Health Net Pro Cycling Team presented by Maxxis

Jones solos to McLane Criterium win.

March 4, 2006
For Immediate Release

Merced, CA – Gord Fraser’s winning streak at the McLane Pacific Downtown Criterium is over. But that’s okay because the man who ended it at four in a row was his Health Net Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis teammate, Mike Jones.

Jones first shattered, then left behind the remnants of a nine-rider break in the final lap and took a three-second win over Jackson Stewart (KodakGallery-Sierra Nevada) and Mark McCormick (Colavita-Sutter Home).

The race was unusual for a number of reasons, including the fact that this was the first time anyone could remember a break succeeding in the fast, flat 50-lap/40-mile race, which typically ends in a bunch sprint. Not only that, the nine-man break went a way before the mid-point of the race, a long time to be out there and not get swept up.

Not long after the break formed, a wreck in the main field – which took down, among others, Health Net Presented by Maxxis sprinter Greg Henderson and Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly) – helped the front group extend its gap from 10 seconds out to 30 seconds. But since all the major teams were represented – Jones and Kyle Gritters (Health Net-Maxxis), McCormick and Gustavo Artacho (Colavita), Nick Reistadt and Caleb Manion (Jelly Belly), Sean Sullivan and Ivan Stevic (Toyota United) and Stewart – the main field seemed content to let them stay away, for a while at least.

“The break was a 50-50 proposition for us,” said Health Net Presented by Maxxis directeur sportif Jeff Corbett. If it came to the line intact, Kyle had a good chance at the win. But we really didn’t want to try that. We wanted to try to shatter the break and see where the pieces fell. And if we didn’t like that, we’d bring it back for the sprint.”

With 12 laps to go and the break holding a :38 lead, Toyota went to the front with Tony Cruz driving for several laps. The gap immediately fell to :29, but for several more laps it held around there. Then, with six to go, two things happened. Health Net Presented by Maxxis went to the front of the peloton to take control, and Mike Jones went on the attack in the break. Almost immediately, four riders – Manion, Stevic, Artacho and Gritters – were shed from the front group.

“With six to go, we went to the front to close it down if needed,” said Jones’ teammate Tim Johnson. “But then we just let Jones do his thing.”

“When Jones attacked, the bunch split and we went to another 50-50 move, only smaller,” Corbett said. “I knew the freshest guy in the remainder of the break would be the one to win, so I told Jones not to do too much work.”

“I basically sat on Nick (Reistadt) for four and a half laps,” Jones explained. “I knew he had more to gain by working because I had the guys lined up behind me to bring it back if they needed to.”

“We were holding back the last lap,” Corbett said, “because we wanted to give Jones the chance.”

“When I went with one lap to go,” Jones said, “I think Jackson, Mark and Nick all hesitated just a bit and I took advantage of it.”

Coming out of the first turn on the final lap, it was Reistadt who reacted first, but he couldn’t quite close down the gap, which had opened to several bike lengths. From there, it was a time trial to the finish.

“Even with half a lap left, we still felt that we could bring it back if we needed to,” Corbett said. “It was a calculated gamble, but that’s what it always is.”

But when neither Stewart or McCormick could close down the gap either, the gamble paid off – with one of the biggest wins of Mike Jones’ career.

“The last half lap was hard,” Jones said. But after riding his heart out at the Amgen Tour of California and simply running into a string of bad luck, it was about time his hard work paid off.

After a tough week for the entire team at the Amgen Tour of California, Corbett spoke for everyone when he said, “It’s just good to get the first win out of the way.”

The team will go for its second win Sunday in race two of the McLane Pacific Cycling Classic, the Foothills Road Race.

Notes

Despite going hard to the tarmac at a speed approaching 30 mph, Henderson escaped with road rash on his leg and arm and some bruising. Still, after the race, he said “I feel a bit wrecked.” However, he is expected to make the start of the road race Sunday.

cycleroadie1

Hey everyone,

For those not at the meeting I wanted to send out a message outlining
a couple of items. The second item I took an informal vote on at the
meeting, and everyone thought it was a good idea, so we'll try it for
this season and see how it goes. If it works well and doesn't cost the
club tons of cash, maybe we'll keep it around.

