My friend and former ECHL, UHL, and WPHL netminder Rob
Laurie is in negotiations with the CHL Fort Worth
Brahmas on the renewal of his contract. The team had
made him an offer, but it was not much more than a
rookie would make.
Rob's a great guy and because he's really easy going,
tends to get taken advantage of in his jobs. He's
still owed money by Anaheim, and this last summer he
played roller hockey for team USA on the promise of
new equipment. He got a pair of new gloves out of the
deal. They never even ordered new goalie sticks for
him!
Rob's not asking for a lot of money, just a fair
contract.
The Brahma fans have put together a petition to Todd
Lalonde and the Brahmas front office to get Rob the
attention he need's to get him a decent offer on his
contract for this year. As far as the petition goes,
the total number of signatures - not whether you're a
Brahma fan - is the important thing. We have 84 right
now. We'd like to break the 100 mark!
Please help out, even if you don't know him, by
signing the petition at

There's also a banner available you can display on
your site if you wish to help out even more, the

I've heard the same information, I believe from the same source. However,
I remain in a "I'll enjoy it if it happens, but I'm not counting on all the
things coming together" mode. The person who's driving the Sacto effort is
devoted and I admire his persistence and will, but I haven't heard anything
from any other sources to confirm these efforts.
>* Stockton (will come in when new downtown arena is built)
If Stockton is building a downtown arena, it's a possibility, but I think
Stockton and Sacto are too close to support two teams -- too little
population between the two to make it work. If it's true, I think it's a
bad idea -- it should be one or the other, not both.
>* Vancouver, WA (2003-2004)
This is true -- assuming that the owners can sell the naming rights to the
building by October. If not, the whole project might go up in smoke --
plus, the local residents are going to court to force an election on
whether or not to build this events center. This team will be owned by the
owner of the dormant Phoenix Mustangs -- and might even _be_ the Mustangs.
>* Las Vegas (when downtown arena is built)
There's people behind this effort, but until ground is broken and the plans
are approved by the city, anything can and quite likely will go wrong.
>* Ontario (2-3 years, owned by Long Beach owner)
They've had to redo the plans and designs, scaling down from a 10,000 seat
arena to a 6,000 seat "events center", and the financing still isn't in
place. However, yes, the Long Beach owner is behind the push for this
arena, and owns the dormant Tucson WCHL franchise to place there when/if it
comes to fruition. This is Ontario, CA -- inland from Los Angeles, near
San Bernardino.
>* Everett, WA (owned by Long Beach owner)
Yes, the LB owner has the WCHL rights to an Everett franchise, but the city
still hasn't decided between the WCHL and the Canadian Major Junior
WHL. My personal money is on the WHL, as they would be a travel partner
for the Seattle Thunderbirds -- or a place for the Thunderbirds to move to.
>Phoenix franchise will move to Chandler, AZ based on new arena.
Possible -- but I've heard no word from the area that Chandler is going to
go with the arena -- again, color me skeptical until there's more firm
confirmation.
>* San Francisco was talked about in recent meeting, based on getting new
>arena built."
If true, this is a stupid, stupid, stupid move, IMO -- San Francisco and
Oakland have been the death of many a pro hockey franchise, from the old
pro WHL to the NHL to the IHL and so on -- it just doesn't work, minor
league or major league, and even if it's a 6,000 seat mid-town arena, I'm
very skeptical that WCHL hockey would have a wing and a prayer there --
just take a look at the IHL Los Angeles Ice Dogs their one year in the LA
Sports Arena.

I only have second-hand reports that THN and the New Haven register
reported that Roy Boe purchased the Bridgeport franchise from the Carolina
Hurricanes, making it the old Monarchs/Beast franchise -- I don't have the
original sources, I'm afraid...

