Dan,

In addition to all the great recommendations already given, stop by a bike shop
in Arlington County and pick up - for free - an Arlington County Bike map. It
is online somewhere as well.

Use it to get from Alex through Arlington to DC, MD, Reston, McLean/Great Falls.
