Hello,

There is a great ride coming up 7/24 - 7/27 called the Wish A Mile 300
(WAM 300). This is not only a great ride from Traverse City to Chelsea
MI but also benefits the Children of the Make A Wish foundation!

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan has set a goal to grant 200
wishes ($1.6 million) this year. I have set my fundraising goal at
$1,000 and am writing this post to request your support for the
children of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. A donation would be greatly
appreciated. On behalf of the Make-A-Wish Children, thank you in
advance for helping to make wishes come true.

Making a donation is easy. I have enclosed a link to my personal WAM
300 fundraising page below:
http://netcommunity.wishmich.org/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?
pid=191&srcid=214&frsid=167

Alternatively:
- goto www.wishmich.org
- select the WAM page underneath the Donate Now button
- select Donate on the right side of the page
- search using my last name
- select my name Chuck Cory
- Select Donate Now

Thank you for helping to share in the power of a wish!

Chuck

Just wanted to give you a big thank-you for saving my Sunday and getting me
going again after i had my 2nd flat of the day about 15miles out of Portsmouth.
It was drizzling rain and you still stopped to help me on the side of the road
by giving me a spare tube and then pumping it up for me after my cheap pump
wasn't doing it! If you recognize yourself or if anyone reading this recognizes
this man please tell me who he is! He was tall maybe 6'0 to 6'2, an older man in
his 50's or 60's with a strong IRISH accent and was wearing a rain poncho i
think. Thanks for your help, Dan W. Ontario, Canada

I rode my first TOSRV at age 16 in 1974 and finally made it back in
2008 at 50! Yep i took a 34yr hiatus from TOSRV, only because i'm a
long ways away living here in Ontario Canada! But what a great time i
had and i can't wait to ride TOSRV again, this time i'm not waiting
34yrs! I just wanted to say a special thankyou to a man who stopped on
the side of the road on Sunday morning and helped me change my second
flat in the rain! I used my one and only spare tube on my first flat
and the pump i had was no good either. This man stopped in the rain,
gave me his spare and had a good pump, to get me going again! I dont
think i properly thanked you enough. You were a older man maybe late
50's to early 60's quite tall and had a very distinct IRISH accent. If
you recognize yourself, thanks a million pal! Dan from Ont Canada.

I just returned from the Ride of Silence, and as I took off my
jersey, I read the back: "3000 Riders".

Perhaps a tribute/memorial would be to change it to read "2999
Riders" on future jerseys/t-shirts.

Tour de Donut is a blast. Wonderful delicious glazed donuts, as many
as you can eat. Better eat them fast though, to get the time benefit.
I was 2nd in the mens over 50 group last year and my son was 1st in the
mens under 50. He didn't eat any donuts though, just road very fast.

Ride is very well done and we are retuning this year with donuts and
victory in mind.

As a recreational rider and one that's always looking for a well
supported bike tour let me invite you to participate in a National MS
Society Bike Event....the MS150 Bike the Bluegrass.
When I signed on to do my first MS ride in 2006 it was because I
wanted to join other cyclists on a well support bike tour through the
hills of Eastern Kentucky and not because I thought I could make a
difference to someone living with MS. Over the next two years I had
the opportunity to meet some extraordinary people who share a common
thread, they or thier loved one has MS. They live each day fighting
battles to accomplish lifes simplist of tasks. Despite the obstacles
they live with they have inspired me with their positive attitudes
and faith that we are all truly cycling for a cure.
Now as I approach the countdown to the MS150 Bike the Bluegrass I
will ride as a member of Team Schellers to bring attention to this
terrible disease. This time I signed on because I know I can make a
difference to someone living with MS. Understand that MS is affecting
many people in your life or friends lives that we are not even aware
of. It can affect anyone at anytime.
If you can not ride then please consider making a donation to the
National MS Society to support research efforts that will end MS.
by following the attached link to my webpage you can join to ride or
support my ride.

I saw him fall. He shifted when going up the hill and his chain came
off. When the chain came off he lost all his speed and he couldn't
get his cleats out of his pedals. With all that happening he lost
his balance and took a hard fall.

I'll second the Hubbub recommendation - I started riding my fitted
Seven a couple weeks ago, and it makes a difference in comfort and
efficiency. The hills feel about 10-15% smaller. They are actually in
Chesterland, and sell only fitted bikes. They do repairs and parts, too.

Many people's "Bible" of bike fit is Andy Pruitt's Complete Medical
Guide for Cyclists.

Besides seat height, seat placement and cleat placement, which other
people have mentioned, crankarm length can be an issue too if you have
short femurs.

Does anyone know a good bike fitter in the Columbus area? Lots of
shops advertise they have gadgets and whatnot, but is there a human
being who knows what s/he's doing?

