I rode with you for a short time, from where Marie the Wheaties lady
just broke her thumb at the Rushtown RR tracks, to Waverly, where you
decided to keep your "styling rain jacket" on for at least the next
leg of the ride. Very fashionable and smart..........take care, see
you next year, tony

I want to thank all the TOSRV veterans for watching out for me as I
rode my first TOSRV, first Century & first overnight with you this
year. I traveled alone from Louisville KY and I had a good time. I
want to thank all the men & women who encouraged me to pedal, pedal,
pedal despite the conditions. Also the women who accompanied me to
dinner on Saturday night, advice me to start a ride journal, guided
me to the Donut shop, and shared their stories previous TOSRV rides.
A special thank you to Marie Bartoletti who showed true spirit while
suffering with a broken thumb as she encouraged me on the ride back
to Columbus on Sunday. I can not begin to tell you how honored I
felt to be accompanied by the Wheaties Energy Crunch Everyday
Champion.
Thank you ALL for the very well supported ride. I will back next year
to experience the ride in good weather!

Hi all:
Did my 19th TOSRV Ohio this year. I now live in Portland Oregon,
since 97, moved right after TOSRV97.
So this year decided to do TOSRV West, put on by Greg Siple's
Adventure Cycling in Missoula,Montana. Greg is the cofounder of TOSRV
Ohio with his dad in 1962.
TOSRV WEST 2003, now in its 33rd yr. left Missoula for Bigfork, 130
miles north. (Other option was a 100 mile ride, starting in Potomac,
30 miles N of Missoula)
So, I picked the 130 route, looked good on paper anyways!!! Sat.
start was 31 degrees, fell to 28 at the 1st food stop. They had a
campfire that helped! Saw Charlie Pace, TOSRV Ohio tour director
there. Always good to see him. Anyway, finally warmed up enough
around 5:30pm to start raining/sleet about 5 miles before I finished.
So I was soaked. Thankfully, I stayed at Marina Cay Resort, right
across the street from the school dinner that was really good. And
the resort had a bar, so I was feeling good in short order. Many
folks actually CAMPED OUTSIDE the school for the night. I would
ponder that they are from Montana...
Sunday started out at 31 degrees, and while there was snow, it quit
and we avoided rain. We had a tail/side wind from mile 45-88, similar
to Sunday on Ohio TOSRV, but not the intensity. But turning East, at
mile 89 till the finish, was a bear of a headwind. I was going
DOWNHILL between a canyon and the Blackfoot River, and had to gear
down to keep my pace!! And since there are only 350 people who do
this ride, with only a handfull doing the full 260 route, you have to
use your map, which I screwed up and finished the ride by taking the
freeway to the exit nearest the finish.
It is a great ride, gorgeous country, mountains on both sides. I had
the road to myself many times. It is near Glacier Natl. Park, where
grizzlies, cougars and such wildlife lives. Weird to think anyone of
them may be watching us going by. I saw many deer and a few coyote
carcasses off the road.
The 580 mile drive back to Portland was beautiful, and 80mph all the
way home, no traffic to speak of!!!
To all the above, TOSRV Ohio is still my favorite, you just can't
replace perfection, "America's touring classic".................tk
I thought the breakfast stop both days was lacking compared to previous
years.....also, the "new" stop (the farm) was convenient, but they need to
do something about the MUD!!

