The Uefa Cup has been whittled down to just 16 teams from nine
different countries. All eight first leg ties take place this Thursday
with the return legs due to take place a week later.
With no obvious stand-out tie of the round lets start with
Middlesbrough's match with Uefa Cup favourites Roma. The competition
has been a much-needed plus in an otherwise disappointing campaign for
the Teesiders, although a recent improvement in fortunes has at least
eased relegation concerns thus allowing themselves to concentrate on
their European adventure. Their opponents Roma saw their remarkable
record-breaking winning streak in Serie A come to an end at the
weekend, but nonetheless are definitely the team in form and team to
beat in this competition.
Roma are one of three Italian teams left in the competition, with
Udinese and Palermo completing the trio
