Hello everyone!

My name is Jack...living and working in Kuwait for four months now.
I am from the US, came here in March and have only trainined on the
stationary bikes available here. I will be in Dubai for 3 days...16-
18 July and if possible would like to rent a decent bike and ride
with some folks if possible. Let me know about any training rides
going on/times & dates/locations and level. I miss my bikes, which I
had to leave in the US, but would like to have a chance to get back
on one while in Dubai...thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Adrian,

Thanks for your answer.

Any more information you can give me is appreciated.
Like if it's possible to go for safe solo rides, How
far out into the desert can one ride, is there a good
off-road scene, etc.

Thanks!

Jim

BTW, I have seen the website. It looks very good.

I wanted to remind everyone that the Dubai Roadsters have group rides every Tuesday and Sunday evenings at Nad Al Sheba. This is on a loop circuit and caters to all levels of rider. For the more experienced there is a longer Ride every Friday morning, starting at the Lime Tree Café on Jumeirah Beach Road at 5.30am. This ride attracts around 70 riders and there are 3 distances that you can do; 70km, 100km, or 120km. The Ride finishes at the Café where you can enjoy a great coffee and meet all your fellow cyclists.

If you would like further information about these rides including maps, please email me at david@... and I will send the information to you.

2.        Dubai Tri Club News

SUMMER SIZZLER EVENT ONE!!!!!

WHEN? This Friday morning 11th May

WHAT TIME? Start at 8am so get there a bit before

WHERE? The SIZZLER beach is the one to the right of the old Jumeirah beach club facing the sea (they closed it a few months ago). Go along Jumeirah beach road away from the Burj, go past Dubai ladies club and old JBC on your left (you will pass coffee bean café on your right), take the next U turn at the lights, immediate right, and that brings you onto the beach!

ENTRY FEE? 30 Dhs (free to under 18s)

COURSE? TBC but some combo of swim and run (roughly 700m swim/3-4k run)

CAN I JUST DO PART OF IT? Of course! If you don’t want to run just swim! Or if you are a little nervous of the sea/swimming with other people, well just do one lap to get experience! You can either ‘race’ and be timed or just do bits of it for training

No pre-reg necessary just turn up!!

I would like 2 volunteers to take responsibility for inflating one sea monster (buoy) each and bringing him to the beach. In return you get free entry! Get in touch asap to take on your new sea friend!

Hope to see you there!

Please see Julia’s note below can anyone help to locate her camelback lost at rak tri?

Could you do me a huge favour & probably add a posting to the website or even better send out an email asking if someone found my Camel Bak after the race in RAK on Friday?

I threw it off after the 2nd lap on the bike and someone from the race staff took it. After the race I asked for it and they could not find it but promised to look for it and then leave it at the Hilton. Of course now they a) did not find it and b) suddenly claim that someone took it, saying he was my friend and would give it to me...

It is a light blue/silver backpack, brand Camelbak, and I had all kinds of bike repair stuff, a pump and some money in it.

And finally (for now) a beyond huge well done to former Tri Club President Adrian Hayes on reaching the North Pole last week! ‘Tougher than Ironman or just as Tough?’ Discuss… best arguments will win some sort of prize J

See you sizzling!

Julie

3.        Race of Champions in November and Triathlon Training Camp

I am attempting to write up what I know about the forthcoming Race of Champions

More Links.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=features/2007/abu_dhabi07

http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/161037/abu-dhabi-to-host-cycling-s-race-of-champions

http://www.asiatraveltips.com/news07/13-AbuDhabiCycling.shtml

It will be held here in Abu Dhabi in November this year and what this might (please note the word 'might') mean for us cyclists here in the UAE.

I was invited to meet with the organizers of this event last week and three things came up in the meeting.

1.  A need for volunteers.

This is a three day stage race. The days will be the Thursday, Friday and the Saturday. The organizers are 'looking' to encourage people like us i.e. cycling enthusiasts, to help/volunteer/marshal.  This would be on a voluntary basis, but people really would get up close to the best of the best in the Pro teams. People are encouraged to think about this opportunity and more news will be out soon (from the organizers).

2. A 'citizens' race.

The organizers plan to have a 'ten km' (ish) citizens race around the Marina Mall, the Emirates Palace Hotel etc. - A fantastic course if it goes ahead. Anyone will be allowed to take part. So get training!!

3. A slight/small/maybe/perhaps opportunity to enter an Expat Team in the race!! I cheekily asked about this when I learned the UAE National Team is going to be there.  Initially, the head poncho said "No!" but I persisted and said that we would be capable of keeping up with the peleton etc...

Well, to get to the point, he said that if can get 10 riders and 2 reserves together ASAP, then he would consider it. So, we need a kind of cycling or cycling-orientated CV/Resume from anyone interested. Please send me an e-mail ( sharkmankev@... )with this information on it, your age, nationality, city of residence here in the UAE, how long you've been cycling, your racing experience (you must have raced bikes somewhere at sometime). If we don't get the 10 in a couple of weeks, then the idea will be binned permanently. It's an amazing opportunity IF we get the numbers and IF the organizers allow us.

Professional Triathlete and Triathlete Coach, Jason Metters, is hosting/leading a weekend triathlon training weekend this coming weekend (10th/11th/12th) of May with the 10th/11th being at Jebel Hafeet and the 12th at Ghantoot (approx 40 km from Dubai and 90 km from Abu Dhabi). Please contact Jason on jasemett@... for availability and prices.

