Richmond, VA – The Richmond RiverDogs of the United Hockey League
have signed veteran right wing Jay Murphy to a contract for the 2003-
'04 season. Murphy returns to the city in which he started his pro
career after spending last season with the Greensboro Generals.
Murphy captained the Generals last season. He led Greensboro to
franchise records in nearly every category last season. Murphy racked
up 47 points and 107 PIM in 43 regular season games in 2002-`03. He
led the Generals in goals (five) and points (12) in the playoffs last
year.
Murphy began his pro career in Richmond. He was a member of
Richmond's 1995 Riley Cup champions. He also led the '95-'96 Richmond
team to the best regular season record in the league. The Rochester
Institute of Technology product spent most of his pro career with the
Louisiana Ice Gators. He was a post-season All Star in 2000.
"In my opinion, Murph is one of the top five players at this level,"
said Richmond General Manager Jeff Croop. "He never takes a night off
and his team never misses the playoffs. We've been building our team
around him," Croop added.
"I am very excited to return to a great hockey town where I started
my career, said Murphy. "I'll be reuniting with two of the best
defensemen I've ever played with (Darren Wetherill and Brian
Goudie)," Murphy added.
The RiverDogs now have 15 players under contract for the upcoming
season. Murphy joins Kevin Carr, David Bagley, Paul Johnson, Brad
Both, Michal Lanicek, Brad Cook, Derek Schutz, Darren Wetherill,
Richard Pitirri, Maxime Gingras, Kevin St. Jacques, Brian Goudie,
Dave Shields, and Jeremy Wray. Richmond has signed eight forwards,
five defensemen, and two goalies. Richmond now has five veterans and
three rookies under contract. Four players are former NHL draft
picks. The `Dogs have also signed F/D Donald Seremak to a tryout
agreement.
· The `Dogs have made a change to the home schedule. The game
originally slated for Sunday, November 23 vs. Ft. Wayne has been
moved to Tuesday, February 3 at 7:05. The RiverDogs and the league
agreed to the change to help the Richmond Coliseum land a major
concert.
