Re: Front mech query

Have to add that I think that it should be very easy to find a
replacement - there are a lot of traditional down-swing/ bottom-swing
FDs on ebay, for example. I've just put the latest model XT
bottom-swing unit on my bike, as the old 8spd LX one just wouldn't
shift a 9spd chain utterly reliably. I think that just about all the
current Shimano models will all fit a 34.9mm "seat tube" with all the
shims removed, but of course you should check before buying. Likewise,
I think that all current models can be set up for top pull (not bottom
pull as the poster below has stated, which I'm pretty sure is not the
way the cable runs on your bike). Have a look at a picture of Shimano
FD-M761 (on their site) - this is what I have and it will definitely
work on your bike. I have the one for chainstay angle 66-69deg and I
have no idea whether this is the correct one - mine works perfectly.

was nearly impossible to find a replacement with the same bracket size
and bottom pull. I managed to find one from the Shimano Saint line
that actually worked nice. Its also a bit beefier so it would take
more of a beating, which is always a nice thing. Yeah, not all FDs
will work on the thing, best thing is to take it to the shop if you
can, and have your salesman find a match for you. Just a couple cents
worth.

Early Y22s (and 11/33's too) require a top swing, top pull 34.9 mech. Most Shimano mechs are now 34.9 and will come with reducers for smaller frames. You would...

Sorry! I meant conventional swing - getting me swings round the wrong way. Newer Y frames with the gap in the BB pivot mount need Top swing :-) ...
