Did that guy ride TOSRV, both ways before noon Saturday? Article states what,

the next state......sure hope he makes it, that is a great goal anyways! Did the
article have a route he was taking, I sure didn't see one.

Bike paths aren't safe either:
Local (Xenia) radio is reporting a guy on a recumbent was hit by a quad-runner
on the multi-use path south of here (yesterday?). 3 taken to hospital (Quad
runner had 2 on board). Driver of quad runner will be charged: no motor vehicles
are allowed on path except emergency/ official vehicles.
Be careful out there!

Yeah, I thought the website was down! Look at the website to see if the tour
report has been posted and here and it has been quieter than Portsmouth on
Sunday night!

Anyone up for a TOSRV Fall ride? Maybe do it backwards, from Portsmouth to
Columbus and back...............of course the party at Tracy Park before hand
may not be conducive to riding to Columbus....

LOL...."disappear" is apt! "TOSRV withdrawal" is what I've been calling
it.....getting all trained up, then driving to OH, then doing the ride, then
driving back (with a great sense of accomplishment). But, now what??!!
OK...let's here it for TOSRV10? When does registration open? ;-)

Richard, The Ohio to Erie trail has been planned and under construction for
several years. Half or more of it is complete. As far as TOSRV is concerned,
doing it all on a bike path would be a really boring ride. The bike path is
nearly complete from Columbus to Cincinnati so another one along the Scioto
River wouldn't be very useful. I like riding the bike paths around home but like
the rides such as GOBA and XOBA because there is safety in numbers on the roads.

Ohio is actually very lucky in established "rails to trails" bike paths. Ohio
was an early adopter of RR's, indeed, the old B&O RR was the first incorporated
RR in the USA. Due to the interstate hwy system and St. Lawrence Seaway
completed in the 50s, combined with heavy Federal and Union Regulations, all
combined to make almost all RRs unprofitable in Ohio and most of the Eastern
USA. Hence, many choice right-of-way level graded former RR paths were available
for next to nothing. (on a side note, many right-of-ways were supposed to revert
back to the original owners at the end of RR use, to which much consternation
was brought about to the potential return owners)...but I
digress...........anyway, I know all of this as I am into RR history and worked
for the RR for a while. Nowadays, the RR's aint giving nothing away. There are
but 4 big ones (class 1) left, and they have Congress and the current admn. in
their hip pocket, corporate welfare has never been greater and they are using it
to their advantage. It is no mistake Amtrak travels on Freight lines and not on
their own. Anyways, Ohio has trails many a state envies.

Lastly, and why I am promoting this when the current organizers aren't...but
TOSRV West in Montana, started by the co-founder of TOSRV Ohio, is May 30-31. It
is a beautiful ride, 110 miles each day, and Glacier Natl Park is but a few hour
drive from the start/finish. It is truly a ride to consider for any of you that
haven't travelled out west that much. It is but a 6.5hr drive for me out here in
NE Oregon but I am doing it this year after doing it in 2003 and 2004. Then it
was the weekend right after TOSRV Ohio, or Mother TOSRV as they call it. They
have moved it back a few weeks as it was 27 degrees Farenheit Sat morning in
2003, and it finally warmed up the last 10 miles enough to rain on us, ugh. It
was also 130 miles then, so they lopped off some miles. It now finishes at Swan
Lake and if you google that, you will see the beauty of the area. You could
probably do the entire trip including a rental car and overnight hotel for
Friday and Sunday and Monday with a side trip to Glacier Natl Park, r/t airfare
for about $800, no small change for sure, but one heck of a healthy fun vacation
to a special place.

I have now done my TOSRV duty.

It is still active. It is the principle route CSX uses to haul coal out of West
Virginia up to Columbus, Toledo, Cleveland and Detroit. I only saw one train on
it all weekend. Guess it's a sign of what's going on with our auto industry.

The Miami Trail portion of the Ohio to Erie Trail is pretty nice with over
seventy miles of continuous bike path. Shorter segments in Knox and Holmes
county are pretty scenic as well.

RAIN. Ride Across INdiana. The most miserable ride I've ever been on. Twice.
And I'm going to do it again just to remind myself what misery really feels
like.

Or GOBA, The Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure. The most pleasant bike ride I've
ever been on.

Charge showed up today online on my credit card, so I started the dispute
process. Will let you know how fast/slow and how many rejections I get before
it is resolved.

Doesn't paint a good picture to me as to whomever arranged the parking and
discounted rate for the event...both at the garage and amongst the TOSRV folks.

That was very well stated, good job! I have seen the same gentleman at the
Chillicothe stop every year since at least the time we have been at Yoctangee
Park, perhaps he was Mead Park as well, but anyway, I thanked him for his hard
work at the water beverage refill area, asked him how long he has been
volunteering....he stated he wasn't sure but at least as long as his wife told
him he wanted to!!! That was great. I told him I would volunteer when I didn't
ride anymore and to give me some room/time without my main squeeze, he said
"better", ha.

