About the kicking rule,
This is what I was taught when I was in high school:
When your feet are moving, nobody can tell it is intentional or not. So the emprirical rule is: as long as your feet are moving and kicked the ball, then it is called "kicking"
If you stand still, then it is not kicking.
About the cylindrical rule,
you body was protected in the cylinder. But it doesn't mean you can use your arm or elbow to push the defenser even in the cylinder. you can move your shoulder and body to do it though.
Similar when do the screening, it is also protected by the cylinder rule. It is obvious that nobody hold up their arms.
By the way, Yongli, I did not call it faul at all if you still remember, I just told you not to use your arm to block my way.

Now that Chaohong mentions the rules, I looked up the official rules approved by FIBA in 2006. It can be downloaded here: http://www.fiba.com/asp_includes In particular, they mention the "cylinder principle" and show a diagram. The sides of the legal space (cylinder) established by a player is determined by "the outside edge of the arms and legs," but not the length of the shoulder. Please see the attached diagram./download. asp?file_ id=328 I wish we could call less of those trivial fouls and enjoy more of non-interrupted games. The good spirit is being competitive. But being competitive is not all about winning a game at all cost.See you all on Wednesday!YongliOn 4/9/07, Chaohong Cai <caicai0304@yahoo.com.cn > wrote:Hey guys,
I got the following from James about his kick on the
ball last Saturday. He believes that kick was NOT an
intentional one.
So, how about the following suggestions?
1, Do not yell out a call unless you are sure of the
rule you are going to refer to.
2, If possible, take several minutes to learn some
basic rules. This one is especially useful for those
who frequently called "being fouled".
Just try to avoid unnecessary "fight" and improve our
game quality in the future.

You know I don't usually argue in pickup basketball
games, but sometimes I know I'm right...
Section 6. Travel, Kick, Fist, Through Basket from
Below
Art. 1. A player shall not travel or run with the
ball, intentionally kick it, strike it with the fist
or cause it to enter and pass through the basket from
below.
