Hey Gang,
Last night's dinner and Liondance performance went over BIG! The
restaurant was packed and the audience was appreciative. We were set
to kick things things off at 6:30pm but was delayed to allow guests
to be seated. Fortunately we had no real time limits and more freedom
so it worked well in our favor. The mild weather was another blessing
considering it's still January. Well the LionDance team members are
getting to be "Pros" at this and the routine went off well. That is
until we saw the Restaurant manager walk over to the middle of the
floor with Chinese Cabbage and a red envelope! Everytime we perform,
a new element arises, different from the last! "Aww Snap!! It's Hong
Bao time! Our first! Somehow we didn't really expect it but should
have guessed it would come up. For the uninitiated "Hong Bao" is
the "Lucky Money" Children and unmarried young people during Chinese
NewYear are given, in red envleopes. It also is special to LionDance
performers for the "Getting/Eating the Greens" Ceremony as the
traditional way they recieve payment and in return the restaurant
gets it's luck in bussiness. Also the restaurant didn't make it easy
by simply putting the envelope in the lion's mouth but made it a
challenge for the lion by suspending it overhead and the lions have
to show there skill by Stacking their bodies to get it down. The team
however had a tough time with this part because we spent the least
amount of time practicing this and worried more about the overall
dancing. It took about 4 or 5 tries but they finally got it down.
Another "Snag" was during our own version of "Eating the Greens" when
our "Da Tou WaWa" Bighead, laid the greens down, the hidden confetti
shooter's seal was broken and made them useless, due to being dropped
too hard on the floor. The dancers being used to them failing did the
second option and threw the "Greens" instead. So it's back to the
drawing board on those two issues. I was pleasently surprised after
the performance and dinner was setting up that we were approached
with an inquiry to be hired to dance at another function sometime in
the next two weeks during the Newyears period. We'll see what
happens! This time we were able to excellant video footage and pics.
Pics will be posted very soon!
Cheers!
Mel