These things and other are what makes TOSRV so cool.

I'm sorry for bringing this up again, but this will be the last, til I get a
resolve.
I talked to "Jason" from Standard Parking. He said the published rates I was
looking at were OLD, from past management(Central Parking) , and the new rates
are posted as you drive in to get a ticket(?) .
He's never heard of TOSRV and knew nothing of an agreement for "Parking in the
City Center Garage after 3:00p.m. on Friday until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday for $9.00"
as stated in our TOSRV information, and didn't know there was a "TOSRV PARKING"
sign in the entry of the garage.
Even though, he tried to compute, and still can't justify charging $31.00 and
stated he will have his manager call me tomorrow.

for this? Then it became pretty apparent to me - he's just a kind, giving
person. And giving up his Mother's Day, no less.

I am awaiting mine to show up as well. You can try to call the City Center
parking number and talk with Jason to see if he will refund the difference.
Since I had no reciept (because the machine refused to give one), he was unable
to do so.

Folks, this is a recurring theme each year, no matter how much printed material
is put out about this. I was just collating my TOSRV archives, putting away this
year's paraphenelia with all the previous years and came upon 2005 feeback
letter stating the confusion over parking "NEXT" to City Center, vs. underground
Statehouse Parking. The former seems to be the better deal, so I am told.
Haven't parked there since TOSRV was still giving out the certificates there at
end of ride Sunday.

The other nuances of not getting a receipt is beyond frustrating....downright
sucks. As I have time on my hands combined with a good memory, albeit short, I
will remind everyone via this forum about the parking, around April/May next
year. It is little consolation for the ripoff you incurred, but just remember,
it can always be worse, like them towing your car for no apparent reason. Also,
it is better to make sure you get a firm price for time there and it isn't rude
to back out of the "in" lane even if you have to make others move as well.
Perhaps you can warn them of the price as well.

Good luck on credit card, stick to your guns, for that amount, they usually give
in after a few rejections.

Tony

I don't know why, but on Sunday, on the way back to Columbus,
I kept getting images in my head of a baboon butt I saw at the Cleveland Zoo.

I am unclear why a suggestion to consider a modest route change requires the
admonition to be courteous. Is even the suggestion of change discourteous? Did
you also object to the change of the route north of Circleville? That change
also took us further from the river - is that reason enough to reject it? For
what it's worth, the shoulder on 104 for the stretch near the prisons is both
narrow and in poor condition. The only virtue it retains are tradition, and
proximity to the river, and I fail to see why those virtues trump safety. I
never understand why the possibility of a better alternative seems so
threatening to some.

>Really? There is a wide shoulder most of the way. Try keeping to the right and
being courteous to others. Are you just going to keep moving away from the
river? Then it can be the "Tour of roads that are semi-parallel to the Scioto
River that have no cars on them". Oh, wait, those roads don't exist...

for the enjoyment and safety of all.

I was unable to ride TOSRV, but ride a fair amount and although the bike path is
1/4 mile from my home in Xenia, I do enjoy venturing onto the road more often.
Yesterday I was working with some people from the Chillocothe area, and one
stated that he lives along the TOSRV route. He said he was trying to get to work
and cyclists 3-4 abreast were riding almost to the center line. This of course
got everyone (except me) sharing stories about similar experiences with "rude"
cyclists. Whie we do have rights, we are at the mercy of these 5,000 lb. hunks
of metal being driven by people eating, talking, texting, etc. Yeah, we can own the
road today, but who might pay the price tomorrow?--- On Tue, 5/12/09, bikewalder

Yea, it's one thing if people are tired and inattentive (still not good), but to
be arrogant about "owning the road" ruins it for all (cars and cyclists).
Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away (well 1977 or so on TOSRV) some riders
were "deputized" to take down rider numbers and report if they saw bad riding
behavior. It's no fun being a snitch, but if we get make people more accountable
it would help.
Actually it would be nice if everyone had to take a test before they could
register, but that'll never happen.
I do think that most automobile drivers think any cyclist shouldn't be on the
road. That attitude needs to be changed too. We had a closed course race a few
years ago in Dayton (with local police approval, etc.) on a Sunday morning. It
was in a non-residential area (office buildings) and people taking a short cut
home from church would CURSE at us for having the road closed. Probably only a 1
mile detour for them to get to home. And that's the "good" people.

Without going back and counting the comments, I would guess they are at least
95% negative to cyclists and riding in general. (There's at least one guy who
should have a cop tailing him.) There's a long uphill PR battle if we expect to
change the public's attitude, and many cyclists are not helping.
