Hey Pete,

I'm keen to race seriously. Possibly still need to put a few more
miles into the legs but it's coming. Give me a couple more weeks and
I think I'll be approaching race fitness. Been feeling stronger each
week.

PLEASE can someone in Dubai try to get hold of these application

Of course any suggestions are welcome - I think if someone who is

Do you have more info on the team, its ambitions, current racing calendar, sponsorship? etc etc

I can send you a detailed outline of my racing career since I was 14yrs old if required?

I would prefer to meet as one group and then split the groups at
later stages as required as long as the control is kept in the first
40 km. Mainly because A) The slow group riders benefit from sitting
on.(Tip- if your new don't take any wind, theres no shame in
avoiding turns at the front if your not fit enough yet!) B)It's more
social and not just an elite few in an earlier group. C)New riders
can get a lot of advice tips etc from more experienced riders.D)it's
a good change to ride in a big group. E) More serious and specific
training can be done on the Sunday/Tues rides.F)IT's more FUN!
I know that there is a few riders out there that like to rip it up
early but they should prove it 12km from the halfway water stop or
better still in the last 20km in the chain gang because thats when
it really counts for speed training.
Though a shorter distance, this is the basic format that pro teams
follow at base training camps (no water stop req. though, they have
a team car!)
As the days get cooler the rides for the training group will get
longer, by keeping to this format everyone will benefit.
Cheers
Pete.

Susan/Rick

I agree that a tired cyclist out on their own in the
exposed and hot conditions is a dangerous situation.
The last few weeks have been particularly tricky as
there has generally been a strong tail wind going out
and a head wind coming back - this gives less
experienced riders the impression that the miles are
rolling out quickly only to find they "bonk" coming
back. It is a tough ride coming back on your own and
shows Rick's tenacity.

At the half way point Pete said that the it would be
tough going on the 100+km ride, due to the wind and
the pace - many took the option of doing the 60km
ride. We are not saying this is an excuse to drop
riders in the middle of no-where but in a pack of 20+
riders it is hard to balance the requirements of those
wishing to do a social ride, or keep fit, or try a few
triathlons, or race competitively at national (UAE)
level.

At the moment the format is for all levels to start at
6am and split up part way through. Perhaps for the
long group there needs to be a 2nd split into a slower
group doing the full distance, and a competitive group
who do what they want. Alternatively the club can
return to two separate rides - a fast and a slow one -
as it was before the summer?

What are riders' views on the options????

Paul

Well done on your brave effort going it alone for the last 40km of the ride.
I would like to bring to the attention of everyone that for safety reasons
no rider should be left alone on a long ride.

Hi Guys from down south! We did a 100 yesterday out from Abu Dhabi and return - the wind, like you said, was wicked! Anyhow, money in the bank as they say!!

What do you think about numbers etc. I did the races last year and got kicked - all three of us expats did - all we ddi was try to chase down breaks etc and although it was good cardio training, we need around 8 regulars to take on the likes of Al Nasr!!

Good training!

Kevin

Yesterday's (Friday) 100 km+ ride with the wind as it were, was indeed a challenge. As an "intermediate" cycler (that's stretching it maybe) the pace / wind / heart rate proved a bit too much...I was left behind to complete the last 40 km solo....a real character builder, depleting my potassium reserves and encountering severe cramps in the process. But never fear we'll continue to push forward and hope for an occassional break in the Dubai winds that always seem to blow in the wrong direction.

After this mornings (Friday) run with the Dubai group I can firmly
say that things are going well. Out of this mornings 26 riders that
started the ride 10 did the longer ride of 100km into a hard wind.
The big ring was well used with 6 riders making it to Safra park
bridge together. For a current gauge I think all of these 6 riders
are easily capable of top 10 finish's in the up and coming race
season.
There is still no clear date for the start of the races which now
looks like it will be after ramadan.
Training rides are now held three times a week;
Fridays 6am - Meet outside limetree cafe.Two groups 60km(easy)/100km
(hard)
Sundays 7pm at Wolfis Bikes or 7.20pm at roundabout near Nad Al
Sheba next to new building with wind towers. 70-80km (hard/chain
gang).
Tuesdays same as Sundays but easier.

Hi Karen,

I have a very good quality GIANT TCR/CAMPAGNOLO CHORUS 10spd with
carbon forks/seatpin, look pedals and wireless computer, its a
medium size frame, I normally ride a 54cm, I guess you could change
the seatpin and lower the saddle.

Its a great bike and has done me proud, but now I have just bought a
new carbon bike. So the GIANT is up for sale anyway!

Let me know if you are interested,

Regards,

James - 050 7244779 Abu Dhabi

I never thought I'd be caught dead exercising outdoors in Dubai in August.

On March 29th 2004 I purchased a TREK 1200 road bike after completing Lance's 2 books and being inspired by him.

At 46 yrs. old and 103 kgs. I embarked on cycling by joining Wolfi's group on Friday mornings. I've only missed a few Fridays since starting to ride in April and this past Friday I actually finished 88 kms with 6 other riders....before then I found myself lagging behind solo after about 50 kms. I'm now feeling better at 88 kgs. and cycling has become a daily adventure (Pakistani truck drivers beware).

I know that I'll never be able to compete with some of our advanced riders and I wouldn't even try. But, it is a sport in which an individual can compete with himself and grow from the experience and benefit from the fitness that this exhausting sport provides.

For those of you that are intermediate riders enjoying the sport...Let's continue to pursue and improve. For the other advance riders have mercy on us and draft while you can...!!!

Looking forward to some events starting in October.

Hello,

The moderator of the uae_roulers group has changed the group's name.
This means that both the group's email address and the group home page
location have changed.

The group email address:

The group home page location:

If you have links which point to this group or an address book entry
for the group, you should update them, as the old addresses will no
longer work.