"Well, you can buy your friends, but I'll hate you for free."
Okay, on one I'll give you credit for being right:
"AHL adds Manchester, N.H.
SPRINGFIELD, MA . . . American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced this afternoon that the League's Board of Governors has unanimously approved a conditional transfer of the location of the AHL franchise owned by Howard Baldwin to Manchester, NH. Mr. Baldwin is a former member of the NHL Board of Governors representing the Pittsburgh Penguins and previously the Hartford Whalers.
The Manchester AHL team is scheduled to operate in a major new arena project to be constructed in time for the 2001-2002 AHL season.
"We are thrilled to add Manchester, NH to the American Hockey League family and we are confident that Mr. Baldwin's experience in professional hockey will contribute to a successful franchise which all of New Hampshire can be proud of," said Mr. Andrews.
"My goal is to give this area a highly-competitive hockey team that will contend for the AHL championship each year," said Mr. Baldwin. "We want h!
ockey nights in Manchester to be fun for everyone, especially families. The natural rivalries we will have with the other AHL teams in New England will make the competition even more enjoyable."
The American Hockey League enters its 64th season in 1999-2000 with 19 teams in the League and 21 primary NHL affiliations. The League will continue to expand in 2000-2001 with the addition of Hampton Roads, VA and Rossford, OH. The AHL is the top developmental League for the National Hockey League with over 250 players competing in both the AHL and NHL last season."
So, from this previous press release, it appears that one of the "dormant" franchises was purchased and moved to Manchester. However, lets take a look at the Bridgeport press release:
"AHL expands to Bridgeport, CT
SPRINGFIELD, MA . . . The American Hockey League announced today that it will place a franchise in Bridgeport CT. The franchise has been awarded to former New York Islanders owner Roy Boe, a partner in Bridgeport Pro Hockey LLC. Boe currently owns the Worcester IceCats, the AHL primary affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, and as per League By-Laws he will divest himself of his interest in Worcester prior to activating the new franchise in Bridgeport.
The grant of the Bridgeport franchise is conditioned upon the completion of a planned new 10,000-seat facility and the formalizing of agreements with the building operator and the city. It is anticipated that the Bridgeport franchise will begin play in the 2001-2002 season, which will be the 66th season of American Hockey League operation.
The Bridgeport AHL franchise will be the primary affiliate of an NHL club which will be announced at a later date.
The addition of Bridgeport will bring the AHL to twenty-two teams for the 2001-2002 season, with twenty-three of thirty NHL clubs developing their top professional players in this historic and highly competitive League.
The AHL is the top developmental League for the National Hockey League with over 200 players having competed in both the AHL and NHL already this season. Two out of three NHL players have apprenticed in the AHL, a League whose history includes 107 graduates who are members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. This year the AHL will set its eighth consecutive regular season attendance record with over 4.25 million fans attending AHL games. "
Nothing about purchasing of a dormant franchise or anything like that - expansion - they created a new team - they didn't take a "dormant" team and move it to Bridgeport. I believe that the Manchester franchise is the former Corwall Aces - but I could be wrong about that one. What are your sources Hans? Do you have any press releases or documentation that I may have overlooked that shows that Bridgeport was purchased from elsewhere and moved there?
At 01:44 PM 8/23/01 -0400, you wrote:
>I thought that Manchester and Bridgeport of the AHL were pure expansion
>teams, not "re-births" of past teams.
Not from what I've been able to ferret out -- these were rights to teams
that were dormant and sold, from everything I've learned.

Understood, that's why I refer to the hockey history mailing list, there are people from thunder bay on that list that may be able to help you. Then again, the league wasn't terribly organized the first year.
The Falcons did not have a magnet schedule in 95-96.

I think it's more a case of liking Idaho's coach. Allison won the Taylor
Cup with Tacoma in the WCHL in 1999, and I believe got WCHL MVP. John
Olver, the coach of Tacoma that year, is now coaching the Idaho Steelheads,
and coaches a highly developed trap that allows Allison to see _very_
little rubber. Given that Olver's performance in Idaho has been very
similar to his style in Tacoma (and earlier Fresno), Allison probably knows
what style of play he'll have in front of him, and figures that he would
like to see that little rubber :)

Subject: [uhl_list] Indianapolis Ice Sue to Join UHL
I never really understood why they didn't just join the UHL in the first
place.
JUNE 29, 18:47 EST
Indianapolis Ice Sue to Join UHL
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Ice filed a lawsuit to end a working
agreement with the Central Hockey League in an effort to join the United
Hockey League.
``We've asked to be relieved of the (remaining) three years and terminate
the
agreement,'' Ice general manager Rod Davidson said.
The suit, filed in Marion Superior Court on Wednesday, alleges the CHL
violated its sanctioning agreement with the Ice by merging with the Western
Professional Hockey League.
The Ice has three years remaining in their agreement with the CHL and the
Indianapolis ownership is not permitted to field a team in another league
until 2009, CHL commissioner Tom Berry said.
``They have that and we anticipate and expect that (the Ice) will continue
to
play in this league,'' Berry said. ``That's why it was a bit of a shock that
they wanted to make some changes.''
The CHL's merger with the WPHL, and the restructuring of the CHL has left
Indianapolis with one close geographic rival — the Memphis RiverKings.
``The merge did not offend us or anything,'' Davidson said, ``but it's
making
it costly for travel.''
Berry said the CHL's new divisional alignment will make the Ice's travel
costs the same as in 1999-2000, when Indianapolis won the league title.
Davidson couldn't estimate when the suit against the CHL will be resolved,
but he is working under the assumption that the Ice will be in another
league
this season.
``I think we have to assume that we will get out of the (CHL) and try to
move
on,'' Davidson said. ``This pre-emptive action that was filed should cause
things to move along.''

Indianapolis Ice Sue to Join UHL
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Ice filed a lawsuit to end a working
agreement with the Central Hockey League in an effort to join the United
Hockey League.
``We've asked to be relieved of the (remaining) three years and terminate the
agreement,'' Ice general manager Rod Davidson said.
``They have that and we anticipate and expect that (the Ice) will continue to
play in this league,'' Berry said. ``That's why it was a bit of a shock that
they wanted to make some changes.''
The CHL's merger with the WPHL, and the restructuring of the CHL has left
Indianapolis with one close geographic rival — the Memphis RiverKings.
``The merge did not offend us or anything,'' Davidson said, ``but it's making
it costly for travel.''
Berry said the CHL's new divisional alignment will make the Ice's travel
costs the same as in 1999-2000, when Indianapolis won the league title.
Davidson couldn't estimate when the suit against the CHL will be resolved,
but he is working under the assumption that the Ice will be in another league
this season.
``I think we have to assume that we will get out of the (CHL) and try to move
on,'' Davidson said. ``This pre-emptive action that was filed should cause
things to move along.''
