I agree with Bora (and 5000 others) that an E30 is more fun than
an E36. And the fun factor went up again with the race
suspension.
The question then becomes, "How much fun can you afford?"
and "How much reliability are you willing to trade off for it?"
Don't discount the E36 325, either. Reliable, less $$ than an M3
to repair.

I think an E30 325i fits what you want more than an E30 M3, I know Kirk Lachman sold his for less than 10K for sure and this was a fully prepped stock class...
