Re: [training-horses] Go Bitless

Dennis may have to be very careful about what he says about other's products.  My horses don't seem to mind a bit any more than they mind a saddle; it's just part of life.  You're right that the seat and legs, not the reins, are what signal your horse.  Jean

Subject: [training-horses] Go Bitless

Hey Guys

I just got home from the Dennnis Reis No Dust Tour in my home town of
Springfield. He was very entertaining. I am somewhat frustrated
though. I went down to talk to him during one of the breaks and
asked his opinion of Dr. Cooks bitless bridle. His response was
that I needed to buy his course and that the bitless bridle was more
or less a marketing scheme. He really didn't answer my question. He
is very accomplished in communicating his wishes to horses without
pain involved and I respect that a lot. I don't understand why he
didn't take my question more seriously and give me an answer as to
why he didn't recommend them. I would rather not have a bit in my
horses mouth if I don't have to. I am learning to control my horse
through my seat and legs vs my hands anyway. It seems to me that the
bitless bridle would be more humane if you screw up and get into the
horses mouth. I can't imagine a horse LIKING to have a bit in his
mouth and one would think they would be much more comfortable without
one. If they work off your seat and leg aids then what difference
does it make what you use on their head if all you want to do is
trail ride. I know you cannot use them in competitions. Which
doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but what do I know? What are
your opinions?

Thanks
Jan
