I've run both the Towpath and Akron. They were very different, but very enjoyable. I thought Akron was a very good road marathon. Towpath, while really not a trail marathon, was sort of a hybrid between a road and trail. The course for Akron is harder due to hills, but my time for both was within a few minutes of each other.

I like the nature settings of the towpath trail too, and given the option
of Towpath vs. Akron (they have been only one week apart) I have elected
to run the towpath... But the running surface of crushed limestone has
less friction and I find it a bit harder for running at the same pace as
streets. Not the best surface for a PR :). It is best to include a
couple of long runs in the towpath to get used to the running surface.