1) Adopt-A-Highway on Rt.38 B

Lorrie Elmy has secured a 1 mile section of Rt. 38B under the Adopt-A-
Highway program and will be having it marked as “Cycling Friends of
Dave Panella”. This is striclty tied to Lorrie so no single club has
to take responsibility for it. However I am sure TVC will surely come
out in support of it.

Having it on Rt. 38B will let many riders who knew Dave see it when
they are out riding.

Lorrie will post cleanup days to the local cycling groups so that
roadies, Mountain Bilkers, and anyone else who knew Dave can come out
and work to keep Dave’s mile clean. If she gets as many people out as
I think she will, 1 mile of cleanup should go fast...

Hopefully afterwards the roadies can go for a road ride and the
Mountain Bikers can head up to Oakley.

There is no cost ...all that is asked is that - ( those who
volunteer ) do 4 clean-ups yearly. The Adopt A Highway folks provide
the safety vests , bags etc ...and a little safety speech prior to
beginning . There is no obligation needed from anyone ...this is
strictly a volunteer " make you feel good thing " in memory of
Dave ... hopefully with a really good ride afterwards !!!

Kim is delighted that the cycling community is doing this for Dave.

2) Local Race entry fee reimbursement for all TVC Members

- Any TVC Member will get a $5.00 discount off their entry fee at some
of the races listed below (Still waiting for final word on whether
Lakefest and Race for Sight will go off for instance, so list is not
final). Then the TVC will reimburse the promoter the total amount they
discounted. Promoter will have a current list of TVC members to verify
members.

- For Pre-Registered people (TVC races, possibly Race for Sight if it
comes back…) , we’d have to give them back 5 bucks when they get their
numbers

- This will help TVC members by getting them a break on their entry
fees, and hopefully help promoters get more cyclists into their
events.

- Possible Races offered at (will be 3 races, these are just
possibilities):
1) TVC Cat 4/5 race (Same day as ESG Qualifier)
2) Lakefest (If they have it)
3) Race for Sight if someone picks it up
4) Strawberry Festival
5) Applefest

The Tao of cyclocross (with apologies to Lao Tzu)-

The ride that can be finished without abject suffering is not the perfect ride.
The frame that can be broken is not the perfect frame.
The run-up is the beginning of sky and dirt and suffering.
Cyclocross is the mother of the ten thousand agonies.
When you are at one with pain, the pain is experienced willingly.
Ever painless, one can see sky and grass.
Ever suffering, one can see only pain.
The two spring from the same source, but differ in name; this appears as cyclocross.
The gate to all mystery.

Hey everyone,

I'll be enjoying some of the nice weather Saturday with a ride. This is  not an official TVC fun ride, but if anyone wants to tag along, I'd welcome the company. just log some miles, 16 - 18 MPH, mostly flat, no BIG climbs, just want to see what kind of legs I have for early in March. Leave from lot behind Ted's Bike shop at 11:00 AM on Saturday, be going west to Owego and then return, exact route, I am working that out, will probably do same ride Friday (I am off from work) to iron out the route.. Should be 30 - 35 pretty flat miles.

Please email me if you plan to come along as if nobody is, I'll leave from a site a little closer to my house (as in I won't need much parking). Also if anyone wants to go Friday, let me know also, be heading out at 11:00 still, but most likely park at the end of the Rail to Trail in Vestal, but that's negotiable.

Keep the rubber side down,

Lloyd

I've heard back from a few people who are coming, so we will definitely be leaving from the lot behind Ted's at 11:00 AM today (Saturday) if anyone else wants to join in. If not, get out and ride anyways, weather going back to March-like next week.

