHogs center
Dave Paradise, was sent to Rockford from the
Providence Bruins (AHL) and will be in IceHogs camp
when the club begins practice on Sunday, October 12th.
Paradise was in camp with Providence prior to coming
to Rockford.
Last season, the younger Paradise appeared in 46 games
with Providence and suited up for 14 contests with the
Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (ECHL). During his
stay in Providence, Paradise had 4g-7a-11pts and
accumulated 53 penalty minutes. While with Atlantic
City, the winger had 5g-2a-7pts during his rookie
season.
"This is a great addition for the IceHogs," said
Bernard. "Any time you can get a player that spent the
previous season at a higher level is a plus. It's an
added bonus that we are able to unite the Paradise
brothers for the first time in their careers at any
level.
"I also think that this is great for the IceHogs
organization to have an opportunity to help develop a
player with the Boston Bruins organization."
Paradise played collegiately at the University of
Denver before turning pro last season. The St. Paul,
Minnesota native led the Pioneers in scoring during
his junior (00-01) and senior (01-02) seasons. During
Paradise's final year in Denver, he also led the squad
in goals (22) and game-winning goals (5) while helping
the Pioneers advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The IceHogs open training camp on Sunday, October 12th
and plan to have 31 players participate in the camp.
Rockford will play two exhibition games against the
Quad City Mallards plus an inter squad game during the
first week of camp next week.
In other IceHogs news, due to an injury, winger Brad
Olsen has been placed on indefinite team suspension
for the upcoming season. Olsen, a rookie last season,
established himself as a gritty forward during his
first professional campaign. Olsen could rejoin the
IceHogs during the season.

senior season at University of New Hampshire, where he
helped lead the Wildcats to a second straight
appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four. He was named to
the All-New England team and received first team
All-Conference honors in Hockey East. Gare led the
conference with a +24 plus/minus rating, led his team
with 51 points, and tied for the team lead with 22
goals. He was named as the Wildcats’ top offensive
player, as well as being selected the top defensive
forward for the second straight year.
A high point of Gare’s magical senior season was his
four-goal game in an 8-3 win over Merrimack on Jan. 4.
He became the first New Hampshire player to score four
times in one game since current Mighty Ducks of
Anaheim center Jason Krog accomplished the feat in
1999. A low point for the year was Gare’s injury in
the national quarterfinals, which forced him to sit
out the Wildcats’ semifinal victory and championship
game 5-1 loss to Minnesota.
Gare, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound, 25-year-old native of
Vernon, British Columbia, is a nephew of former NHL
star Danny Gare. Danny played 13 seasons with Buffalo,
Detroit, and Edmonton. He scored 50 goals for the
Sabres in 1975-76 and 56 goals for Buffalo in 1979-80.
Danny Gare finished his NHL career with 354 goals.
Lanny Gare’s productivity at New Hampshire was similar
to that of Mallards all-time leading goal scorer Glenn
Stewart, who played for the Wildcats from 1990-91 to
1993-94. Gare played 151 games, compared to 144 for
Stewart. Gare scored 48 goals to Stewart’s 51. Gare
had 94 assists and 142 points, besting Stewart’s 51
assists and 102 points.
The addition of Lanny Gare brings the Mallards
training camp roster to 18 players, including
goaltenders Jeff Reynaert and Masahito Haruna,
defensemen Andy Fermoyle, Terry Hollinger, Freddy
Jobin, Adam Kragthorpe, Tom Menicci, Dylan Mills, and
Wade Winkler, and forwards Gare, Jason Cannon, Bob
Crummer, Jon Francisco, Stefan Kostuch, Drew Otten,
Jason Sessa, and Jeff Williams.

Adding to the Roster
K-Wings Sign More Three Players and Invite Four Others
to Training Camp
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings of the United
Hockey League announce the signings of forwards David
Hukalo, Robert (B.J.) Gaustad, and defenseman Josh
Akright for the 2003-04 season; per team policy, the
terms of the contracts will be undisclosed.
Hukalo is a 5 foot 10, 190-pound forward from
Edmonton, Alberta. This season will be Hukalo’s first
as a professional. Before turning pro, Hukalo spent
four years at the University of Wisconsin. Hukalo
scored 30 goals and added 54 assists in 143 career
games as a Badger.
“Players that play at high Division I institutions
usually find the transition from college to pro an
easy one,” said Director of Hockey Operations and Head
Coach Mark Reeds. “David was a very productive college
player that has the ability to be a good professional
player.”
Gaustad comes to Kalamazoo after playing two years for
St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota. Prior to
his stay at SMU, the native of Portland, Oregon,
played two seasons with the Vernon Vipers of the
British Columbia Hockey League. In 1999-2000, Gaustad
posted his best season in Vernon, as the forward
registered 16 goals and 27 assists in 42 games. He is
also the brother of Paul Gaustad, a seventh-round pick
in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, who
saw his first NHL action last year.
“In juniors and in college Robert has been able to
contribute with productive numbers,” said Reeds. “He
(Gaustad) has great potential and we hope he can
develop it here in Kalamazoo.”
In addition to Hukalo and Gaustad, the K-Wings also
signed a familiar face with the addition of Josh
Akright. Josh played six games for Kalamazoo last year
and recorded his first professional assist. Before
joining the K-Wings, Akright played four years for
Western Michigan University. Akright had four assists
and 128 penalty minutes over a 69-game college career
as a Bronco.
“Akright is a young, physical defenseman that will add
size and strength to our blue line,” said Reeds. “In
just six games with us last season, Josh started to
mature as a player, and by having experienced
defensemen around him this year he will be able to
continue to develop.”
In addition to the recent signings, the K-Wings have
invited four international players to take part in
their training camp, which begins on Sunday, October
12th. Vladimir Chervov, Andras Sajevics, Petr
Formanek, and Ondrej Skalos have all agreed to take
part in the K-Wings training camp.
With these recent signings, the K-Wings roster has
grown to fifteen players signed thus far for the
K-Wings’ 30th Anniversary season. Season tickets for
the 2003-2004 season are currently on sale by calling
the Wings Stadium Box Office at (269) 345-5101. Fans
can still save 15% on their season tickets by
reserving their seats for this historic year.
For more information about the signings of David
Hukalo, Robert (B.J.) Gaustad, and Josh Akright,
please contact Mike Modugno, Director of Public
Relations and Broadcaster at (269) 349-9772, extension

high 32 points (6 goals and 26 assists).

The 30 year-old Sheehan began his professional career
in 1999-00 with the El Paso Buzzards of the WPHL,

“J.F. is an incredible goal-scoring talent, and is a

Brost. “He is a pure scorer, who should fill an
offensive void that the club was missing last season.”
Boutin was amongst the scoring leaders of this year’s

penalty minutes. One of his goals was on the power
