Is there just one set of planetarys in a rockwell
rear? What about the magnesium one's,are they alot
stronger?I have some people advertise them.Do you all know
what planetary wheel ends are compared to the inner
planetarys by the carrier.
Hi!
We use Mico breaks...
I have seen other
systems that work, too and might be cheaper. One guye
here put two Mercedes W123 front brake callipers on
his mod and it worked. Here in Europe we often have
to open our mind on how to make it different as
shipping, tax, custom and sometimes a freaky Dollar
exchange rate make US parts VERY expensive.
One last
statement on brakes: If you NEED tough brakes on your
truck, you'd better get those needle bearings behind the
spider gears. I will put pics into this photo album for
you, where you can see how it was done on out stair
step tractor.

As for frames, I really don't
like the wedge frames. I am so f... happy with out
Diekman chassis, I wouldn't want to trade it in for
Engler or Banter.
It doesn't hook up quick, but it is
not supposed to the way we run it. Brian managed to
make that chassis to transfer a lot of weight from the
seld pan to the trator, so our front end is rather
heavy ( which makes it hook up late .. depends on when
sled pan drops ). The nice thing about it is, that we
don't overpower our tires as we have to run a pretty
slow gear ratio ( to keep the motors on revs in the
end ) and the tractor goes down the track nice and
calm.
If we get the nose up an inch at 60feet we are
usually on a killer run.

The common thickness on
Chrome Moly tubes used in chassis is between 2 and 3
milimeters.. what ever that is in inch ( 25.4mm = 1 inch
).

CU

Sascha
I meant a truck salvage yard. You have to narrow
the Rockwell rear because the total width of the
truck cannot be more that 8 Feet. We bolted ours into
our frame most weld them solid I just wanted to have
everything removable. As far as frames I think Engler buids
them out of .083 chromolly. Sascha would know more
about chromolly frames. Engler frames are the nicest
looking frames but the trend in Twds is to go with the
Banter type wedge rail frame. Mine isnt a Banter but its
identical I just got the frame made myself. I dont know if
its been proven but I watched a Banter truck this
year and it would hook up quicker than the rest
including Englers ,the frame will flex about a foot side to
side with the torque of the motor some feel Englers
are to stiff. But the ATPA Champion runs an Engler
and the NTPA runs a Banter type so ???. If I was
building a mod I would go with Englers because I dont like
how they notch the top rail on the mods. As far as
brakes you want Mico from Minnesota I dont know the
exact # Banters sell them there used on trailers and I
think buses. I want to build a set of aluminum calipers
when I get the truck running Tim Engler also builds
his own. Hope it helps "Happy New Year to all".
if you are wanting to build a 2wd, i know where
there is a john deere log skidder with independant
brakes rear already to go it is currently under a 2wd
complete with a chevy 2500 series one piece flip up body,
jsut e-mail me HWaltstube2@...
Turbo2wd&Sascha-Do you all make your own brakes systems or do you purchase them
from someone, also have either of you ever dealed with Ralph Banter,I have heard
he is good?
Yale to me makes me think of Forklifts I am not
sure if they are the same company as Trojan. Trojan
made wheel loaders they used alot of 4-53 Detroits in
them. When I was looking for a set I looked at a
equipment wrecker who had a set out of a Trojan Loader they
were Rockwells but I moved on because he wanted
$3500.00 for a set. Looking back now I think the gears
wern't as wide as mine. Mine are PR-75s I think some
Case wheeloaders use them but mine came out of a
Timberjack log skidder. When I was looking I checked every
equipment dealer in the US and Canada and the best price is
from Tim Engler. I paid $1000.00 he went over them and
checked them all out and they were a very good set before
they were shipped to me , no wear at all. He'll make
you pins , hardened bushings and get you the bearings
for a price I opted to make mine , and as far as for
a 38 Rockwell $500.00 should get you one easily
Check truck wreckers and try to get a good one "and go
trough it totally" and figure out what ratio you want
the truck to be. Hope it helps
I'll be at Louisville from Monday to probably sat
night...

If you want to find me there, go to
Diekmans tractor and ask one of the family where to find
me. They should know.

BTW.. never heard of the
"yale" planetaries.. but that doesn't mean much as I am
located in germany

CU

Sascha
I have talked to one person that has a 38,000
rockwell with "yale/trojan" planetaries,he wants $1500 for
it ,is this worth the money or would I be better off
looking around? Are you guys going to the Farm Show in
Louisville?Tickets go on sale January 8 thru Ticketmaster.
Definately go with the Rockwell it is a good
setup you can get lots of ratios and parts its cheaper
in the long run. You won't find one that you don't
have to needle the cross. As far as planetaries some
use Clark Planetaries one person I know use a set
that come from a Road Crane that come already needled
with hardened pins. But he has been having a problem
with the gears wearing the sides of the case. No
hardened washers besides the gear. The best setup in my
opinion is a Rockwell rear and either the Rockwell or
Franklin Planetaries the Franklins have alot of machining
that you have to do on the housing to fit inside the
wheel. Hope it helps
Get the Rockwell... lots of different ratios
avaliable and it is pooven stuff. Nothing worse than
fooling around with new stuff all over the tractor. What
you can buy in "prooven" working shape should be
bought. There is enough other stuff that will keep you
busy.

CU

Sascha
I have another for you all ,are skidder rearends
needle bearing too?How well do they work in a TWD?Where
would be a good place to look for one?Would I be better
off going with rockwell 38,000? Thanks