We had a nice turn out of about 16-18 riders show up for the ride leaving from Chenango Bridge.  The group headed up West Chenango at a good pace splitting into a few small group, once up near the airport we took a left on Knapp and went past the dump then down the 40+mph decent of Anderson down to 26.  Took a left on 26 and heading into Endicott.  Once again the kids got frisky and we split into 2 groups with the second one chasing.  Along the way we lost a rider in the mix to a flat tire. So we waited for him down in West Corners.  Decided not to wait and back tracked up 26 looking for him, found him and kept going.  Now is when the fun begins as we head up Twist Run, a narrow, shoulderless cat 1 climb that heads into Endwell.  Once over the top the group heads for the next set of repetitive climbs up Farm to Market Road, this immediately got ugly as riders were left all over the road like empty Genny Cans after a highschool party.  The lead group of Faruzel, Kumiega, Kane , and Kapinas lead to the top.  After a quick break we headed back up West Chenango and took a little detour down Dimmock Hill before falling down to route 12 and the finish and a bag of pretzels.  I had 53 miles and 3:22 of riding time.  No major incidents to report as a good time was had by all.

Everyone,

The Race for Sight is back!  This great race keeps growing in popularity and will as always run on it's traditional 3rd Saturday in July.  The race will again benefit the Association for Vision Rehabilitation and Employment (AVRE) and the Lions Clubs of Binghamton and Windsor, so please plan to be there!

To accommodate the increased number of riders, this year the race will have an "A" and "B" field, with awards to the top three male/females, juniors, and Masters 55+ in each field, plus top 3 tandems.  They also plan to move the finish a little higher on the hill to string out the field a bit more.  AVRE encourages early registration at:  http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3295

See the flyer for details, and come race to help and thank the AVRE and Lions!

Please pass this along!

O.K., O.K.--only indirectly a bicycle topic, but knowing the group to be basically a high adventure group, and while talking to Jim May yesterday, realized this was a way to get him this information without searching out his e.m. address.  Besides, TVC has a history with GFLBT as well--back in the Mike Tacci days.   They were the official baggage haulers when we rode from SP to SP. It was a good and also humorous money raiser for TVC.   As people struggled to pile their luggage on a TVC truck, they were told the arbitrary rate for the service.  Any resistance to their quoted fee was met with a toss of the luggage back to the ground and some short lipped advice on how they could strap it to their bicycle.  Irreverent, funny, effective....

Come join us at this event and the GFLBT.

KAYAKING IN ANTARCTICA

Kayak Master Louise Adie of Trumansburg will present a talk/slide show on Kayaking in Antarctica at Binghmaton University, Lecture Hall 10,  Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m.   Ms. Adie has lead five trips over the past two seasons and will share her ventures in Antarctic waters, viewing penguins, seals, whales and icebergs.   Free.   Public is invited.

Enter this in your calendar early!!  And pass the word to your friends and listservs.   This is a unique presentation you will not want to miss.  Wildlife and kayaking activity as you have never seen it before.  Concise, clear, artistic presentation. I sampled this presentation in February.  It was excellent!!

The presentation is by a STBC friend from many years past.  I first met Louise in 1980 when she was coordinating  about 40 of us (including Mark Wheeler and Augie Mueller from STBC)  bicyclists to ride the many back bicycle routes that went into the very popular and now long out of print multi-colored NYS Finger Lakes Bicycle Touring Map that covered parts or all of 21 NYS counties,

In celebration of the map's publication, Louise planned and directed the first GFLBT event in 1981 as a then employee of the Finger Lakes SP and Recreation Region.  STBC got involved that first year and took over the event in 1982.  We are looking forward to year 26 June 9-11....all thanks to Louise's vision.  See www.southerntierbicycleclub.org for details.

To know Louise is to be exposed to outside activities.  After the bicycle experience,  I next saw Louise traversing the trails at Salmon Hills at what I considered lighting speed. Louise has taught Nordic skiing for nearly 30 years.  This includes beginners as well as seasoned racers, youth, teens and Masters.  Louise has raced and marathoned dozens of times including 13 2-day marathons.

Louise has kayaked thousands of miles, including a solo expedition of 450 miles along the shores of Lake Ontario over a 6 week period to celebrate her 50th birthday.  In her closet are mountain and road bikes, skis, roller skis, snowshoes, kayaks and enough cold weather gear to sink a ship.

At BU, Lecture hall 10, 7 p.m., Thursday, April 20 you can get an update on some her most recent adventures.  Hope you can attend.   Money back guarantee is in effect......

later,  Augie Mueller, Vestal, NY

Hey everyone,

I hope many of you are taking advantage of the warm days this week to get some riding in, I am heading out again this afternoon, yesterday sure was nice, and today should be toasty warm !!

