Here's the "race report" you wanted. I'm not sure it's fit to print in the
newsletter:
MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT MOUNTAIN BIKE
Twas the night before the New Year when all through the house
The tequila was flowing right into Ruk's mouth.
With mountain bikes poised in the garage with great care
In hopes the full moon would soon warm the air.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds...(NOT!)
But they were banished to the upstairs of the house instead.
And Tom in his kerchief and John in his cap,
Of course with no helmet...can you imagine that?
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
The partiers grabbed their beer and went to see what was the matter.
The riders were ready to start with a flash.
Julie's alligator horn would signal the great "Midnight Bash."
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave a luster of midday to riders below.
When what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But an expert mountain bike racer flat on his rear!
With an inebriated rider, NOT lively NOR quick,
We knew in a moment this WAS NOT Saint Nick.
Some drunk and some sober, they all looked insane,
The crowd whistled and shouted and called them by name:
"Now Hover! Now Wilbur! Now Reynolds and Ruk!"
"Can't we ride faster? This cold really sucks!"
To the sign in box at Oakley, to the top of the wall
Tim left champagne for the riders they must drink it all.
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane takes flight,
John was way off the front without even a light.
So up to the trailhead the cyclists they flew
With Digital Head Trips, red blinkies and reflective vests too.
In a twinkling they got to the head of the trail,
A crash, skid and smash and Ruk's loud wail.
As they drew their last swigs and were turning around
There was Ruk again with his ass on the ground.
He tried speeding away, falling head over foot,
His clothes were all tarnished with ice, snow and soot.
A camelback he had flung, like a Pro, on his back,
But he looked like a novice nailing each tree with a head-on smack.
Tom's eyes how they twinkled. "A moonlit ride, how merry!
I'm psyched to be out here, guys, but quite wary...
Can Ruk make it back? I have doubts, you know.
He's spending less time on his bike and more in the snow!"
The remains of his goggles Ruk held tight in his teeth,
Wrapped his bike around others encircling them like a wreath.
He bruised his poor butt when he smashed into Shelley,
Then he tried to ride straight but his legs were like jelly.
He was smashing and crashing, a right sorry assed elf,
And we laughed when we saw him in spite of ourselves.
His bleary red eyes and his spinning head,
Soon gave us to know we had something to dread.
He sang praises and bragged about his "Big 35 Watts" hard at work,
But his light burned out quickly and he felt like a jerk.
And wishing he hadn't tied on such a load,
Tom gave him a push and up the trail they all rode.
John sprang off the front, to the three gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But the partiers exclaimed as they rode into sight,
Happy New Year to all and to all a good night!

Pete,
That all sounds terrific. Thanks for putting in the time and energy! All the
other women had really positive feedback last year. The woman who won and I
were both talking about running women and CAT 5 men together to "fill out" the
field a bit. I haven't a clue what the "regulations" are on that, but I know
some of the big races put women and CAT 5 men together for road races. I
loved your course, but two riders off the front of a 5 rider race made for a
"long day at the races."
Happy Trails,
Shelley

Awsome Pete!! When you decide on the early date - let me know and I will
forward the info to Glenn Swann - that way we can draw from this area as well.
There used to be a spring series in Wilkes-Barre PA for years that ran in
March - it was cold but somehow we always managed to race...
Possibly the first/ second weekend in april would give us more odds??
Either way - sounds great and I'll be there!
Thanks for your efforts..

No reason to discriminateagainst the 1's. Might as well include the 1's also
and make it a cat 1-2-3 race. 5 laps would be even better, more of a chance
to separate the men from the boys.

I think with a date that early, it would be more likely then not that the
weather would be a problem but if you want to take a chance......
By the way, thanks for your efforts in promoting the race(s).

TVCers,
For 1999 I am planning to promote 2 races around New Lisbon. Like last
season, I am going to do a road race within a week or so of July 4th; it
will be on the same course. Fortuneately, they repaved Route 51. I am
thinking of uping the distance and including cat. 2's. The categories
would break down like this: cat 2-3 would do 4 laps, cat 4-5 would do
3 laps and women would remain the same and do 3 laps. In addition, I am
hoping to have a little more prize money and some KOM primes. Any
suggestions or comments are welcome.
For the other race, I am thinking of doing something very laid back
and early on in the year. The date I have in mind is 28th of March,
weather permitting. The course would consist of 2 laps of about 10
miles each which are relatively flat and then finish with a 1 mile tough
climb. I am gearing this race towards the more experienced riders and
not offering one day license riders and cat 5's. What I would like to
do is limit the field to about 50 entries and let anybody who shows up:
cat 1 through 4, women, vets, juniors and masters ride in a single pack.
Entry fee will be low, I think about $5; there won't be any prizes, but
maybe a little food following the race. This is just a way to see
how your early season form is coming along. First, is anyone
interested, other than me, in racing that soon? Second, what do you
think of the format?
thanks for any replies and happy new year,
Peter

Dan,
if you don't have any luck selling them locally one of my friends just
used the service, bike-swap.com to sell a frame. it is a free classified

Everyone,
Don't forget the annual tradition of starting the year in the saddle with
our "Polar Bear" ride, 1pm on New Year's Day in the old Revco lot behind Ted's.
We usually do about a 10 mile parade, depending on who shows and the weather.

Does anyone want a set of yakima towers? I bought them used only to find out
that they are only for cars that have rain gutters. Oooooops!!
I would part with them and a set of cross beams for $50. Anyone interested
let me know. 748-1479
And if anybody has a set for a car without rain gutters, I'd be interested.

Cross' Nats. Big field,90 in the vets. The season of disappointment
continued. I had a good start. Then on lap one and a half I shifted to the
big ring for the pavement and it felt odd. I looked down and the chain was
drooping. So I jumped off to fix it and saw the rear derailleur hanging
there. It broke at the adjusting screws.(weird) I'd alredy come through the
pit so it would have been 3andhalf kilometers to run back to the pit. Day
over. It was a great course. Fast, steep drop ins, steep run ups and long
off cambers. Race day bought high20's with 30mph winds.
So that's the story. KF

TVC E groups Members,
The border between the U.S. and New Lisbon is open; no passport is
requiered. The only trouble you may run into is that the patrol men
only allow real bikes ( ie. ones made from steel ) across. The general
feeling I am sensing is that not many of you want to come; this is
understandable since it is an hour plus drive, but beware, the lack of
climbing the mountain passes of Otsego county will result in Nick Suozzo
and myself dropping the entire field on the first climb of the Singer
Race in April.
If the weather holds, is anyone up for a ride on Sunday the 3rd of
January? Does not really matter to me where we meet.
