I live in Leesburg and belong to Ida Lee myself but I haven't had a
problem getting a lane. What time do you normally go to try to swim?
The past two times I have gone after work, there has only been one
person in the lane and I always ask if I can share the lane with them.

Side note: The one thing that bothers me about sharing a lane is that
people stay on one side of a lane. I have a swimming backround and it
urks(sp?) me a bit when people do that. I would prefer go down one
side of the lane and comeback on the other side.

Ok, so I have signed up for my first triathlon and now I am a little
freaked out. I don't even know where to start to get myself together to
train for it.
I bike regularly (3-4 days a week)and run regularly (Ran the NY
Marathon on November) but the swim thing scares me a little.
I am trying to figure out where to swim while I train. I live near Ida
Lee, but frequently get frustrated when I go to swim there and have to
wait forever for a lane.
Does anyone have any suggestions for:
1) a good training program and
2) a place to swim near the Leesburg area?

Hello all-

I'm selling a set of HED 3C 700c (carbon rim tubulars). This is one of
the most versatile and fast pair of wheels you can have. I bought
these wheels last year and have used them in 6 races total.

There is nothing wrong with these wheels. I love them and they look
and feel fantastic on the bike. I have a handful of both new and used
tubular tires (Continental Sprinters and Competition) that I'd include
in the purchase of the wheels. I prefer to sell as a set rather than
separate. The cassette body is for Shimano.

Price: $1100 -- Retail is $1600 for a new set
Specs and Description: http://hedcycling.com/wheels/hed3carbon.php
Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/race-pace/sets/72157606609964966/

Tires included - $250 value:
3 Conti Sprinter - brand new
2 Conti Sprinter - currently glued on wheels and both new this year
3 used Conti Competition (good for spares)

Please email to bdehoust @ hotmail . com if interested.

I am in too!  I'll have the motorhome down by transition again if anyone is
looking for a place to stay or would like to have me transport their gear.

I have space for two, possibly three more people.  Kevin Kunkle, my
non-RAT teammate, and I are already reserved.  I am hoping this year will be
cheaper than last year, since gas was $4.25/gallon last year.

Let me know!

January 1, and although it was cold, it was beautiful-- I will be
out of the country, so cannot attend, but always look for an

My understanding is that Scott makes a special bike case to carry that
particular model of bike due to the seatport being fixed. I'm sure there are
certain cases that can accomodate. If it's a rather large size frame your
options will be limited.KK

show the seat post being removed to fit into the case.Does anyone have any first
had experience with using a bike case with a fixed post bike? Any
recommendations on local shops that might have a variety of cases to try out to
use with my bike to make sure it fits. The Thule case has been highly recommend
but I dont know of anywhere that carries it to try it out before spending the
$400.Thanks!Matt

Hello RATS!!

This Saturday, Jan 10, 2009, I am hosting my birthday party/Skyline ride.

A few months back, I moved out to Front Royal, and I haven't gotten on the drive
to ride yet, so I figured what better time than now, when the views are
unobstructed, and the traffic is light.

If anyone wants to join for the ride, we're meeting at 1pm at my house in Front
Royal... (email or call and ask for the directions), consolidating into as few
cars as possible, and heading to the drive, (about 7 miles away).

If you just want to come out for the party, it's at 6:30 at my house on the
mountain.  Food, drinks, wood stoves, and good company will all be provided.
Hope to see some RATS there!

Not in San Antonio, but the Austin tri crew probably has some suggestions. I
don't know names, but there are A LOT of triathletes in Austin. Google there
and maybe find suggestions for San Antonio via the Austin route.

Happy New Year Everyone,

My 58 year old father joined me for IMFL this year and caught the Tri
Bug.

We are planning to do the C'ville sprint together on fathers day.

He is in very good shape however has never done any formal swimming,
biking or running and would like to work with someone on techniques,
particularly in the area of swimming.

He is in San Antonio, TX and we have been unable to locate any
resources on the web.

I know it is a long shot but does anyone happen to know of any good Tri
resources in the San Antonio area?

Thanks!

Based on the email thread before Christmas, I may not be the only
who got a new Garmin 305 HRM & GPS watch.

First impressions are:  a bit bulky for my skinny writs, but not heavy; distance
& pace seem to be pretty accurate; fun to play with all the data; it takes about
a mile to get the heart rate to read accurately.

Also, the map they provide is very basic.  Does anyone know how to merge the GPS
data with a better map?  Like Google Maps?  .tcx file?

One more question (for now ;-), how do you get an alarm to sound if you go over
a pre-defined heart rate zone?

Happy New Year!

Steve

Just a quick note-- Chris and I did about 46 miles on Skyline today--
I don't think the temperatures got our of the mid 20's-- we were
dressed for the occasion, but got hot (and sweaty) on the uphills, and
chilled on the fast downhills. It was an absolutely gorgeous day,
visibility from the ridge was possibly at an all time high, crisp
(cold) temperatures, and dry road--although there was a lot of gravel
on the road.

We did start late, as someone -not Chris- forgot his shoes at home,
and we had to go back and get them...thankfully we were still on
Fairfax County Parkway, so we only had to go back about 8 miles...

Hoping everyone has a happy and healthy 2009-

I make cycling routes in Google Maps and then use a scriptlet I wrote to
convert the Google Maps page into a CRS/TCX file for import into the
Garmin. Not only do you then get the GPS line to follow on your bike,
but you get turn-by-turn directions with distance to next turn, name of
road , right/left/straight etc....

You can read how to use and download scriptlet here:

Subject: [Tri RATS] Garmin 305 Help?

Based on the email thread before Christmas, I may not be the only who got a
new Garmin 305 HRM & GPS watch.

First impressions are:  a bit bulky for my skinny writs, but not heavy;
distance & pace seem to be pretty accurate; fun to play with all the data;
it takes about a mile to get the heart rate to read accurately.

Also, the map they provide is very basic. Does anyone know how to merge the
GPS data with a better map? Like Google Maps? .tcx file?

One more question (for now ;-), how do you get an alarm to sound if you go
over a pre-defined heart rate zone?

Happy New Year!
Steve

Ps. For the google map thing go to the Garmin website - think they have a
help section there.