Anyway, this SATURDAY, April 1, will be our first official TVC fun ride for the year. Leave from the parking lot behind Ted's Bike shop at 1:00 PM sharp. I plan to herd the peloton out to Owego, we'll stop at the Credit Union lot and most likely split into groups depending on who wants to do what. Anyone wanting to tag along with me, I'll be headed out through Owego, out 38 towards Newark Valley, and do a lap of West Creek and then return. Mostly flat, in the 40 mile range. If speeds split up the group we will regroup periodically. Others wanting to climb like madmen and madwomen, or go on a different route, can group up and head to the hills or wherever after we stop at the CU.

Right now the weather says just a few showers, if it changes and it looks like it'll be a rainy day, I might move the ride to Sunday, but right now plan on Saturday and I'll send out another email to the group.

Lastly, the Fun Rides on April 15th, and 22nd, I'll not be available for those dates ( That week I"ll be time-trialing next to the ocean in the mornings and sitting on the beach in the afternoons. I know, it sure would be nicer being up here in the rain and cool weather.... not !!). So if anyone wants to organize the rides those days, feel free. Otherwise, just group up and head off on your own.

Dear TVC members,
Sara is looking for volunteers for this year's Hollenbeck's race, I know
many of you will be racing at this event. Please ask friends or family
members if they plan on coming to watch, if they would be interested in
helping out.

I helped at registration and finish line last year and had a blast (it's
always fun to listen to Glenn's various cycling tales while standing at
the finish line!) And that finish climb is really fun to watch, I have
to say that the most exciting finish last year was the Junior men (no
other group sprinted up that climb as fierce as they did!) It is
exciting to see such drive and desire!

So if you can help them out, please email Sara sb65@.... At
this point, volunteer positions are open, so you could probably take
your pick!

Binghamton Circuit Race- April 30th- We will also need volunteers
throughout the day, best part is you can volunteer during other races
and still be able to race.
We will need the most assistance at registration in the morning and at
the finish line of each race. We need about 10 pair of eyes to even
come close to identifying the finishers at this race. Thanks, Marsha

Hi FLCC,

It's that time of year again! The Hollenbeck Spring Classic Road Race is
happening on Sunday, May 7. I am starting my search for volunteers so
please email me your availability and desired job if interested. I have
already lost some of my regular volunteers to either other events or
they have moved out of town so I really need your help! Please talk to
your friends and relatives and see if they would like to come watch an
exciting event, plus help a local club for a few hours on what promises
to be a beautiful Sunday morning.

I won't be returning to sunny Ithaca until April 18, so in the meantime
please email me with your desired position (registration, pace or wheel
vehicle, finish line scorer, etc) and I'll add you to the list. Please
spread the word (announcement below) to other listserves throughout NY.

Thanks for volunteering!
Sara

Hi friends,
This Tuesday is our first time trial of the season!  We have 22 time trials and we need 2 volunteers each night.  In order to get 44 volunteers, we need everyone who does the time trials to volunteer 1 to 2 times.   It could either be yourself or a loved one that helps.  The 2 people stand at the start/finish line.  One holds the clip board and tells riders when to leave and then writes down their number as they cross the finish line.  The second holds the clock and says, "Go" every 30 seconds and then taps a button when the riders cross the line.   It's pretty easy and I always try to pair an experienced person with a new volunteer.

Please send me an e-mail and let me know when you can help.

Hey everyone,

Well it looks to be windy with showers on Saturday, while Sunday is sunny and a little less windy. So let's move the "Fun Ride" to Sunday. Same deal, start at 1:00 PM from the lot behind Ted's, out to Owego Credit Union on 17C  where we can split up into groups depending on who wants to do what. My route remains the same, out 38 to West Creek Course and a lap around the course and return. We'll do some pacelining to save the legs and maybe kick it up a little on West Creek (depending on what everyone feels like of course...) then regroup for the ride back through Owego...

Anyone heading out today ( I hope to be) , gonna be summer like, enjoy !!

keep the rubberside down,

Lloyd
