I have the Garmin 205 and have no problem with signal reception in the
towpath.

I used it for last year's marathon. It worked well. It was running a bit
slow, but it was consistent and never lost signal. I plan to use it again
this year.

For those who have raced and trained on the towpath, what have you
experienced with GPS reception? I train with a Garmin 305 and tend to
get inconsistent readings in wooded areas. I might run without it on
Sunday if it will be a bigger distraction than it's worth.

Run to Slow Aging Process

By MedHeadlines • Aug 13th, 2008 • Category: Elderly Care, Exercise, Headlines, Heart Disease, Lifestyle

The Stanford University School of Medicine has released the results of a long-term study that explores how a lifetime of running affects the aging process. The multitude of benefits derived from running have surprised even the research team.

In 1984, James Fries, MD, and his team of research colleagues enlisted 538 runners, all older than 50, and a similar group of nonrunners. Each year since then, the study participants have completed questionnaires about their personal lives, including their ability to groom, dress, and walk themselves as well as to their ease in getting up from a chair and gripping various objects. Their running patterns have been documented through the years as well.

When the study began, the runners averaged about four hours of run time each week. Twenty-one years into the study, run time has diminished to only 76 minutes per average week but the runners were still reaping the benefits of their active lifestyle nonetheless.

After 19 years of study, only 15% of the runners had died, from any cause, compared to 34% of the group of nonrunners. As was expected, the rate of death due to cardiovascular disease was much lower in the group of runners but the running group also had fewer deaths attributed to cancer, infection, and neurological disease, among others.

By the 21st year of the study, participants in both the running and nonrunning groups had started bearing signs of advanced age. They are now all in their 70s and 80s. What has proven to be quite remarkable is that the age of decline is dramatically later in the runners than in the nonrunners.

The onset of initial disability occurred 16 years later, on average, in the group of runners than in the group not running. Even more surprising is that, as age advances, the gap between the health of the runners versus the health of the nonrunners widens, in effect compressing the ill effects of old age into the shortest amount of time possible.

Indeed, it was Fries' theory of "compression of morbidity" that led to the study in the 1980s. At that time, critics of the new running craze said the exercise would lead to injuries of the knee and other joints that would cause osteoporosis and other crippling disabilities as age advanced.

Fries' thoughts were that a lifetime of regular exercise, such as running, would extend the runner's life while enhancing vitality and improving its quality at the same time. His extensive study has proven his hypothesis correct.

Fries is emeritus professor of medicine at Stanford's medical school and is the senior author of the paper describing his study of running. The Archives of Internal Medicine carries the full details in its August 11 issue.

The National Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases awarded grants for the Fries study.

what i'm thinking is the races are sanctioned by the USATF then they pretty much are required by rules to state that headphones are banned for insurance reasons.  when was the last time you were around mile 12 of a marathon when pretty much most runners are running their own race and saw one run right into another one because of headphones?! LOL  this rule is crazy.  if people try to blame it on safety that is absolutely bogus.  this rule is out there because there's some old timers on the board that makes these rules and are old school runners.  they can't except change....maybe they should of listened to dylan a little more "for the times they are a changin'"

This rule is all about lawyers and insurance companies. How many
accidents have you seen occur from a person running a 8 or 9 minute
mile pace in a marathon occur? I can understand if the runner is a
top finisher that headphones wouldn't be the best thing because of the
speed they are running, but for runner wearing headphones that finish
in the range of 4 hours...please!!!!!!! I am registered for the
Cleveland marathon in 2008 coming up here and I see they have banned
headphones from the race. I'm still wearing mine. This country is
supposed to be free. If this continues to happen more I will stop
registering for these races and just run as a bandit runner.

Thought this might be of interest to those that are running in the Cuyahoga Valley Park later this week. I also posted this on the OETOWPATH Group so some may get a cross posting.

Rabies vaccine bait to be dropped in Northeast Ohio

By Bob Downing/Beacon Journal staff writer

Starting Thursday, baits containing raccoon rabies vaccine will be distributed in Northeast Ohio.

About 367,000 oral vaccines will be released from low-flying planes and helicopters and by health department personnel in northern Summit County, northern Portage County, eastern Cuyahoga County and all of Lake and Geauga counties.

Summit and Portage communities to be baited to stop the spread of rabies in raccoons are north of the Ohio Turnpike. Also to be treated is the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

The distribution of the vaccine over the 1,121 square miles will continue through May 23 in a program involving the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ohio departments of health, natural resources and transportation.

Two types of bait will be used. Airplanes will drop a small plastic sachet, about the size of a ketchup packet. In urban areas, the vaccine will be inside a hard, brown, 2-by-2-inch, fish-meal block and will be distributed by vehicles on the ground.

Raccoons that eat the vaccine develop antibodies to rabies in two to three weeks and are protected from the disease if exposed to an infected raccoon. The vaccine is good for one year.

Rabies is a virus that attacks the nervous system, and once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal. If human exposure to a rabid animal is suspected, a series of shots can prevent the disease from developing.

Kristopher Weiss, a spokesman for the Ohio Health Department, said 19 rabid animals -- 10 raccoons and nine skunks -- were found in Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties in 2007. A year earlier, 10 rabid raccoons had been found in that area.

Ohio began fighting the spread of rabies, which came into the state from Pennsylvania, in 1997. Ohio has been part of a seven-state effort to keep rabies from spreading.

The spring vaccine baiting was started after raccoons tested positive for rabies in Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga counties in 2004 and 2005.

''The goal is very simple: to strengthen and maintain the immune barrier,'' Weiss said.

Most of the bait is expected to be eaten by animals within 72 hours. Residents in the area being baited are asked to keep dogs and cats inside or on leashes for several days after the drop.

Though pets may find and eat the bait packs, officials say it isn't harmful to them.

The state health department offers the following advice:

-- Instruct children to leave the bait alone.

-- If you find a bait pack, pick it up with a plastic bag, paper towel or rubber gloves. If intact, toss it into a ditch or wooded area. If it is partially eaten or damaged, place the bait in a plastic bag and dispose of it in the trash.

-- If you are exposed to the vaccine (a red liquid), thoroughly wash skin that comes in contact with it with soap and water.

-- Vaccinate pets for rabies, refrain from feeding animals outside because that attracts raccoons, and avoid contact with wild animals.

For more information, contact the Summit County Health Department at 330-926-5630 or the state rabies information line at 1-888-722-4371.
