Hey gang,

The event last weekend in Atlantic city went well despite it also
being the Memorial day weekend. Thursday I hosted a firsttime ever
Liondance workshop! I had a great group of kids participating. They
got to see the lionhead up close, bang on the drum, gong and cymbals
as well as have their pictures taken with the gear. Unfortunately
they had too much fun it seems when the hotel staff advised us that
we were too loud and not to play the intruments anymore. We settled
for muffling the drum with some jackets. For the dinner banquet dance
we had a few new elements to the team when we lost our "Tail" dancer
Eric, a week or two earliar when he decided to relocate permanantly
back to California. Our Flagman Shannon stepped up in his stead.
Fortunately Shannon has danced as the tail before some years ago and
didn't take long to learn the new routine. We also had the much
needed new additon of Carol on cymbals who performed wonderfully on
very short notice for a very big event. I hope to have some pics up
very soon.

  Cheers!

  Mel

Hey gang!

I hope everyone got the chance to participate in World TaiChi Day
celebrations in your local area! Its celebrated on the last Saturday
of April and this year was the 10 year anniversary. The turnout in
Willingboro NJ was noticeably smaller than previous years, perhaps
due to not hhaving a celebration last year at this location as well
as some conflicts with another organization trying to take over the
timeslot on that same date. I was made aware of this problem later.
But anyway despite it all we managed to pull off another great
performance to a very appreciative audience. We opened the event
with our standard Liondance routine but we now have two more years
of polish under our belts since we last appeared at this venue so
our improvements showed. ALso new this year was our demo routine
with TaiChi and wushu performances which also went over well though
we could have used more practice, we made good use of music and we
atleast had alot of energy. I hope to post pics in the very near
future.

  Cheers!

Thanks so much for the wonderful message! Coincidently
I was in Philly's Chinatown with my son and my
girlfriend and we also enjoyed NewYear's LionDancing
by a local Kungfu school. Blessed with usseasonalbly
warm temps, we followed the team around Chinatown for
about 3 hrs. We brought a mini Lionhead with ous to
show our support, though a few members looked at us as
if we were from Mars. *LOL* We then dined at the
famous Joy Tsin Lau restaurant. I had to work later on
that night so we hurried home so I could take a much
needed nap. I'll post pics very soon!

  Cheers!

Hey gang,

This past weekend the Marriott Hotel ballroom in Mt Laurel NJ was
the location of the NAFMA World Championships. Vying for the coveted
SuperBowl Styled Gold rings in martial arts events of Weapons forms,
Empty Handforms, Padded stick sparring and Open style point fighting
were teams from Canada, Puerto Rico and the USA. Teams from Germany,
Trinidad and Gyuana dropped out at the last minute with much
disapointment. The two day event commenced with a wonderful welcome
speech from Shannon Boggan, who inturn introduced the athletes from
the competing teams. From there came the ceremonial sword mat cutting
ceremony performed by Dr. John Lee of the International Traders
Group, which then cued the LionDance, performed by Bucks County
LionDance team that rounded out the opening festivities.

Not only were the Gold rings at stake in head to head competition
for individual athletes but the Team World Championship cup, which
would be won by the team with most points earned through the placings
of the athletes in their respective divisions and age cateogories at
the end of the competition. Team Canada demonstrated early on that
they would be the biggest threat to take home the World Championship
cup from last year's winner Team USA by bringing a very talented team
in impressive numbers. No event could be taken for granted by TeamUSA
when Team Canada would sometimes come in, cleanly sweep and win a
division and accumulate precious points. Representing TeamUSA were
members from our own group, Kent Roberts (Boys 13-14yrs Weapons-
silver, Handforms, Stick sparring-Bronze and Pointfighting) (Saboto
Trent Mens 35-over Handforms, Stick sparring-silver and point
fighting) and Ben Outlaw (Mens 35-over handforms, stickfighting-Gold
and pointfighting-Bronze)

When the last division was over and the final points were tallied
TeamUSA retained the WorldChampionship cup for one more year.
Following the Tournament was an evening of Dance music, pizza/light
fare and celebration of all of the athletes, coaches, parents and
friends. The next NAFMA World Championships will be held in 2009 in
Orlando Florida at Disney World!