I took a photo of Dave, his daughter Chelsea, and his mom (#693).
They were wearing green shirts during TOSRV. I'm sure they would
like a copy of my photo. Dave lives southeast of Columbus about 20
miles.
If anyone knows how to get in touch with them, I'd appreciate it.
Please check out the photos. I have a folder, and there is one other
folder for this year's tour. Some nice memories reside therein !
Brad Bolton, 1967-71, 2003
My first ride, evidently I got broke in on a good TOSRV, from a
weather standpoint. For my 125 mile travel from home to downtown
Columbus and onto Portsmouth, I learned a lot on the ride. For
example, I brought way more equipment than I needed. I could have
rebuilt my ride twice over, multi wrenches, three tubes, 1 tire, and
more water than I needed, way more tools than I needed. I also
really expected fewer convenience marts for water, snacks, and
Gatorade along the way. Next year I will travel much lighter,
smarter, and more comfortably, greater ease, greater avg. speed. On
return, the bike was torn down and got new grease and a thorough
cleaning and lubrication.
At the finish, I was rather tired from fighting the elements all the
way down, but the hotdogs and soda hit the spot with me, all six
dogs, the best hotdogs I have ever had. The music was excellent for
me also. Unfortunately, I was not able to stay over night due to
other commitments on Sunday, but will definitely make the trip next
year, probably only one way again.
It was a fantastic experience and goes down as a personal
accomplishment for me. Though I have done other centuries in a day,
in much better weather, this event had a special meaning for me and
will never be forgotten. I look forward to other organized rides in
my area of Central, Ohio.
It was fun.
To Kim and Chris and all,
As this writer said, we had never done, only heard
about the ride for years and finally we tried, and
COMPLETED it, in all the weather-related hazards. We
had a 3 day old tire cut through, but no flat,
replaced at the hotel in the AM after I found it Sat
nite on my bike. The avoidance of a flat/break-down
was really appreciated as was the next stop at about
10 mi. out after my husband fell into the crack on the
steeply diagonal wet RR tracks. He was tended to minor
scrapes immediately by 2 very nice young women in the
squad who had him patched up in no time (they said
"you don't need to feel bad, you are #26 rider to fall
on this track this morning so far"). (Maybe we could
have had that RR xxing marshalled by someone to stop
all riders in the wet and make them walk it.)
The bent rim wheel on front was promptly replaced by
another repair support van at about the 10 mi mark,
since riding in with one brake disconnected wasn't
very nice a prospect for my spouse. I also had a bolt
give out, breaking off the support pad on my aero bar,
forcing me to use my sore hands all day. Better in the
cross-winds later, as it turned out. We are well and
truly hooked on TOSRV, and put our name on the hotel
waiting list too.
Thank you ALL for the great ride, and lots of war
stories to share at the bike club meeting tomorrow
nite.

Does anyone have any photos they can post of the horrible
weather conditions on the first day? I neglected to take any

Randy,
Congratulations on finishing the Tour. It is good to talk to
so many veterans out there on TOSRV.
I have completed 26 Tours, with my first one being in 1972. I have ridden in
every type of weather condition on TOSRV except a hurricane. All you can do
is grind it out knowing that your conditioning will get you through it.
I am very content and happy working the tour these days. You may have seen me
at the Chillicothe lunch stop and at the park in Portsmouth where the lines
behind my repair van were longer at times than the portable johns. Broken
spokes and tire/tube replacements were an all time high with countless hub
and crank overhauls running a close second.
See you all next year and thanks for having me on TOSRV.

Mr. House,
Anyone with 29 TOSRV's deserves to be called Mister.
Congratulation and I hope to see you when I'm doing my 29th. That will only be
in another 13 more years. I'll bet yours are also consecutive and complete,
too? I'd love to hear more wisdom from those that have truly been there and
done that.
Two things that I saw this year suprised me: one was the old canal locks. I
saw two of them and wondered why I had not seen them the previous 30 times I
rode past them. The other was the TOSRV volunteer standing on top of the
railroad bridge that we cross under. He had a birds eye view and was
communicating with the other volunteers so that head on collisions were avoided.
I thank him for his worthy contribution to the tour.
On a down side, who scheduled a "rice-burner" cruise-in on the same day and the
same route as the Mighty 'TOS? I may remember this 'TOS not for the cross
winds, but for the high volume of traffic. They were a patient group, for the
most part, but an increased risk, never the less.
To answer your question, I have no clue why we (that includes me) left early.
Guess I was worried about getting a good spot on the gym floor, but that's at
least one of my traditions and I doubt that I'll change.
See you next year,
Randy

WHY DO YOU ALL START SO EARLY????
On Saturday we departed around 9 AM from Columbus. We got a little rain
around the BP gas station and it sprinkled on us one other time. The road
was still wet all day but I do not know anything about pouring rain. On
Sunday leaving around 9:30 gave us a great tail wind about 85 % of the time
then we had a side back bush for the other 15 %. This was the best total
TOS temperature I can ever remember!
Of course it is only my 29th one.
Oh and for the mile guy - this year I had a lot of miles in prior to the
start. Last week I did around 8 miles then a few days later I had my big
ride of the year 22 miles. So I got to triple my miles on Saturday! I only
had two years that I first got on the bike for the first time at the start
of TOS - wow was my butt in bad shape both of those years on Sunday.

