Planning for State Bike Route 11 - Please respond by Tuesday, 12/7   Message List

If you have the New York State Bike Route 17 map and you look on the side of the map that shows the western half of BR 17, you'll see a NY State map in the lower left corner that shows the three existing Bike Routes (5, 9, and 17) and the four proposed Bike Routes (11, 19, 24, and one unidentified route).  Planning for Bike Route 11 has begun!  BR 11 will follow the US 11 corridor from the Pennsylvania border, through Broome County (New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Region 9), to Cortland, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties (Region 3), and on to the northeast corner of NY State through Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Clinton Counties (Region 7), ending at the Vermont border.  BR 11 will cross all three existing BRs.

Don Robertson (NYSDOT9 Senior Transportation Analyst) and I have scouted potential routes for BR 11 in Broome County.  Now we need your input to help with the final selection of the roads used for BR 11 through Broome County.  There is one portion of the route that is already selected - Whitney Point to the Cortland County line.  Region 3 will follow US 11 from Syracuse to the Broome County line, therefore, Region 9 will follow US 11 from Whitney Point to the Cortland County line.

Now for everything else.  The remaining Region 9 portion of BR 11 can be broken down into three sections, each with its own options (feel free to add your own option for each section):

PA border to Binghamton:

    - Start at PA Bike Route L (south of Damascus), follow CR 225 and BR 17
    - Follow US 11
    - Follow NY 7A and NY 7
    - Some combination of NY 7A/NY 7 and US 11 using CR 20 (near Broome Corporate Park) and/or CR 177 (Colesville Road Extension) to cross the Susquehanna           River when appropriate

Traversing Binghamton to US 11/NY 12 in Hinmans Corners (preceding choice impacts choice here):

    - Follow NY 7 (Conklin Avenue), cross at Tompkins Street, and follow US 11 (Court Street, Main Street, and Front Street)
    - Follow NY 7 (Conklin Avenue), cross at South Washington Street, and follow US 11 (Front Street)
    - Follow US 11 (Court Street, Main Street, and Front Street)

Hinmans Corners to Whitney Point:

    - Follow US 11
    - Follow NY 12 to Chenango Forks and NY 79 to Whitney Point

We'll be discussing the routing of BR 11 through Region 9/Broome County at the NYSDOT9 Bike/Ped Planning Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 8.  The plan is to finalize BR 11 routing so it can be included in the reprinting of the local bike route map (currently known as the Binghamton Metropolitan Bicycle Route Map), which is in process.  BR 11 will also be a topic at the BMTS Bike/Ped Advisory Committee meeting on Monday, December 13.

Please provide your thoughts/comments to me by Tuesday, December 7.  Give rationale for your selection (include advantages for your choice and disadvantages of the other choices).  Please remember this is a New York State Bicycle Route intended for, but not limited to, experienced touring cyclists.  Again, feel free to suggest alternatives to the options provided above.

Thank you.
