I know, I've ridden before I was just thinking of my non-riding spouse with
artificial knees. Thanks anyway.

Yeah..., You'll be doing real good if you can just
find a motel for that w/end, not to mention one with a
pool. I can't remember seeing any big names in the
area that may have indoor pools.

No...this w/end is all about the biking..., Vernon

You didn't say whether or not you cycle much at all, so it's difficult to know
how much information you need.

Basically, both you and your bike need to be ready. I like to have my bike
pretty thoroughly overhauled every other year. I do it myself if I'm not too
busy, but I'm not above paying guys I trust at my local bike shop if I'm short
on time and can afford it. You want to make sure you get everything forseeable
taken care of early enough in the season that everything is perfectly tweaked
and functioning flawlessly the last couple of weeks before the tour. You don't
want to get your bike back from the shop Thursday evening before the tour and
find something unsatisfactory when it's too late to do anything about it. A
squeak, rattle, shimmy that might be annoying on a twenty mile ride will have
you frothing at the mouth at the end of a hundred mile day. Everyone is supposed
to be capable and prepared to deal with minor repairs, but some things can't be
dealt with roadside unless you're pulling a trailer full of tools. Limping to a
rest stop with a bike on the verge of a catastrophic
meltdown or waiting for help by the side of the road are no fun.

You should be training in some fashion now. Do lots of cardio stuff. Weights
would be okay if your goal is endurance more so than muscle mass. If you have
access to rollers or a stationary resistance trainer for your bike, that would
be great. A spinning class would help a lot and is more likely to keep you
interested and not burnt out from the boredom of indoor training. Ride outside
when the weather permits. The tour comes early enough in the year that you have
to obsess a little to be truly ready for it. I will say that anyone who is
reasonably fit could probably complete this thing without much preparation. The
advice I'm giving you is so that you can do it and have it be fun, not an
ordeal. Also, you need to keep in mind that if the weather is bad (which is most
often the case)your level of fitness can make the difference between finishing
the ride strong and being forced to give up because you're unable to continue.
The more you train, the more likely you're going to enjoy the
ride no matter what the weather.

Take cycling-specific clothing, tools, gear. All of that stuff is designed the
way it is for a reason. It may look goofy and cost too much, but it won't seem
that way if you try to cut corners and it doesn't work out for you. Be prepared
to deal with both hot and cold, wet and dry conditions, regardless of the
forecast.

Traditionally, most accomodations are already booked. The area isn't exactly
much of a destination for most people, so the accomodations are pretty limited.
A couple of thousand visitors for one night each spring apparently hasn't been
enough of an incentive for the major hotel chains to start throwing up
full-service complexes.

I'm not sure who you are trying to reach but you have the
wrong address. I enjoyed your story though and good luck to
you. My husband also rides in this event.

You can tell your friends about me. I did this ride in the 80s and early 90s. I
fell in love wit it because it changed the way I thought about myself, and the
way others thought about me. When you find out that you can ride that far in one
weekend, you begin to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. I
kept going back because it's a good reminder, and great fun to be caught up in
an event that's bigger than just me. I got away from it in the mid 90s, when I
went back to school in an attempt at changing careers. Somewhere along the way I
picked up a liver disease that required a transplant. I'm guessing that I came
within a few months of dying. During the last six months of testing and
searching for donors (my cousin eventually donated a lobe of her liver) I was
pretty sick and was having to deal with the notion that there were a lot of
things in my life that I had maybe experienced for the last time. On the long
list of things that I regretted not doing enough was
cycling - specifically participating in TOSRV. I made up my mind that if I
recovered I wouldn't let life get in the way of doing the things I love any
more. The surgery was in December of '02, and I wasn't recovered enough to ride
the following spring. I did, however, ride short distances almost every day that
summer and spent most of the winter training in the gym. I was able to complete
TOSRV 2003 feeling strong and healthy. I referred to it as my Back From the Dead
Tour.

Tell your friends to ride TOSRV because they can...because some day they will
come to a point where they can't, and the regrets over neglected opportunities
can hurt worse than the debilitating physical problems. I wouldn't wish what I
have been through on anyone, but the perspective I've gained has been a fair
payoff. Take my word on this one.

Have em look at this montage from last year (attached jpeg).

05 will be my third year in a row (mailed in my registration yesterday).
It¹s a blast. The course is easy and fast, especially on Sunday. And if
the weather cooperates, it¹s one of the best non-competitive events out
there period.

