My core philosophy for this club....   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #619 of 747 |
So, I just applied for an Army National Guard grant that would get the team new jerseys, shorts, socks, field equipment, etc, etc.

Anyway, I had to answer a couple questions and I'm posting it below because we have not talked about this much this season....it is what I feel about this team, what I expect of you all, and essentially the core philosophy I operate from.

So...if you need to understand why we do what we do, how we do what we do, or what I expect from you....here is your answer.  Happy reading ;)

QUESTION - What outstanding attributes would you say the team represents?

ANSWER  - As an experienced player and coach, I have been around a lot of teams in my 15 years of rugby.  Last fall I started working with the Towson University Women's Rugby program.  In our short 5 months together, we brought the team from a couple/few wins per season to the 2nd seed in the Potomac Rugby Union and to the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Union playoffs.  This from a team that had never been to playoffs in it's on-and-off 15 year history.

While our players skills have improved over the last season and a half, it is their commitment to the game and heart they show on the field that made them a winning team.  And, it has been truly inspring at times. I have seen our players continue to play, battered and injured, with their heart and pride on the line. This team is committed to showing why they belong amongst the top teams in the country.

It is the heart that Towson University Women's Rugby shows, albeit in the game of rugby, that embodies the pride and will of an American soldier in battle.

QUESTION - Why would your team be good ambassadors for the National Guard?

ANSWER - Like the National Guard, we have a code of conduct that the players must abide by. Our core foundation is build upon the premise of "Commitment, Teamwork, Pride."

As their coach, I fully expect commitment from each player to advance their skills, commitment to training sessions, commitment to community (charitable) and fundraising activities, and commitment to the growth and success of Towson University Women's Rugby.

With commitment to the game and team, I then expect them to work and act as team on and off the field. In the game, we have one unit, with specialized parts, that must work together to win a match. In rugby, there cannot be individuals...a single person cannot win a game, TEAMWORK wins it.

Finally, with each individual committed to common goals and working as a team, they then embody the pride in their work, the team they play for, and their representation of the University.

In sum, it is our foundation of "Commitment, Teamwork, and Pride" represents the strength and core principles of the National Guard.

Additional Note - While Georgia and I strive to help these be the best times of your college years and the highlights of you rugby career (assuming you did or continue to play), we DO have a purpose.

We have the skill and ability to go to Nationals....and hopefully win it all while we're there.  As your coaches, Georgia and I do what we do to get you to that level.  Yes, we're gonna have a lot of good times, some bad ones, lot of sweat, some tears....but we're always looking towards getting on the field and kicking some *ss.

We love being your coaches,
Jeff and Georgia
