Cincinnati Cyclones' 2003 Rookie of the Year to Reunite with
Coach,Linemate in Columbus
Evan Cheverie has signed with the Columbus Stars to play for its
inaugural season, General Manager Robb W. King and UHL Head Coach and
Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron announced today.
The six-foot, one-inch forward attended the prospects camp of the
Columbus Blue Jackets at the CoreComm Ice House last fall before
joining the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League.
Cheverie earned team rookie of the year honors posting 49 points (18
g- 31 a) in 56 games, before having his year cut short by a hip
injury.
"Evan is a very gifted hockey player who has yet to fully tap his
potential," said Cameron. "He is a very fast skater with a good shot
and he is big and strong. We look forward to having him in a Stars'
jersey this season."
Cheverie's skills allow him to play either center or right wing and
he will be reunited with linemate Matt Noga from 2003 Cyclones.
Cheverie shares more history than just last year with the Stars' head
man Cameron. The two share a hometown (Cole Harbor, NS) and Cameron
has instructed Cheverie in camps during his development.
"I had a great experience playing for Coach Cameron," Cheverie
said. "Coach works very hard for his players and they work very hard
for him."
The 23-year old Cheverie's career keeps bringing him back to
Columbus. As a Miami RedHawk, he experienced both the intimate
setting of the "War Memorial" OSU Ice Rink and the splendor of the
Schottenstein Center. His time with the Blue Jacket's organizational
rookie camp at the Nationwide Arena showed him that Columbus is a
hockey town.
Cheverie will be attending camp with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of
the American Hockey League in late September.
