Yup I had the same problem when I had to change mine out. And it was nearly
impossible to find a replacement with the same bracket size and bottom pull. I
managed to find one from the Shimano Saint line that actually worked nice. Its
also a bit beefier so it would take more of a beating, which is always a nice
thing. Yeah, not all FDs will work on the thing, best thing is to take it to
the shop if you can, and have your salesman find a match for you. Just a couple
cents worth.

I'm having trouble fitting my XT front mech to my Y22 - can anybody email me a close up photo of the front mech set up as I think I may have the wrong design...

Have to add that I think that it should be very easy to find a replacement - there are a lot of traditional down-swing/ bottom-swing FDs on ebay, for example....

Early Y22s (and 11/33's too) require a top swing, top pull 34.9 mech. Most Shimano mechs are now 34.9 and will come with reducers for smaller frames. You would...

Sorry! I meant conventional swing - getting me swings round the wrong way. Newer Y frames with the gap in the BB pivot mount need Top swing :-) ...