What¹s not to love about riding with 3,000 other cycling enthusiasts! Plus,
it¹ll be a great story that they can share with their non-cycling friends,
³... hey, I rode 200 miles on a bike this past weekend. What did you do?²

Bill.

Friends of cycling:

I'm forwarding you a message sent out on the OSU Cycling Club listserv
yesterday by Club President Ben McCarthy.

Ben, on behalf of the OSU Cycling Club, is seeking support from the
bicycling community in Central Ohio.

If you have any ideas about how you or your organization might support
the OSU Cycling Club and their racing team, please sign on to the Yahoo
Groups forum listed in Ben's message or contact Ben directly at the
address in his message.

We have among us a number of cyclists and cycling clubs that race.
Perhaps the OSU team could benefit by training and practicing with all
you veterans. You might benefit, too.

A more successful and visible OSU racing team can only help bicycling
in Central Ohio. We all know what Lance's -- and Greg's -- success has
done to raise interest in cycling. A successful OSU racing team might
encourage local high schools to begin racing teams and racing leagues.
And if area high schools begin bicycle racing maybe -- just maybe --
bicycling might become more popular in high schools generally. And if
bicycling becomes more popular in high schools generally, maybe that
popularity will filter down to middle and elementary schools. And if we
can do that, we might get a whole new generation into making bicycling
a part of their everday lives.

Please do what you can to help the OSU Cycling Club.

Friends and Alumni of OSU Cycling,

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Ben McCarthy and I am
the 2004-2005 OSU Cycling Club President.

This year has seen an amazing amount of growth in the Cycling Club.
This year we have approximately 60 dues paying club members and
countless other active students. We are continuing the traditions set
by previous club members and expanding upon them. Last year the team
placed 4th in the MidWest Conference Road Racing and 11th at Collegiate
Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin. Our loaner bike program started three
years ago has grown from 3 bikes to a stable of around 8.
Additionally, there are a few new developments to be announced soon
that will make our club more competitive than ever.

I want to take this time and offer alumni and cyclists in the community
the opportunity to join together to be involved with the club in a new
way. Many of the top teams in the country owe much of their success to
the strong support they receive from their alumni. While we have made
a great deal of progress without such an organization, we could do even
better with one.

While I think that is would be best to leave the actual design and
mission of any association to the members, I would like to offer a
possible starting point.

The OSU Cycling Friends and Alumni are dedicated to promoting and
enhancing the Cycling Club at The Ohio State University by:
1. Involving alumni and cyclists in the community with The Ohio State
University Cycling Club
2. Serving as a resource for advice to the club
3. Providing support for the club that may include financial,
volunteer, etc.

I have started a group on yahoo groups that can be used as a forum for
establishing the Friends and Alumni Association. Currently anyone may
subscribe to this group by sending a message to OSUCyclingAlumni-
subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Some Cycling Alumni Associations around the country:
Colorado State University
Harvard
University of California, Berkley

MidWest Conference Alumni Associations:
Indiana University

I would like to thank Tom Johnson (Class of '66) who has helped me
envision what an alumni association could do for the club and who was
also the inspiration for starting this venture. Thanks Tom for your
continued support!

Thank you all for your time and support,
Ben McCarthy

To all Ohio bicyclists who want to make a difference for bicycling in
Ohio:

Our country's bicycle community comes together ever year at the
National Bike Summit.

The Summit is organized by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and
is supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) of the U.S.
Department of Transportation, the Bikes Belong Coalition (bike industry
and bike retailers), the Thunderhead Alliance (coalition of state,
regional, and local advocacy organizations), the National Bicycle
Dealers Association (NBDA), the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information
Center, the National Center for Bicycling and Walking (NCBW), the
Adventure Cycling Association, Interbike, the Association of Pedestrian
and Bicycle Professionals (apbp), the International Mountain Bicycling
Association (IMBA), and America Bikes (coalition of all major national
biking organizations to strengthen federal transportation bill).
Everybody will be there. Will you?

Since 2001, the Summit has brought together thousands of bicyclists;
industry leaders; transportation, health and environmental
professionals; and local, state and federal officials; all of whom are
concerned with the future of bicycling. Its relevance and success have
produced numerous educational, programming and policy success stories
at all levels of government.

The Summit fills three days in Washington, D.C. For a detailed schedule
go to the LAB website at:
http://www.bikeleague.org/events/summit05.html. The Summit is held at
the beautiful Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
just a mile down Pennsylvania Avenue from Capitol Hill. At every break
you can fill yourself up with wonderful juices, cookies, pastries, and
assorted snacks and finger food.

