Fricken A!!  What a day it was to go ride a bike.  Despite the great weather we only had 25 racers show up for the 2nd battle of the young RR season at West Creek.  Tailwinds on the way out with headwinds on the way back was to play into tonight's race strategy  The group all stayed together on the way out with no major action until lap 2 up the climb where Kumiega stretched the elastic a bit, followed by a short lived break by Peeling.  Eventually Kane, Sergey and Sherwood got away with Poulin, Woodruff, Kumiega, and Peeling left to chase.  If they could catch up then it would be 6 men of RUUD vs. Kane, a showdown not seen in the these parts of Tioga County since the DSS parking lot incident between Poulin and one of Tioga County's finest.  And oh yes, it was to be as the 4 chasers made up the gap within the next 3 miles.  Once everyone was together the strategy was pretty simple:  keep attacking Kane until he folded like deuce-five off suited in a game of poker.  The usual jovial and spirited Kane was simply not impressed by the attacks from the men of RUUD.  While Kane's smack talking did little to intimidate the troops, none of the attacks could stick as Peeling, Poulin, Sherwood, Woodruff, and Sergey all did there best.  In the end it came down to a sprint finish with Kumiega taking off a bit early and being passed by Sergey and Kane.  Kane tried to pass the youngster but was simply unable to do so as Sergey made it 2 in a row.

Thanks to everyone for not ridng around in the parking lot pre-race.  Next week Singer 6:30 pm.

The champion spirit
Cyclist surmounts health crises to win titles

Donnelly

Charlsie Donnelly.

The name is unusual, and the girl herself is one of a kind -- for more reasons than meet the eye.

Just ask the woman she calls her bicycling "coach," Shelley Reynolds.

Even though Donnelly, of Van Etten, is state champion in her age group, she's not apt to tell anyone, Reynolds says. "She's very focused, very motivated, very humble -- and a lot of her friends don't have a clue what she does. Nobody at her school knows how phenomenal she is."

Donnelly, 16 and a junior at Spencer-Van Etten High School, is the youngest member of Reynolds' Mission in Motion Cycling Team, the first all-woman team in central New York.

"Last year I had the honor of taking her to many races and supporting her as she proudly raced for Mission in Motion and Tioga Velo Club (TVC)," Reynolds says.

Now Donnelly bears several titles: the New York State Junior Women's Road Race Champion, NYS Junior Women's Criterium Champion, and NYS Junior Women's Time Trial Champion.

Thanks to the support and donations of the Tioga Velo Club, Mission in Motion Cycling Team and many TVC cyclists who just wanted to contribute to Charlsie's racing, she also participated in the United States Cyling Federation (USCF) Junior National Championship races, Reynolds says. At USCF Nationals, she placed sixth in her time trial and eighth in her road race among the best young riders in the country.

But not only is this blue-eyed girl a champion in the world of biking. She has also taken on serious medical challenges in her young life.

Surgery removed part, but not all, of a brain tumor that was discovered when she was 10 years old.

"It was very bad," Donnelly says. In the days that followed, she couldn't move her right side. Weeks of intensive therapy helped her regain her lost functions.

To strengthen her immune system, she embarked on a strict regimen that involved plenty of alternative methods.

She started biking seriously when she was 12 or 13. She was on a 60-mile course in Owego when she noticed that she completed it before some other cyclists completed a 30-mile course.

Reynolds, she says, got her started and has encouraged and supported her along her meteoric rise in the world of cycling.

Just prior to nationals, tests revealed the presence of another brain tumor.

That was news Donnelly kept mostly to herself.

Almost two months ago, she endured another surgery. Two days later, she and Reynolds were walking laps in the pediatric I.C.U.

She'll be able to return to competitive cycling within weeks -- and in the meantime, she's practicing in her basement by watching training DVDs.

She can't wait to get back to the pastime she loves.

"When I'm racing I get all nervous and pumped," she says. She's planning to go to a college -- one with a racing team -- as she pursues a career in either nutrition or coaching.

Reynolds calls Charlsie Donnelly "her hero."

"She truly has the heart of a lion," Reynolds says, "and the face of a lamb."

Thanks for the heads-up, Mike. FYI-Foster Valley Road is undergoing the
same repairs/renovations, though it's not as dangerous. The good news is
that Foster Valley Road looks like they are prepping it to do a full
repaving. I have my fingers crossed.

Just in case any of you are out riding over Robinson Hill or down Struble
Road... watch out. There are three of those "cuts" across the road (full
width), that are filled with gravel. (pipes or something were installed as

under-drainage)... the temporary "repairs" are hazardous to bicyclists.

The one on Robinson Hill (between Case Road and Struble Road) isn't too bad,

plus it's plenty visible so you can see it as you approach. But if you're
going downhill on Struble, WATCH OUT. There are two of them there...
they're deeper cuts, not well filled, and the approach is not particularly
visible at downhill speed. Kind of like riding over a sharp curb across the

roadway. Going uphill it's not so bad, but be forewarned if you head
downhill on this road... and there are two of them, maybe a few hundred
yards apart.

