The tour total number goal is approximately 3,000 the past few years.
This is the determined "ideal" number in regards to numbers of people
on the road and level of support that can sustained at a good reliable
level. 3,000 was the usual average during most of the 70s when it began
steadily climing in the mid 80s up until the mid 90's when it peaked
out at about 6600 in 93 or 94.
As for new cyclists and reason for declining enrollment.....things have
changed in our US society: lack of time, competing interests and the
general interests of all sports peaks and ebbs. Jogging was huge in the
early 70s and as that population got older and the effects of jogging
took their toll, cycling was the natural transition to continue
activity.
Looking at the participants.....those aged 11-30 accounted to 9% of the
total participation....expanding this to 11-40 increases to 25% of all
riders.
30% of all riders were 41-50 yrs old and 28% for those 51-
60.....accounting for 58% or over half of all participants. This
cooresponds to the earlier participants cited above.
As long as there is 1 or more doing the ride route the second weekend
of May, TOSRV will go on..................tony, echo,or