The first day of the Summit is devoted to a welcome from well-known
champions of bicycling and break-out sessions on all the cutting-edge
topics: routine accommodation/Complete Streets; Safe Routes to School;
Fair Share for Safety; federal funding programs like Transportation
Enhancements/CMAQ/STP/NHS/Interstate and Bridge Funds; Recreational
Trails Program; and on and on. There are so many great presentations
you will find yourself torn over which ones to go to and which ones to
miss. Many breakout sessions are presented by and for bicycle industry
people and bicycle dealers.

The second day is devoted to making the rounds of Capitol Hill to visit
all our Senators and House Members. We need to fill the offices of our
Congresspeople with bike dealers, bike club leaders, bike/ped planners,
bike trail builders, and just everyday bicyclists who show their
passion for bicycling to come to the Summit and tell their Senators and
House Members how important the bicycling provisions of the federal
transportation bill are here in Ohio.

The third day of the Summit wraps up with more invaluable breakout
sessions and the Congressional Bike Ride around historic Washington,
D.C. beginning at the steps of the Capitol.

Needless to say, there are countless opportunities to meet and get to
know bicycling "advocates" from all around the world, the country, and
Ohio at breakfasts, snack breaks, luncheons, dinners, and receptions
all overflowing with incredible food and drink.

If only a half dozen of us show up from Ohio again this year our
Congresspeople may begin to think that there aren't really enough of us
concerned enough about bicycling to worry about. Don't let that happen.
Make a difference. Go to the Summit.

Myself and others working with me will do everything we can do to help
you get to the Summit. Hawley is offering Summit scholarships to bike
dealers going to their first Summit. We can coordinate carpools,
homestays, shared hotel rooms. We will be there at the Summit to help
you enjoy all the presentations, luncheons, receptions, and to make
sure your voice is heard in the offices of our Senators and House
Members.

There will never be a more important and more exciting Summit. Be there.

Years ago on TOSRV, I made a pact with the two other guys I was riding with on
Friday night that we absolutely would not complain about anything on the ride;
headwinds, cold, heat, sore butts...NOTHING. The forecast was for pretty stinky
weather, and we were trying ti find a trick that might make thr agony we were
about to subject ourselves to a little more bearable. Instead of direct
complaints, we decided we could only complain in reverse, by wishing for more of
whatever it was that was bothering us. If it was the wind, we would say, "I wish
that the wind would shift just a few more degrees to the north, so that we could
really feel the full force of it..." or if it was hot, "If it was just five
degrees hotter, this would be perfect..." Getting creative about the complaint
sort of took our minds off what was actually bothering us. Okay, yeah, I
know...not really, but it was a nice try.

Cyclists:

Right now, even as we speak, bike racks are being installed on all COTA
buses by Sportworks. The installation will be completed -- or nearly
completed -- by September 22nd, which happens to be International Car
Free Day.

So, we are planning a big rollout event to introduce the bus bike racks
to the Central Ohio community, and especially the bicycling community.
Please save this date: Wednesday, September 22nd. And plan to attend
the event. Here are the details....

WHO: Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), Mid-Ohio Regional Planning
Commission (MORPC), Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition (COBAC),
City of Columbus, Franklin County, Columbus Outdoor Pursuits (COP),
Baer Wheels, The Ohio State University, and more.

WHAT: COTA bus bike rack rollout/ Car Free Day event: demonstrations of
buses with bike racks, proclamations and speeches by civic leaders,
exhibits by bike dealers and bike clubs and other organizations, FREE
WATER BOTTLES, TV and radio, and much, much more.

WHEN: Wednesday, September 22nd, International Car Free Day starting at
11:30 a.m. proclamations and speeches at 12:00 noon

WHERE: Ohio Statehouse at Broad and High Streets in Downtown Columbus

WHY: >The bicycling community (through the Columbus Bikeway Advisory
Committee) ASKED COTA to put bike racks on its buses.
             >Bike racks on buses is the first, major, concrete way that
bicycling is being made a part of the mainstream transportation system.
             >If we want to continue this progress and continue to
integrate bicycling into the transportation mainstream and to make
Central Ohio bicycling friendly we MUST show up at this event in large
numbers to show our gratitude, our interest, and our determination to
make this a success both for COTA and for the whole community.

HOW: Preferably on bike or on foot or by bus; but BE THERE!!! This is
for US!!!

Important Note: As part of this rollout event COTA will be offering,
beginning on September 22nd or as soon thereafter as the bus bike racks
are installed on the entire COTA bus fleet, a week of free bus rides to
anyone who puts a bike in a bus bike rack and rides the bus. This is
being made possible by Columbus Outdoor Pursuits through a generous
donation from its Bike Development Fund, which is created by the
participation of the bicycling community in COP's major bicycle events.
Everyone who does a "Bike and Bus" will ride the bus for free during
the free rides week. Try it and see how EASY it is.

