GLENS FALLS -- The IceHawks showed another side Friday
night at the Civic Center.

They played defense and goalie Ryan Person allowed
only one goal as the IceHawks won their third straight
at the Civic Center, a 4-1 decision over the BC
Icemen.

In a quick-paced UHL match, the Hawks (13-16-5)
improved to 3-0-0 on their current five-game
homestand.

``We played smart defensively and made some good
choices with the puck,'' coach Gates Orlando said.
``We had some breakdowns and when we did have them,
Ryan made the saves.''

That was a big difference Friday.

In their three previous games, the IceHawks
surrendered 18 goals.

Perhaps Person's biggest save came in the first
period, with BC trailing 2-1. It came moments after
BC's Marc Lauzon deflected in a shot from the point by
defenseman Trevor Shoaf. On the Icemen's next rush,
BC's R.J. Gates one-timed a pass at what appeared to
be an open net.

Person quickly closed the gap.

``That was the turning point,'' said center Kevin St.
Jacques, who had two goals and an assist.

``I have to thank the trainer for not sharpening my
skates too much because it went right off the top of
the blade,'' said Person, who was forced to make just
16 saves. ``That was one of the best team defensive
efforts this season.

"The three games before were shaky for both goalies.
The last two games I couldn't get it going. For teams
that are below .500, goalies have step up and do our
job and get the team back in the playoff hunt.''

The Hawks may have been on top of their defensive
game, but they still generated offense, out shooting
the Icemen, 35-17.

``We only scored four, but we could have had nine,''
Orlando said, alluding to at least three breakaways
missed by Hugo Belanger, the league's leading scorer.

Belanger did connect on a empty-net goal and added two
assists.

Defenseman Trent Schachle also had two assists.

Instead of starting goalie Bryan Schoen, who made 34
saves in the Icemen's 4-3 win over the Hawks on Dec.
26, coach Brad Jones went with Eric Heffler, the UHL's
goalie of the week.

Heffler, who was 3-1-1 with a 2.80 goals-against
average since being acquired from New Haven Dec. 20,
yielded three first-period goals, one to Dominic
Chiasson and two to St. Jacques.

The Hawks never trailed.

``They played very well defensively and our inability
to generate quality opportunities certainly added to
that fact,'' Jones said. ``They played well away from
the puck. The chances we did get, Person made the
stops he was supposed to make."

The Icemen (15-16-3) welcomed back Dave Jesiolowski
and Eric Andersen, who had been sidelined with
injuries, but were still without four of their top six
scorers, including Glendon Cominetti, Rob Voltera and
Chris Grenville.

Ice chips: Rookie Jason Bone on Friday was suspended
two games by UHL officials for leaving the bench
during a fight last Monday. New Haven's Alexei
Lazarenko, who ignited the altercation, received three
games...

The IceHawks also won three straight two other times
this season (Oct. 13-29 and Nov. 23-29)...

The Icemen did not have a power play; the Hawks went
0-for-4...

BC has yet to score a short-handed goal. It has
surrendered nine...

The Icemen, who are 6-2-2 versus the IceHawks this
season, are 3-3-0 during their eight-game road trip...

The IceHawks host the New Haven Knights tonight and
Sunday.