Hey everyone,

Paul is swamped, so I'l do my best to substitute for him with this week's results......

We're not in Kansas anymore !!

I renamed this week's event The Wizard of Oz Race of Truth.

What a way to start the Time Trial Season !! Sure, hit us with a nasty headwind on the outbound 5 miles, and a freshly fertilized field that smelled like, well let's just says Toto didn't lay down that smell !! And with the wind, we were able to smell that "odor" for miles, the pain has officially started! Somewhere on the outbound leg I swear I saw Glinda the Good Witch, but later realized it must have been oxygen deprivation from hammering into the wind and that it must have just been Debbie Sprankle-Rohn as I passed her.

Despite the smell, the wind, and a cool evening, 21 TVC riders put out in search of the Emerald City and the Wizard, or maybe it was just our volunteer Rick Bunting who was back at the finish line.

So, onto the results :

The Wizard's top 5 go something like this, in 5th overall was Adam "I don't need no Aero Bars" Farabaugh at 24:49, coming in next , in the 4th spot, was Jeff "Helicopter Boy" Poulin crossing the line in 24:33 , in 3rd was Harold "I'm back to reclaim my Title" Peeling coming in at 24:18, in 2nd was John "Disco is Back" Hover at 24:09, and getting the ballon ride back to Kansas was Todd "Look out, I got me some Aero Bars" Sherwood at 24:01.

For the Women, Shelley Reynolds picks up where she left off the last time I saw her TTing and pops off her first win at 25:35, chasing was Debbie Sprankle-Rohn at 26:61, Karla Eisch on her new bike came across in 30:54, and the car poolers, Rebecca Hemzik (32:26) and Laura Lamash (37:39) round out the top 5 women.

Juniors [Under 18] :
1. Adam Farabauch - 24:49

Seniors [Age 19 - 34] :
1. Rob Leary - 26:25

Veterans [Age 35 - 44]:
1. Todd Sherwood - 24:01
2. Mike Grygus - 26:43

Masters [Age 45 - 54] :
1. Jeff Poulin - 24:33
2. Lloyd Campbell - 25:01
3. Paul Palmer - 25:43
4. Paul Speranza - 25:52
5. Chuck Braman - 28:35

Grand Masters [Age 55 +]:
1. John Hover - 24:09
2. Ed Burns - 25:42
3. Dan O'Brien - 29:02
4. Dick Rohn - 29:15
5. Dick Litzel - 30:41
Also Rick Bunting is in there somewhere, but I don't have his time as he gave to paul and I only have a printout, but trust me Rick was FLYING down the course !

Women :
1. Shelley Reynolds - 25:35
2. Debbie Sprankle-Rohn - 26:51
3. Karla Eisch - 30:54
4. Rebecca Hemzick- 32:26
5. Laura Lamash - 37:39
Also Karen Holm who got called back into work and ran the TT later so I don't have her time....

A hearty thanks from all us munchkins to Rick Bunting for riding through the twister early in order to take care of the clock, and to Karen Holm for preparng and bringing the post TT sandwiches!

If anyone is in the wrong agegroup, let Paul ( pwp100@... ) and Jeff (jpoulin@...) know so they get you straightened out in the timing program and the points.

NEXT WEEK : In keeping with the movie theme, "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of..." SUFFERING on Rt. 38B, 10 miles, bring your climbing gearing. Registration closes at 6:15 PM with the first rider headed UP at 6:30 PM.

Keep the rubber side down!

Importance: High

I and everyone else, are well aware that people want to know their results.

Nobody is being stubborn on the finish line camera outside of spending the huge money (5000 or more) to purchase a professional setup. At the annual meeting (you were there) , the idea of a DVR was suggested and we tasked that out to a couple of members to investigate. Those people who are looking at the DVR just have not had time to address it. I HAVE been in contact with Gary Toth on the subject also, this was onlhy a few weeks ago, he sent me his settings and everything already, we just have not ahd the time to look into it further.

On the other options, when I asked for people to send me contacts regarding someone doing the service so I could price it out, I got NOTHING.  I'll try and save it for next time.

Exactly...
We all have great ideas and great intentions and want to help, but the reality is there just isn't enough time in the day.
We cannot expect miracles to happen and 20 volunteers show up out of nowhere at the last minute, so we need to plan ahead.

That is why we should just go ahead and make arrangements to pay someone to do it for us.  Who can argue against paying $1.35 per rider and increasing the entry fee to offset the cost?  Riders will be happy with fast and accurate results, we won't have to beg for volunteers to spot at the finish line trying to read and remember numbers, and the officials will have a little less stress that day.

For anyone not driving out to Owego for the TT on Thursday, we're riding from Kirkwood Valley Park, (off Rt 11 near 5 mile pt and across the road from Ind Park.)

Riding out to Windsor and back following side roads along route 17, nothing steep, nice rollers, easy route, very little traffic.  If we're up to it, we can venture up Dunbar Road to North Road for some hills :)

Thursday - 5:30 pm... nice weather only.