Stay tuned for more details. And check out the official Car Free Day
website at:

http://www.carfreedaycolumbus.org/CarFreeDay.ht

MORPC has produced a poster for the event. If any bike dealer or club
in Central Ohio would like a poster to promote the event, please email
me or call me.

Training to ride my 1st TOSRV a few years back rekindled my love for
cycling. Reading Lance Armstrong's book only added fuel to the fire.
Now I feel I am a dedicated cyclist. I ride when I can and think
about it when I can't. Thanks COP and TOSRV!

During the times when I not riding one of the things that has
consumed a great amount of my time has been helping my father deal
with stage IV colon cancer, a nearly always fatal advancement of the
diease. So in order to combine my love for the sport, my love for my
dad and to honor the achivement of Lance and the millions of others
battling to survive cancer I have started a cycling tour, the Ride to
Survive (www.ride2survive.org), to raise money for the Lance
Armstrong Foundation (www.laf.org) Last year was our first year and
we were able to raise $2,500 for cancer reseach. This year we hope to
double that number. I am asking you to please consider jioing us on
July 10th to help fight cancer.

Thanks

A great idea - somebody should have suggested this months ago. Oh wait, I
did...

Charlie decides is good enough for me. For any of you that haven't
read "The Mighty TOSRV", a historic recollection of the tour,
Charlie's first tour ended in dislocated fingers after a state
trooper opened his car door right into Charlie. Not only did Charlie
recover, he rallied and became tour director afterwards. Never
underestimate perserverance and determination.

Good work Charlie, my only reservation is that I may have to look at
the map for the first time in 20yrs!!!

Best to all,

Why? Are some cyclists "overly ambiguous" (ambitious?) and getting
in extra miles? Doing hills twice? Maybe looking for others in
their group? Who knows. The point is that there will always be
some opposing traffic, including motorcycles, even other bikes, that
have nothing to do with TOSRV. It would be ideal if there weren't,
but it ain't gonna happen.

Drivers should be more aware of all conditions before they go to
pass, but they aren't. "Bike riders own the streets" - not true,
but we act like it. Riders should "share the road", too, and
realize we need to make it easier for cars to pass. Groups should
be limited to maybe 10 bikes long and two wide. You always see
bikes 3 or 4 abreast, which makes it more difficult for a driver to
see an oncoming bike or even a car. Providing space between groups
allows cars to pass the smaller group safely and get back in if
necessary.

So, yeah, I'm all for using common sense, including avoiding riding
in the opposite direction if not necessary. Think about what a
driver must feel trying to drive down 104 with bikes all over the
road. Let's help them get past and not frustrate them any more than
we have to.

NEWS FLASH FOR ALL TOSRV RIDERS FROM TOUR DIRECTOR CHARLIE PACE:

Due to increasing concerns about the trucks on SR 104 from Columbus to
Circleville we are anticipating a new route in that area for TOSRV -
the first change since 1962. The new route will go south on High
Street from Cap Square to the first road south of SR 104 to Deming
Ave. Then to Lockbourne and on south to Circleville. Bob Allen and
Steve Barbour checked out the new route and we were very pleased with
what they found. We think you will be too.

We hope you all will return for TOSRV 2005 to try the new route!

Common Sense!

I love to ride TOSVR. This year, mothers day was also was my
Birthday. I enjoy the challenge to get ready to the ride, amidst the
unpredictable weather in Ohio in the month before the ride. But rain
or shines, I always have a great time – and 200+ miles in one
weekend.

Over the past years traffic has increased and I would like to appeal
to the common sense of my fellow bike riders.

Why is it necessary to ride the route in the opposite direction? I
saw many times that passing cars swirled in close to riders, because
the saw the opposing riders late. At least for two days in a year the
bike riders own the streets, except some overly ambiguous riders must
endanger fellow riders.

So please, let's all ride in the same direction for two days!

Thanks Vern, that was/is the point I was making: personal choices
with personal accountability/responsibility...As you know, Ohio does
NOT have a helmet policy for motorcycles, repealed about 15yrs ago.
One person who testified against the helmet law was a parapalegic
former biker who would have died had the helmet not "saved" his life
when he crashed. Instead of being killed, he suffers from life-long
paralysis and dreams of death. So indeed, the cost to the individual
and society is a dual edged sword.