  Cheers!

Hey Gang,

The location was the main field of MillCreek park in Willingboro NJ
which became the site of the first ever ITG KwanDao Challenge. Hosted
by Dr. John Lee of the International Traders Group, maker and
importer of fine martial arts bladed weaponry. As a "Thankyou" for
all of his loyal customers and friends. This was a free event to
spectate, compete, demonstrate and share good times. The contest was
to see who could best display their skill with the customed designed
and engraved kwandao which weighed a heafty 39.5 lbs. First prize was
the weapon itself! 2nd prize was the beautiful prototype modeled
Kwandao designed by John Lee which has yet to hit the market.

Things started out rocky with morning showers. It was feared the
event would be postponed for Sunday but gambled and hoped for the
best that the weather would subside and by 1pm we recieved the
greenlight to proceed. We had many firsts on Saturday with our newest
Dancer Nylah stepping in as our buddha leading our lion. We also
debuted our team sweatshirts with patches, our team flag and martial
arts family banner into our routine which all went over quite well!!
Despite the cold weather, an impressive number spectators not to
mention game competitors came out for the event. Teammember Kent
represented our group with an impressive Broadsword routine that he
has been working hard to perfect and his efforts paid off with a well
received performance. As a surprise last minute entry, our very own
team member Shannon Boggan brought home a prized Kwandao for his
efforts. This event went over so well that John Lee has decided to
host more events in 2008 with the idea of highlighting a different
weapon each time, tentatively first with Broadsword in May and
Spear/Staff in August! Exact dates are to be announced!

  Cheers!

Hi Avishay,

I hope you've been well! It's been way too long since
we've lasted contacted each other. You may have
learned of my recent shoulder surgery and I'm now
going through the long and frustrating recovery

Hidy Ho, Gang!

Just in, A first time ever KwanDao Competition will be held in
Willingboro NJ in the 08046 zip code on the field in Mill Creek Park
at 10:30AM. The event will commence with a Liondance and martial
arts demos. For those of you who are wondering what a KwanDao is.
Its that very large bladed Chinese weapon often seen on statues of a
red faced warrior (General Kwan) stroking his beard. General Kwan is
the patron saint of martial arts and of commerce. Many traditional
kungfu schools and Chinese restaurants have an alter devoted to
General Kwan for good luck. The competition is hosted by John Lee
and International Traders Group 8, the maker of fine custom sharp
swords and weapons and importer of other fine Chinese items. The
competition is free to enter and or spectate. Food and drink will be
available. This event is meant to be just a fun affair and a "Thank
you" to all of his great customers that helped make his bussiness a
huge success. This will be a forms (Kata) competition using the Kwan
Dao provided by the host which weighs a whopping 39lbs. Your routine
must contain atleast 10 spinning movements. The winner gets to keep
the said item which is a one of a kind custom made piece.

Hey gang,

Last Saturday was the MidAutumn Moon festival in Philly's Chinatown
hosted by AsiansAmericanUnited.org Attending this event has become a
tradition with my group. Big fun to trek down into Chinatown to see
the Liondances and Kungfu demos by Cheung's Hung Gar Kungfu academy.
We found out the date at the very last minute and quite by chance
while listening to the radio of the heavy traffic congestion in
Center city. For some reason we could not find info posted on the
internet ahead of time, we would have otherwise missed this years
event thinking it would be sometime nextweek as was last year. The
Kung fu demo began at 4pm concluding with a liondance parade through
Chinatown. I bought a tiny Chinese lion puppet at my favorite shop
and joined in on the parade along side the full sized kungfu lions.
Seems I was a hit with onlookers pointing at me and clapping. I even
did a mini show of my own as best as I could with my recovering
shoulder to the delight of a cute little toddler and his family that
waved me in closer to them. We ended our exhaustive evening with a
nice dinner at one of our favorite Chinese restaurants in town.

  Cheers!