Serotta β€œ7-11 Murray” Bicycle for sale

This bike is a classic, and very rare, and I have been told that it is a collector's item.  I purchased the frame at the Serotta factory in 1986, repainted from its original 7–11 motif.  I was told that it was ridden by 7-11’s Jeff Pierce.  Photos of the flat brake bridge that was the trademark of the Murray labeled bicycles that Serotta made for the 7-11 Team are available.  I hate to part with this bike, but it is just sitting around collecting dust and really would be much happier if it was being ridden by someone.  The sapphire color paint and chrome is very beautiful.

Let the racing season begin!

Thanks to Bob Bresee and the woman that help him for lap counting!!! 25
eager cycling souls made it to the 2007 season kickoff race. We have several
new riders that promise to make this season unpredictable and challenging.
The weather was ominous but there were only a few sprinkles, otherwise the
conditions were fine, no wind and cooler temps. There were some no shows
because of this weekend's BCR. I assume Adam was recovering, he did 3 races,
only 75 miles of hammering!

The pace started with a customary warm up lap then the pace kicked up.
Sergey, Kane and Kumiega broke away early on. The peleton was not interested
in working together to bring the 3 back in tow. There were some attacks but
nothing sustained as those 3 rode off into the sunset. The finish is as
follows:

A Riders

1. Sergey
2. Kumiega
3. Kane
4. Grygus
5. Leary
6. Speranza
7. Adams
8. Shelley
9. Meier
10 Singler

Prime 1

1. Grygus
2. Leary
3. Palmer

Prime 2

1. Kane
2. Kumiega
3. Sergey

B Riders

1. Lloyd (hey he should be racing with the A's)
2. Ferro
3. Elmy
4. O'Brien

Prime 1

1. Ferro
2. Lloyd
3. Elmy

Prime 2

1. Ferro
2. Campbell
3. Elmy

Women

Karen Holm took top honors, she stomped the competition! I think she would
have beat Kurt also :)

Next week's race is a Westcreek, sign in by 6:15 and the race begins at
6:30. Remember, warm-up on the road!! Need to stay away from the social
service bldg.

Hey everyone,

Well the first points TT is tomorrow, May 4th at Rt. 38. We will meet up at the social services parking lot. PLEASE everyone remember to park at the north end of the lot, furthest away from the DSS building, and also PLEASE remember there is no warming up or cooling off in the lot, you should ride from your car out to Rt. 38 and warm up on the road, cool down on the road.

Weather looks great, sunshine, low to mid 60s.

Remember in order to score points, and as required for our insurance coverage, you need to be a member. If you are not,  TT VPs, or myself for a form. You can also get it off the website (  http://tiogavelo.com/docs/tvcmembapp07.pdf   )  and fill it out ahead of time and birng it with your check.

Chef Karen Holm, in between working her DB upgrade at work over the weekend, did not get all the sandwiches prepared for the Binghamton Circuit race (though nobody noticed, we seemed to have plenty). SO, she will be taking the remaining fixings and preparing sandwiches for us to enjoy post TT, so bring your favorite drink and partake. She may have cookies also, depending on what survived BCR and Snger.

Also, Dawn  ( aprildawn@...  )  is still looking for some volunteers to run the clock, etc. So let her know if you can do that.

Keep the rubber side down,

Lloyd

All,

First, thank-you for coming and thank-you to the volunteers.  We had lots of help but still could have used a few more pair of hands so we are doubly grateful to:

- Norm Valerio as our reliable Chief Official
- Marsha Kapinas for setting up BikeReg, downloading all your info, preparing registration, and officiating.
- Karen Holm for making the sandwiches and cookies, registration, and officiating.
- Charlsie Donally, our lone "volunteer at large" doing a great "first time, under fire" experience at registration
- Jim Delaney and Dawn Fox for handling the prizes and helping throughout
- Lloyd Campbell, our faithful pres, who gave up racing to help and attend to wounded (unfortunately)
Plus nurse Carrie Peeling, Pat Kapinas, Margaret Thompson, Mike Kumiega, and Paul Palmer.

Finally, Joe Walker is the last volunteer mentioned 'cuz he is cleaning up the (ahem) unreadable waivers and registration forms.  Here is the best he can do as of tonight.  Please send me any corrections up until Friday midnight; then these results will head to USA Cycling for rankings and upgrades, and to Marka Wise for LAJORS medals.

Thank-you, and see you at Hollenbeck's next Sunday!

Good morning,
I need 2 people to help this Thurs at rt. 38.

One person holds the stop watch and says, "Go", every 30 seconds.  Then as racers cross the finish line, he/she taps a button.  Paul does the rest with the clock and computer :)

The second person gets the clilp board with the starting order.  That person calls racers to the starting line.  Then as racers cross the line, he/she writes down the racer's number.

Volunteers just need to be at Paul's truck at 6:15.  He'll explain things in more details and give you everything you need.  The first racer starts at 6:30.

I need volunteers for the following weeks too:

May 3rd:    rt. 38
May 10th:  rt. 17C
May 17th:  rt. 38B  *Jan and Rob have already volunteered.
May 24th   rt. 369 (20 mile)

Please send me an e-mail at aprildawn@... if you can help.

Thanks,
Dawn
