I think that's a great idea. Another idea, to bring in more runners and
potential club members, is something we did at M-E a few years ago.
At the end of each school year we have our sign up meeting for fall sports. At
the modified (7th and 8th graders) meeting we had a small turnout. We told the
kids their job over the summer was for each of them to get one friend to sign
up. By September we had our biggest team ever. If people try to bring one friend
who may be afraid to run races for whatever reason, we could see numbers
increase dramatically. This early start time could help in that regard, also.

Hurray for the Tortoise Start!!
Race director Tom Hamlin coordinated an early start for 4 of us at this
week's January Freeze. We were very appreciative of the opportunity to get
out ahead of the group and finish while people are still there enjoying
coffee, snacks and conversation. Tom plans the early start as a regular part
of the series. If you want to get out ahead of the crowd, plan to be ready
to start at 9:30.
Tony Poole is also planning an early start for the Oktoberfast 10K. Let's
get a pack of Tortoises going!! I know there are runners that don't
participate in races because they feel embarrassed at being slow. Please
don't. Races are a lot of fun and a great way to measure how you are doing.
We all can be proud just to be out there.
My hats off to the race directors who treat us with as much respect as they
treat the winners.
Our thanks to Tom and Tony,
Karren Bee-Donohoe

Rain didn't keep the runners away. Record 77 finishers. Whoda thunk it.
Temperatures were mild (50). The club's 2 tents worked great. The
race was run in reverse direction on the big loop. Everyone seemed to
think it was better and safer. If you have comments. please send
them. Thanks to Ed Jenner, Sue Cain, Skip Hamlin, George Joseph and
especially Mike Zwick and Chuck Barney. Dan & I couldn't do it
without you.