Thanks,

Kevin

4.        Cycling trip to Jordan in October 2007 (see attachments Jordan Bicycle Tour)

To all bikers,

After sending out the final bike trip proposal for the trip in May 2007, we only received 6 confirmations.  Unfortunately, there would not be enough participants to get the favourable ticket prices neither could the travel agent grant the special package price.  We would need a minimum of 12 persons to join the trip.

Therefore, we have decided to postpone the trip either later in the year or latest 3rd quarter of 2007.

As an option, I would like to attach a proposal to bike through Jordan.  The dates would be during Eid holidays / mid-October 2007 for a period of 4-5 days.

At present, I am negotiating the rates and I would need a commitment to join as rooms have to be blocked well in advance.

Please fill in the small reply form and either email or fax to Wolfi or Thomas latest on 15 May 2007.

The package price for the trip will be determined after receiving the number of participants.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

5.        Suggested Mirdiff Rides – Express Your Interest

For Mirdiff rides, there are a number of great circuits of varying lengths.   Here are the different routes we use:

1. Long Ride - 110km

Mirdiff - Mizhar - Al Khawaneej - Al Awir - Labab - Al Ain Rd - 611 - Hatta Rd - Mirdiff.

2. Medium Ride - 85 km

Mirdiff - Al Khawaneej - Al Awir - Labab - Al Ain Rd - Academic City Rd - Mirdiff

3. Short Ride - 55km

Mirdiff - Mizhar - Al Khawaneej - Al Awir - Hatta Rd - Mirdiff.

All good roads and very little traffic on a Friday morning.  The scenery through Al Awir and Labab is nice.

There is also a great ride out on the Kalba Rd that Simon Essex and his Sharjah lads ride that is spectacular.  I have normally driven to the rendezvous point 20km up the Kalba Rd, but it would make a great long ride from Mirdiff.

I suggest any ride from Mirdiff leave from Uptown Mirdiff either from Starbucks or the Gourmet Burger Bar Coffee Shop which I have forgotten the name of.  No problem using me as a contact initially.  I travel a fair bit and so I am not always in town to help organising rides but happy to help start up a small group ride..

There is also the possibility of early morning from Mirdiff leaving from between 04.30 and 05.00. Let me know if anyone is keen.

Cheers

Kind regards
Guy Hickling ghickling@...

6.        Ride Suggestions For People in Arabian Ranches, Greens, Springs, Gardens, Jumeirah Islands, etc

Hi to all of you, and thanks again for all your responses to my note in Wolfi's email.

I have attached a map which has various routes marked on it. I haven't checked them out yet myself, but some of you are already cycling one of these options, so they can't be bad. Please just let me know the road condition, i.e. kerb, emergency lane, etc.

Map Key as in attachment:

1 - Golden Tulip Hotel

2 - Arabian Ranches

3 - Al Ain Highway

4 - Past Bab Al Shams

So the options are as follows for a Friday morning ride:

A) Meet at the Golden Tulip and head out as shown, can apparently do 50 Km's out and then return, so a 100 Km or less route.

B) Meet at Arabian Ranches and head out towards the Al Ain highway. 102 Km's total.

C) From Arabian Ranches again but go past Bab Al Shams. 115 Km's total.

I am personally more inclined to start from Arabian Ranches as I am sure it is convenient for more people. Need votes on this though, as we will go with what the majority wants.

Then there is apparently a good 15 Km loop at the Golden Tulip which has lighting and is therefore good as an evening ride. I would be keen to do a Sunday & Tuesday evening ride there. Once again let me know your preference for the evening rides.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Thanks

Dave Killops

7.         Scott Bikes in the Giro D’ Italia 2007

GIRO D´ITALIA 2007

SAUNIER DUVAL-PRODIR are ready for the Corsa Rosa.

08/05/2007

The SAUNIER DUVAL-PRODIR riders who will take part in the 90th edition of the Giro d´Italia, set to kick off on Saturday, will meet tonight in Milan. Tomorrow, they´ll head for Sardinia, the Italian island that will welcome the beginning of the race this year. Coached by Pietro and Matteo Algeri, the yellow team´s line-up for the first Grand Tour of the season includes these nine men:

Gilberto SIMONI
Riccardo RICCÒ
Iban MAYO
Leonardo PIEPOLI
Manuele MORI
David CAÑADA
Ángel "Litu" GÓMEZ
Raivis BELOHVOSCIKS
Rubens BERTOGLIATI

Pietro Algeri is happy with his riders´ good shape and highlights the goal they´ve set for the race: "Of course, our prime goal is to see Simoni as the Giro winner. I´m sure he can do it because he´s become vastly experienced. Moreover, he told me that his physical condition is better now than in 2006. The whole team will work for him, including Riccò, who can learn a lot from Gibo. This doesn´t mean we won´t fight for stage wins: Riccò has a good chance to take mountaintop finish stages, and Piepoli or Mayo can win stages with difficult climbs. Then, men like Cañada or Mori on the mountains and "Litu" Gómez or Bertogliati on flat terrain will certainly be on the front."

8.        Dubai Roadsters have Road Rides for everyone

I wanted to remind everyone that the Dubai Roadsters have group rides every Tuesday and Sunday evenings at Nad Al Sheba. This is on a closed circuit and caters to all levels of rider. The rides begin at approximately 7.30pm, though there are always riders training here, and you can finish whenever you wish.