  Mel

Thanks Dale,

Seems I had shoulder issues way before the big
incident in May, and the Dam broke so to speak. Your
formulas made the situation more tolerable. You can
beleive I'll be using it throughout my rehab.

Hey gang,

Just in! Just got off the phone with a rep from NAFMA Director Jose
Torres, requesting our Liondance team to perform this Sat 8/18/07. Its
supposed to be in the decorative waterfront area sometime between noon
and 2 pm. A martial arts demo is also scheduled by TeamTorres Karate
and most likely some of our own members.

  We'll see what happens.

Hey Gang!

Well its official! 5 out of 5 of our guys made the long trip to
Uniontown Pa the weekend of the 20th and competed our hearts out for
slots on the '07 TeamUSA and made it. Returning members were myself,
Saboto Trent and Ben Outlaw. New this year was my son Kent and good
friend Eric Pease. The program has changed from last year by
combining the team trials and the intial training camp into the same
weekend. We arrived Friday evening and battled early Saturday
morning and lasting throughout the day. If you made the cut, you
stayed on til Sunday for another team workout, team roster pics,
meeting and free brunch.

As returning members myself, Saboto and Ben had the luxury of
several chances to win spots on the team but the pressure was on
Eric and especially Kent who had a do or die situation with only one
shot in his sparring division. Team member candidates must place no
less than 3rd place or higher. The odds were against him for several
reasons. One was his infrequent oppritunity to prepare and that his
only division was not divided by rank but by age and as an
intermediate he would have to face more experienced and higher
ranking rivals. His matches were nail biters but when the dust
settled he took a well fought for 2nd place. Eric narrowly missed
placing in the top 3 in the Senior BB weapons division which I tied
1st in with rival Alan Chueng. Pressure was on Eric to do or die in
Handforms which he took 2nd with an impressive performance. Next up
was padded stick fighting. I was going in with a bye but the
breakdown had Saboto fighting Ben in the first round. I gave my Bye
to Saboto to face Ben instead since my slot was already won in
weapons. I've lost to Ben in our last two official matches but to my
surprise, I won this outing. It knocked Ben out of stickfighting but
we had no doubt that Ben would make it oup in his strongest event,
Point sparring. Atleast now Saboto's spot was secured. In the finals
of stickfighting I took another 1st place with Saboto in 2nd and
rival Tim Hartman in 3rd. As predicted, Ben took 1st in Point
sparring so we all came home winners.

  Cheers!

Hey gang,

We just got back from putting another great performance in the
books. Still far from flawless however. I see where we can tightenup
on a few things. Namely my drumming, a few adjustments on footwork
with the "buddha" Atleast the audience was very appreciative. We
dropped the "tail gag" but still got laughs when Kent as the
Lionhead, browsed the vender tables and played the crowd. Also, the
full shoulder stack got huge applause. Even the popper worked for us
for a change after failing in the last 2 performances. Today we
debuted our new gong stand that I slapped together yesterday from
ideas I learned from the Liondance team we trained with at the last
Zhang Sang Feng festival in the Pocanos 2 weeks ago. We got very
favorable results. The sound seems to resonate better now that
Claudia, our gong player, has a free hand. Today we also played with
a record 3 cymbal players! Featuring Saboto Trent, New member
Patricia Ramos and the long awaited return of Jim Rogan. Stephanie
Wascowitz opened the dance as the lionhead and we pulled a "switch"
for Kent to takeover for the portion that required the high lifts
with our new tail Eric Pease. It was a most gorgeous day to have the
festival, unfortunately the turnout was significantly less than what
was hoped for as compared to last year's capacity crowd. Perhaps the
date change had something to do with it when it was held in mid May
of 2006. Still it was fun to attend and I know I got alot out of the
workshop I attended and today's performance made the team THAT much
better.

  Cheers!

Hi Sifu Dale,

So good of you to join our humble little group! I'm
very intrigued with pursuing IronPalm and IronVest and
as you already know, I'm making preparations by
acquiring your Dit Da Jow, gathering materials and
attending your seminar in November in North Jersey.
Which by the way, I will begin posting notices about
here and at other martial arts webpages that I
frequent.

  Cheers!
