Re: [trekybikes] Ideas for lowering weight on Y33?

One can easily save a 100g+ per tire if you research a little so 200g+ saving by swaping out tires and it won't cost you that much compared to other parts like XTR cranks. Wheelset is next like others have pointed out.  I assume you already have a digital scale, if not its the first thing you should purchase and weight most of your existing components to see where your baseline is and start from there.

I have a older Mavic CrossLand V-brake only wheelset that weight around 1,750g and feel's nice but one thing with Mavic hubs is their noise, its one of the loudest free hub you'll ever hear and that racheting sound with every rotating might drive you crazy if your not into rock'n roll wheels.  On rides with friends I have to tell them my hubs are not broken, its just that way and I thought I have a bad hub until my bike shop show me the CrossMax SL which is even louder!

One the plus side if you into bling bling factor, Mavic wheels not only let you show off your $800 purchase but also let everyone hear your coming 1/4 miles away ;-)

Hi all, I am trying to upgrade and drop a little weight on my '97 Y33.
The original catalog said it weighed 24.5 lbs stock and I would like to
able to get to that range. So far I have done the following:
Swapped the fork to a manitou Skareb (3.3lbs) from a ZZ1 bomber
(4.6lbs).
Just bought Easton Monkey light SL carbon bars which should be half the
weight of my titec hellbents.
I also am replacing the bontrager RE-1 pedals with some egg beater SL's.

In swapping out the fork alone I have gotten the weight to ~26.5 bs. I
dont even know if the original quoted weight of 24.5 lbs is accurate?
Everything else on the bike is stock- shock, brakes, drive train, stem,
seat and post, and rims (matrix swammi).

Is there anything else that I can do (at minimum cost) to drop some
more weight? I understand the wheelset was supposed to be fairly light
so I havent even thought about switching that out. Thanks for the help.
Mike

The most significant weight on a bike is in the wheels. Rotational weight directly effects how quickly you can get the wheels to accelerate and decelerate....

Bill, I've got a question regarding the wheels. From what I've read from researching say for example the forums on some of Mavic's rims and wheels offerings....

Now you did it, now I'm on my soap box. Here we go. First, based on your size, and riding terrain of choice, ultra light weight might not be a good thing for...

The light / cheap / strong trade-off is alive and well. However (and even taking Bill's dislike of Mavic into account) I have had good results with CrossRides....

I'll get on a soap box too. Proprietary wheelsets have their place on road bikes for two reasons. Firstly, you can't really get nicely aerodynamic wheels made...
