Re: new trek y33

Hello, I just found this forum today. I am the original owner of a
1996 Y-11. It has been a very good, very trouble free bike. I have
enjoyed it over the years. Between starting a family & other
obligations, some years the bike saw very few miles & some years
MANY, MANY miles... but I could never stay away too long. I was going
to buy a new bike, but instead decided to upgrade my Y-11...

1st stage includes new brakes (XT V-brakes, which in turn required new
levers & shifters: XT levers, & seperate XT 8-speed shifters), new
tires(Panaracer Cinders 26x2.1), new saddle all new cables & a new
fork.

I am still riding my original fork. It is a RockShox Quadra 21R (w/ a
now rock hard, elastomer stack). I just ordered an MX Comp 105mm w/
ETA. I was concerned about moving from the original 60mm fork to the
new fork's 105mm. I called Trek & spoke to their tech staff. They
said I should be fine w/ the 105mm, but it will change the bike's
geometry. It will slow down the steering & make it a little less
responsive. That actually sounded good to me, because I sometimes
thought it got a little nervous, especially @ higher speeds. Now that
I am heavier & older (w/ slower responses), a little smoother &
slower, might work even better for me. Trek also said that the
longer fork would be a longer lever & in turn put more pressure on the
Y's head. They thought the 105mm would be fine & perhaps even a
120mm, but would not recommend anything more radical. They have seen
cases where owners upgraded the forks to long travel & at the sametime
changed their riding styles to more freeride/big hit... the graphite
heads did NOT stand up well to both those extremes.

1) So r u running the 105mm or the 120mm MX Comp w/ ETA?

2) I have read very good things about that fork, how is it working for
u on your Y?

3) What fork were u running before?

4) My original headset (Dia-Compe "AHEADSET") is still tight & smooth,
so I am planning on keeping it for now. Did u swap out your headset
yet?

Regards, Joe
