Hi Kim,

I am not sure if this will work for you but my trainer taught me a trick that worked with our aged pony but it works on my mare too.  The pony is a handful when he does not want to do something and knows all the tricks but this worked with him.  She had us stand in the trailer and use a lounge line attached to the halter and passed down the far side of the horse, around the back legs (resting just above the hock) and back up to your hand.

So now you have the lead in one hand and the lounge line in the other and you will apply just a little bit of pressure to the lounge line and pull it taute against his hocks.  Start easy and apply a little bit more pressure each time you pull on the lead and ask him to walk on.  Depending on the horse you may get a better response from pull and release but also try steady pressure.  You will have to experiment.

Caveat:  The only reason I felt comfortable standing in the trailer doing this is that I knew he would not charge me in the trailer (I have a stock trailer).  You do not want to get trampled if he panics and leaps straight in when he feels that pressure on his back legs. you may also have to go with him or release the lounge line if he panics and backs up.  This can be tricky if you are not sure of your horse or your experience.  I have horses I trust completely so it was not that big a deal for us (my 14 yo daughter has now learned how to do this) and it works every time.

My 2 year old stud colt has been trailered 6-8 times and this last time
it took us over 2 hours to get him loaded. He had always been a little
hesitant but this time was really bad.

We were at a park trail riding and could not wait any longer to get
him. Finally some other riders were there and more or less helped us
push him right in. It was almost dark and we couldn't wait any longer.

We had tried everything-exercising him outside the trailer, put a buddy
in first, applying steady pressure and then releasing, etc. etc.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for us? We are going to feed him
this week in the trailer when we go grain the horses. We had grain
with us that day but it still didn't help.

Here are pix of Drop's Rose of Sharon's new baby boy, born early this am.  I am pretty positive he's silver, but will have him tested to be sure.   He is more brown than gray, and has light colored eyelashes.  There seems to be a narrow white streak down the center of his mane, but hard to tell if it's white or just shiny.   He belongs to my friend, but he's the baby of my Rajha.

When I retrain show/speed horses to the trail, I will just pony him
with my quiet gelding. That way they can get confidence without
worrying a rider. When they are quiet on the trail only then will I
put a confident rider (usually my daugher VBG) on him for several
weeks. Then its time for the owner to take over. Usually it takes a
few weeks to a month for this to work out. I also work extensively on
ground manners to gain the horses confindence too.

I had an Arabian mare w/ a similar problem from so much railwork.  If you have a calm trail horse you can ride him with it might help.  Even ponying him so he gets used to being out of the arena is a step.  As previously suggested just go slow to prevent and dangerous bad habits from developing.

So glad your taking your ring horse out in to the world.  Without the stimulation of new things we go stagnant.  Take it slow, and as someone mentioned, walking from the ground can accomplish much.  My Morgan mare was taught young, well before I could go mounted. We went  throughout the countryside, over and under whatever came up that we could safely navigate.  The only thing she never got really used to was being right next to semi trailers.  The same approach will work for older horses, take your que from the horse, only push as far as he's willing to be pushed.  start out in the ring where he's safe, and add a little more outside time while decreasing the inside the ring time.  If he gets scared, back up a step for a few days , then continue going forward again.  Good Luck.    Cheryl of WindWood

Is there a fence around the pasture that he can be ridden along for a little bit? If there's at least something there he's familiar with, he'll relax, then you can work him off the fenceline... circle into the pasture and such, get him moving off it, etc... Probably the more exposure he has to just going outside the ring, the better. Unless it gets to the point where he has dangerous reactions, even just walking (ground or saddle) to check things out for a few moments would do him good to get used to scenery. As my boss would say "Let his brain absorb that..." Honestly, he'll have to get over it sometime, and I imagine he'd be okay once he has exposure and could possibly work off a fenceline there. Also, bringing a pasture savvy horse buddy could help... I know with some horses, that can make the adjustment worse, but it's a thought.

Hi Debbie,

I am not sure if you are in PA or not but I know that PA and MD both have
disclosure laws than can quickly derail the sale of a house. There are
several questions you need to ask though: Did he know that you had horses and
were going to put them on that land? Would a reasonable person presume these
pieces of glass would be a danger to the horses (i.e. how big are they?),
other animals or people? And lastly, if he did know, can you prove it and are
you willing to fight him in court over it?

I buy and sell houses for a living and have had the strangest things happen
regarding disclosure. If, after answering these questions you feel like you
could win in a court of law...

   - - remember we are talking about a court of LAW not a court of JUSTICE, big
difference - -

(and you feel you want to go that route) go get a second opinion from a lawyer
who specializes in real estate.

Good luck

Anna

Some state have disclosure laws. Certain things that are wrong with a
property have to be made known to the buyer. Usually it's big items like bad
well or septic or whatever. You could go on the website for your state and
see what disclosure requirements there are. Jean

   Hi group,
I have not been here as I moved and have not been on computer. I would just
read the emails. But I have a problem. I moved my horse home from a stable and
my newly built home. The builder that sold me land and house was a friend, but
not a long time friend. Any way I moved in April and have my horse in just a
small sand paddock next to his run in barn that has been great. I put up the
electric fence and had a spot in front of that for him who is a three year
old.So I let him out and he was beyond happy. But I went to go and just walk
the area and pull some weeds and there was glass in one area then another
area. I have now picked out a bag of small different shapes and color glass.
My closing attorney for house said I can't do anything. Is this true? What can
I do?Builder said he doesn't know how it got there and it's not his problem. I
now see that I have it throughout the yard. I am a single person as I just
should have been more careful. But this guy has been trying to date me f or
some time with no success. He told me after I told him that I sit there all day
on weekends picking out glass,Good at least you are keeping busy and I know
where you are?" Please someone help. I cry over this situation and it's not
like I have money to legally do anything.

I have not been here as I moved and have not been on computer. I would just read the emails. But I have a problem. I moved my horse home from a stable and my newly built home. The builder that sold me land and house was a friend, but not a long time friend. Any way I moved in April and have my horse in just a small sand paddock next to his run in barn that has been great. I put up the electric fence and had a spot in front of that for him who is a three year old.So I let him out and he was beyond happy. But I went to go and just walk the area and pull some weeds and there was glass in one area then another area. I have now picked out a bag of small different shapes and color glass. My closing attorney for house said I can't do anything. Is this true? What can I do?Builder said he doesn't know how it got there and it's not his problem. I now see that I have it throughout the yard. I am a single person as I just should have been more careful. But this guy has been trying to date me f or some time with no success. He told me after I told him that I sit there all day on weekends picking out glass,Good at least you are keeping busy and I know where you are?" Please someone help. I cry over this situation and it's not like I have money to legally do anything.
Debbie
