....it's all been good advice:-)
Some conservative tips:
1. Ride indoors during the Winter: drink plenty of water - 2 water bottles,
watch your favorite TV show; it will be hot so use a fan, ride in the
basement/garage, under a ceiling fan....I like to watch OSU basketball so I
begin @ tipoff- sprint during commercials and take a break during halftime then
same routine for the second half.
2. Ride with a group in the Spring: increase your mileage 10% @ least every 2
weeks.
3. Carbo load 10 days prior to TOSRV: bannanas, pasta etc.
4. Become a weather expert: pack according to weather radar....zip-lock bag of
socks, extra layers....talk to other veteran riders....the toughest thing about
TOSRV is the weather
4. Pace yourself: TOSRV is not a race....in your mind break the ride down into
4 different 25 mile rides....ride with a group of friends with equal
goals...stay out of pace lines!!!
5. Never give up: Never give up...Never give up....Never give up...etc:-)

i agree tosrv is an excellant ride. ive done it twice. the first time was in
very cold rainy weather with a strong head wind. for your first century though
you cant beat it. its very flat and well provisioned. as long as you put the
miles in you should be fine. try to put in at least one 75 to 80 mile day a
couple of weeks before the ride.

It is a excellent ride, ive done it 3 times and took last year off to race so i
noe the commitment that comes with training heres some of my tips, hope they
help: Buy a trainer, to ride indoors, using a trainer allows you to focus your
efforts on certin cycling aspects, such as pedal stroke, posistioning as well as
just getting used to the long time in then saddle. Also keep lots of water,
energy gels, a towel, and some tunes to help pass the time. since your not
outside the sweat dosent evaporate so its gonna get hott fast, sweat is also
really corosive, so use the towel to protect you bike.Getting stronger and
faster comes with time, so start slow and work up the intensity. to gain
endurence just increase the amount in time on your bike, dont judge your rides
by distance but by time. Because 15 miles one day is totaly diffrent from 15
miles last week, start out by riding what fits your schedual and bulid upon
that. If your limited on time just increase
the intensisty, more bang for your buck, so-to-speakUse clipless pedals, for
better power transfer, also makes for a more comfortable ride just take time
getting used to being attached to your bike, cliping in and out many time to get
the action down.Dress in layers and dress according to weather, being overly
hott or really cold makes for a shitty rideKeep a training diary and use it
everyday, even when you have nothing to put in that days slot use it to put what
you ate that day or just thoughts in general. pays off next season when u wanna
see where you fell off the wagon.Stay hydrated, ehough saidEat often. While on
the bike eat carb rich foods and gels every 45min to 1hr on a ride lasting over
a hour and a half. it keeps your tank full and energy stores full.hopes this
helps, if you have any more speific questions, just contact me throuthe messege
board. take care, Steve --- On Mon, 11/3/08, g59johnson <g59johnson@yahoo. com>

rvalley@yahoogro ups.comDate: Monday, November 3, 2008, 10:58 AMI am very
strongly considering the TORSV 09. This event will be afirst for me in that i
have not to this point even ridden 100 miles ina single day. I have been riding
consistently (2 - 3 times a week) for a little overa year and average about 15+
mph. Longest single ride is 33 miles. With the advance of cold weather in my
area (central VA) I am reducedto Sat/Sun rides and trying to get in 2 spin
classes a week. I am open to training suggestions and or experiences during the
TORSV(nutrition before, during, after).thanks in advance for the advice.George.