Greetings all: As usual, many a postings in May after the ride, albeit
the sad tale of the poor Doctor's passing.

I am however glad to have done the ride, successfully completing both
days, and without a flat! Seems there was a larger amount
than "normal"...maybe the rain on Sunday contributed.........

Charlie Pace, great to see you Saturday morning! I have pegged a motto
for TOSRV 2008.....real proud to have coined it "Better a wet tailwind
than a dry headwind"...............we have had a few tailwinds each way
over the years, but Sunday's was awesome, and a TOSRV without rain is
like a normal day without sunshine!

Best regards, see you in 2009..............tony, echo,or, TOSRV since 84

1. Insufficient training. You can’t expect to ride a bunch of 30-mile
rides, for example, and then do back-to-back centuries without pain
2. Poor pacing. If you do the last 25 mi. much slower than the first 25,
you are over stripping your ability and looking for trouble. I always start
out slow and pour it on at the end if I feel good. Then I am excited in
anticipation of my next long ride.
3. Poor bike fit. Often the front of the knee will hurt with insufficient
seat height and the rear with too much, but there are all sorts of other fit
issues such as cleat placement, seat forward and aft, even one leg longer
than the other. I ride a recumbent, so I can’t be more specific here.
4. Insufficient nutrition. Lack of electrolytes and insufficient hydration
can both cause cramps and slow recovery. Failure to replace carbs after the
ride can also slow recovery. There are specialized products that can help.
You can learn about this at www.hammernutrition.com
<http://www.hammernutrition.com/> . They cater to the ultra endurance
athlete and some of their material is self-serving, but still a good source.
Doing comfortable century rides is the first step to ultra endurance riding.
5. Lack of stretching and strengthening exercises. Bicycling is a
repetitive motion that strengthens muscle groups while leaving others
relatively weak. Squats, lunges, hamstring, and quad stretches can make a
big difference in preventing pain, easing recovery and preventing injury.
Never do these cold! Always warm up first and don’t overdo it. A trip to a
sports oriented physical therapist would be a good way to get a routine
aimed at your fitness level.
6. I don’t think that cold temps should be an issue if you do the above. I
see brevet riders riding in the 30s and 40s in shorts without knee problems.

For those of you who really want to learn about yourselves and your
capabilities, I suggest you consider randonneuring. It’s for people who
want to see what’s beyond riding centuries. That community can offer
suggestions to help in the areas I mentioned above, as well as in the areas
of equipment, training etc. For more information see: http://www.rusa.org/

For the record, I am an ultra endurance bicyclist who uses Hammer products
and is a RUSA member and rides their events. I have no other vested
interest in either group.

I have had the same issue with my knees, this is my 3rd TOSRV and I
noticed the problem on my first one and again on this one. Last
year, my knees ached after two days but it wasn't a big deal (at
least I could still walk up stairs!). I have come to the conclusion
that the temperature at the start of the day has a lot to do with
whether or not my knees will hurt at the end of the day. Last year
it was a bit warmer in the morning (i think). My first TOSRV I rode
in sleet/rain to Circleville with no leggings and I did not wear my
leggings this year. Next time I ride and the temp is below 50 I will
be using Icy Hot and leggings, just to see if my theory is correct.
I just feel like I hurt more when it takes longer to warm up because
of weather. I'm no health care professional but so far my knee pain
has always been consistent with the weather at the start of the day.

Pick up a copy of the book "Bike for Life: How to Ride to 100" it
has section on this very subject as well as an abundance of other
great information.

Julie

I too love the Chuck Harris mirrors. I got my first one last year at
Hancock Horizontal Hundred and I was instantly devoted. Not only do
these mirrors have a larger visable range of sight, but they are the
most STABLE and still bicycle mirror I have ever owned (and that
includes the one I used to have on my handbars on my hybrid). I love
these mirrors. I just about another one from my club for my helmet
(the other one I have attaches to my sunglasses).

Every time I see Chuck Harris, I want to buy out his entire table...
I want a life-time supply of his mirrors so that I'm never forced to
buy another store brand again!

I did not know they were made out of bike spokes. WAY COOL.

Always,

Heidi E

THOSE mirrors that Chuck Harris provides are really cool. I
didnt know
that one of the components used in producing these things is an
actual
	 bicycle spoke!!!

This was my first TOSRV and it was a blast. I did suffer a case
of
patella tendonitis. Anyone know how to eliminate it from
reoccuring
during longer rides.....20-40miles are not a problem, i didnt
start
feeling the pain until waverly (apprx 75miles).

Any suggestions will greatly be appreciated.

thanks all for a great ride and thanks to the volunteers for
excellent
	 hospitable service.

I put together a little pictorial of my first TOSRV!!!
