Prob because they thought the CHL would expand their way rather than going
with a merger and expanding in the opposite direction.

Subject: [uhl_list] Indianapolis Ice Sue to Join UHL
I never really understood why they didn't just join the UHL in the first
place.

Indianapolis Ice Sue to Join UHL
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Ice filed a lawsuit to end a working
agreement with the Central Hockey League in an effort to join the United
Hockey League.
``We've asked to be relieved of the (remaining) three years and terminate
the
agreement,'' Ice general manager Rod Davidson said.
The suit, filed in Marion Superior Court on Wednesday, alleges the CHL
violated its sanctioning agreement with the Ice by merging with the Western
Professional Hockey League.
The Ice has three years remaining in their agreement with the CHL and the
Indianapolis ownership is not permitted to field a team in another league
until 2009, CHL commissioner Tom Berry said.
``They have that and we anticipate and expect that (the Ice) will continue
to
play in this league,'' Berry said. ``That's why it was a bit of a shock that
they wanted to make some changes.''
The CHL's merger with the WPHL, and the restructuring of the CHL has left
Indianapolis with one close geographic rival — the Memphis RiverKings.
``The merge did not offend us or anything,'' Davidson said, ``but it's
making
it costly for travel.''
Berry said the CHL's new divisional alignment will make the Ice's travel
costs the same as in 1999-2000, when Indianapolis won the league title.
Davidson couldn't estimate when the suit against the CHL will be resolved,
but he is working under the assumption that the Ice will be in another
league
this season.
``I think we have to assume that we will get out of the (CHL) and try to
move
on,'' Davidson said. ``This pre-emptive action that was filed should cause
things to move along.''
