Attached is a message from John Lugbill at SportsBackers asking
us to
support the US Open Cycling event being held this Saturday,
April 7. The
event has not been well organized but is an incredibly
high-level event for
our area. The event will be televised on NBC. Will Frischkorn
of
Charlottesville, who some of you may know, will be riding for
the Slipstream
pro team. I hope you can attend.

U.S. Open Cycling

Late last week I was called by the executive producer of NBC
Sports, John
Miller and asked if we would help drum up support for the U.S.
Open Cycling
Championships. While there are significant financial issues for
NBC, they
are still airing the event for 2 1/2 hours on Saturday.

In response to his call and multiple others from NBC, I offered
our help for
this year. Here is a copy of an e-mail I'm sending around to the
Chamber,
Retail Merchants Association, etc. I hope you can join us in
promoting this
event.

Thanks,

Jon

The U.S. Open Cycling Championships is coming to Richmond this
Saturday,
April 7th and will have 2 ½ hours of national television
coverage on NBC.
For various reasons the promoter of the event has failed to get
much
support, but because of NBC Sports national support out of New
York this
event is going to happen after all.

The fact that the event is set to be broadcast nationally in a
two-and-half
hour tape-delay show on NBC Sports that afternoon has prompted
Sports
Backers to help the promoters, Red Five Racing, line up
volunteer support
and enthusiastic spectators.

By the way, this bike race starts in Williamsburg, goes through
Jamestown,
runs parallel to the Virginia Capital Trail and finishes here in
Richmond.
If shown well on television, this could be a huge tie in for the
Richmond
Region 2007 initiative.

As we are all interested in promoting our region's best
attributes and
contributing to our region's continued economic vitality please
help us by:

1. Attending the event yourself from 10:00 am until 12:30 pm at
8th and
Broad in front of the Library of Virginia.
2. Ask your staff and family to attend as well. Encourage them
to
bring
signs; hand drawn if need be promoting Richmond.
3. Send out an e-mail to your e-newsletter list encouraging
attendance
(see
attached)
4. Talk up this event to everyone you meet with this week.

Please let me know if you can help.

Thanks!

Jon