Kim, good day.
Our crew from Cincinnati (numbers 242-244) had a blast!
The ride down to Portsmouth in the pouring rain was part of the challenge.
At one point we were in a peloton of 20+ other cyclists for 20 miles, each
taking a turn at the front pulling 'the train,' averaging 22-23 mph!!
Great
tempo! We met some fantastic cyclists.
Camping was fun. The showers were awesome. Hot water! The rain and high
winds that greeted us Sunday morning was exciting! As soon as it let up we
broke camp and headed north to Columbus.
Of course we had rain to start things off; but soon it turned to glorious
sunshine. But what is this? Wind? Not just any wind - but 30-40 mph
cross-winds that challenged every bit of our bike control!
If it wasn't one obstacle - it was another.
It was our first TOSRV. It will not be our last. We enjoyed every bit of
it.
Thanks for providing us with a thrill of a ride.

Chris, good afternoon kind sir,
Kind words indeed. I thought the obstacles (heavy rain and high winds) were
challenging and will be talked about for years to come. I had never done the

Although we never had a need for your service - it was comforting to know we

Dear TOSRV Riders,
Thank you so much for all your support, business, and
tremendous patience along the TOSRV route this weekend. You folks made this
the best Tour for me and my shop. Your patronage and kind words were greatly
appreciated. I met many nice people and not only made many new friends but
had the chance to renew many old acquaintances along the course.
You may have seen me mostly at the Chillicothe lunch stop both days and at
the park in Portsmouth Saturday afternoon and evening, although I did help
many stranded riders along the route. I was in the silver Ford Winstar van
with shop markings on the doors and 2 Felt Road Bikes on the roof.
I don't beleive I have changed so many tires and tubes in one day as I did
Saturday. Sunday was nearly the same. Also, I don't know that I have ever
rebuilt as many hubs and cranks on the road as I did this weekend. That
gritty water, mud, and worms just got into everything and caused no end of
mechanical problems. But, I think I was able to get everybody back on the
road with a minimal wait, despite the numerous problems.
A veteran of 26 complete TOSRV's myself, riding my first in 1972, and missing
only the '82, '83, and '84 TOSRV's as well as the last 3 Tours, I can
truthfully tell you folks that I felt your pain this weekend, especially
Saturday. During all my TOSRV's I have ridden in every weather condition
possible including hail stones, snow, flash floods (where water came up to my
hubs in Waverly) and even a tornado. So, when I say I know what you went
through on the road Saturday, I truly do know.
Now, I am content and enjoying emensely doing the mechanical support for the
Tour and I am looking forward to next year. Thank you again for all your
business and support and for having me be a part of TOSRV.
Many Thanks go to your TOSRV director, Kim Bauer, for all her efforts making
such a successful TOSRV. And, a Very Special Thank You goes out to Charlie
Pace who introduced me to TOSRV in 1971. I wouldn't have been a part of TOSRV
all these years if it were not for him.
See you all next year.
Thanks for a great TOSRV
Sincerely,
Chris Manack

You did some serious milage ..1500 .... 500 this year ..... I think I did maybe
250 miles this year before ...on top of 20 yrs of cycling every year

roughly 500 miles including 3 centuries this years. Best thing to keep mind is
go your own pace, eat before your are hungry, drink before you are thirsty and
keep some anti-inflamatories in your pocket (just in case) Rich

800 miles was pretty impressive ............ 460 was good ...how did you do?
jilljusjar <fosterj@...> wrote:2002 was my first TOSRV. I cycled about 800
miles before that
trip. This year I only have about 460 miles in -- with an 85 miler
being my longest yet. The best advice a friend gave me last year
was to go at my own pace. A lot of people passed me, and I was
tempted to try to keep up with them. However, I kept up my moderate
pace, made it to Portsmouth by about 3:45 and was still able to walk
at the end (!) -- and was able to make the return trip on Sunday.
Best wishes!

Kim,
The stop in Circleville at the farm was not too biker friendly ...... the people
were great ..... it was very hard on the bikes with the fine dirt getting into
moving parts. The ride as always was rainy, windy, sunny ........ a Spring ride!

I've probably ridden 200 miles this Spring, including one
35 mile day and one 40 mile day (not consecutive!).
Of course, I am signed up for the 1/2 option.
50 miles isn't a lot.
Hi call brad 614-771-9098 before 3pm today friday if you would like
to have my room. This is only for 2003. please no calls after 3pm, I
would have already canceled...
Now that is the best response I have seen. Rich
