Hey gang,
Well I finally rented the movie and this one is a good film which I
personally got laugh out of but its pretty tough to recommend to most
others, especially if you really take martial arts to heart and are
thinned skinned because it seriously pokes fun at the
socalled "McDojo" phenomonon, The 5 tenets of TKD, Testing fees, the
overly competitive bully with anger issues in sparring class and
especially lackluster demos by mediocre artists and
board/brickbreaking as a measure of martial arts skill. If youre an
instructor you definately would not show this on Friday night film
night with the students. The instructor Fred Simmons rudely insults
pospects who decline signing his contract to join his school. The
language content is way too harsh with an "R" rating, and many of the
situations are inappropriate for young students such as the wife
cheating on Fred and he inturn starts scoping out the cute adult
females in his class to the point of sexual harassment. There is also
the scene where, Fred Simmons goes on a road trip with a few students
and a fellow blackbelt freind Mike, Later revealed to be a psycho,
(played by cowriter and director of the film in a small cameo, Jody
Hill) to a martial arts convention to see their favorite martial arts
movie/sports idol Chuck "The Truck" Wallace played by cowriter Ben
Best who is aloof and self centered at the autograph table, invites
the guys to his hotel room fan party later when he senses an
oppritunity to soak them for $10,000 for an appearance fee at their
association's next belt testing extravaganza. The arrival at the
hotel party reveal's Chuck Wallace's true nature as a corrupt beer
guzzling, womanizing, coke snorting, hard partier which is yet
another uncomfortable scene with a two young kids present at the
party. The scene turns around when a fight ensues at the party and
Simmon's students have to defend themselves, only then they earn the
respect atleast for the time being from Chuck "The Truck" Wallace.
The film would have definately been more warmly recieved had they
toned down the language and crude sexual inuendo. I read it was
supposed to be on the level of Napolean Dynamite but with an R
rating, using very little script, little to no professional actors.
The strongets performances are by the dark charators played by the
villian Ben Best and the psycho/friend Jody Hill. They did a good
job with the film in that way that but I'm not sure who their target
audience was supposed to be. I intend to own a copy for my private
collection as a lover of independant film but I would cringe as an
instructor at the thought of either students or parents of students
picking this film up from the shelf and having them scrutinizing me
in class the next day. *LOL* This film should be required viewing
for instructors who may begin to stray from the path and need
prodding to get back in line. This film is a good example of how NOT
to run a school or what kind of school to avoid joining.
" Five...Only five percent make it to blackbelt....one...only one
percent make it to 4th degree..He's (Fred) a 4th deg! ..I'm a 5th
