WHEW...

Maybe I can finally start to breathe (and sleep) again. It's been an
emotional, trying last few days for me. Can't imagine what it's been
like for him and his family.

WHEW.

And thank you, cew47 for posting this. The first thing I saw this
morning, before I was able to check the news sites, was your message
in my inbox so I could approve it. So, THANK YOU. Your post brought
me immense relief!

According to the New York Post this morning, a source is saying Tom
will not require surgery and could be back to pitching within a week.
I really hope medication can help him. I hate to think of him being so
close to 300 wins and having something like this keep him short of that
milestone.

Me too. I feel a little bit better about it today than I did
yesterday when I first heard rumors about it. Yesterday, I was
hearing "blood clot in arm, season-ending surgery, career
threatening." Today, at least, it seems that, it's not as clear cut
as that. It could wind up being something very, very minor and he
wouldn't miss but a start or two, or it could end up being something
that needs to be repaired surgically, and he would be out the rest
of the season. But hopefully whatever happens, he'll be able to
completely recover from it, with absolutely no problems and go out
there next season and pitch again.

And best case scenario, he's able to go out there THIS season and
pitch again.

I'm just relieved to know that, it's not something anyone considers
life-threatening, nor anything that should cause long-term health
issues, etc. Because as much as I want to see him pitch and all of
that, my #1 concern was him. Thankfully, it sounds like he's going
to be okay.....

But man, it's been a nerve wracking couple of days just for me as a
fan... I can't imagine how he's been feeling and what's been going
through his mind.

Let's hope he winds up getting really good news after the tests are
completed....

I'd really like to see him reach 300 as well. And I think he still
can, but he's definitely going through a rough patch right now.

I'm not sure what is going on. I notice he doesn't seem to be throwing
his curveball very much at all. I'm not sure why that is -- whether it
has to do with the individual team he's facing and their propensity to
hit the curve -- or if he just isn't confident enough to throw it.

I hope he IS confident enough in that pitch or gains confidence in it,
because I think it is SUCH a good and important pitch for him. And he
throws a beautiful curve.

He's hit rough patches before and pulled through them, so I am
completely confident that he can do the same here, but I'd be lying if
I said I wasn't at least a little concerned. I just hate to see him
struggling.

But hopefully he's able to figure out what's going on and bounce back
in his next outing.

I definitely know how you feel, though. I've been a Glavine fan for a
long time too and became a Mets fan when he went there.

I have been a fan of Tom Glavine for a very long time. I became a
Mets fan when he started pitching for them.

I wonder what is happening with him right now. He was pitching so
well earlier in the year. I guess it is just a slump. Today against
the Braves he had a couple of tough innings at first, then settled
down a bit. Then in the 4th inning he had two outs when the defense
broke down and he struggled to get that last out. Unfortunately, he
was not allowed to pitch in the 5th inning and will not receive the
win. I really would like to see him get to 300 wins.

New York Mets 2006 Report Card presented by the New York Mets Fans

Time to have some fun with the team we, Met fans root for and
follow. With alomost 1/3 of the 2006 season completed, it is time
for us fans to rate the team as it presently stands. I have tried
to be fair, in listing everyone that I could think of. If I left
someone off this list, the last slot is for you to make mention of
anyone/anything which was left unidentified.

Please grade (A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, or F) each
of the following, explaining why you made that choice. This is a
question of meritt so let me remind everyone that is completing this
task to keep their comments constructive in nature. Attackative
comments are not needed and will be handled within the yahoo group
which the reply was posted.

Have some fun with this before the columnists post their findings on
the team as they always do, each year. Compare your findings with
your fellow Met fan to see how much you differ or actually are on
the same page.

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 03/12/06

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. —Tom Glavine was upset that Braves general
manager John Schuerholz disclosed what the former Braves pitcher
considered a private matter, but a face-to-face meeting will have to
wait.

Glavine didn't make the New York Mets' trip to Disney World to face
the Braves on Saturday. Atlanta plays the Mets again Thursday at Port
St. Lucie.

In Schuerholz's new book "Born To Win," he wrote that Glavine had
a "purgatory of second thoughts" after opting for a three-year deal
with the Mets over a three-year offer to stay with Atlanta in
December 2002.

Schuerholz wrote the pitcher changed his mind in an emotional meeting
with Schuerholz and Glavine's wife at the Glavines' home, deciding he
would stay with the Braves and take their revamped two-year offer.

But two days after their meeting, Glavine told Schuerholz he was
going to stick with his Mets agreement.

Schuerholz speculates in the book that Glavine was pressured by his
agent and the players' union to take the bigger Mets offer over
Atlanta's.

Glavine addressed the issue with reporters at Port St. Lucie on
Friday. He didn't deny the meeting with Schuerholz or having second
thoughts about leaving Atlanta, but said he was upset the GM wrote
about it in a book.

"I'm a little upset about it," said Glavine, who spent 16 seasons
with the Braves and still lives in Alpharetta. "I don't think it's
anybody's business. I really don't. That's the way I've always looked
at it."

Glavine was asked if the remarks seemed hurtful.

"I'll say this and I don't want to talk about it anymore," he
said. "It's interesting to me that for somebody who's been so tight-
lipped about everything that goes on in that organization — player
transactions, this, that and the other thing — that I'm the only
player that he's ever talked about when it comes to a negotiation.

"He talks about what happened with me, what went wrong or why they
didn't sign me, and now whatever is in the book. I'm the only one
he's ever talked about. To me, there's something that's trying to be
explained, that he feels has to be explained, if that's his deal I
don't know what to say.

"From my standpoint," Glavine said, "it was a business discussion
between two people or three people that should have remained that way
and it hasn't. But that's his deal, that's not mine."

Schuerholz wrote the book with former Orlando Sentinel columnist
Larry Guest. It's scheduled to arrive in some Atlanta-area bookstores
this week and be available nationwide April 3.

During his 25 years as a GM with the Kansas City Royals and Braves,
Schuerholz was known for keeping negotiations and front-office
business private and running an air-tight organization with no
information leaks. He said Guest and the book's publishers convinced
him to be more forthcoming than he had planned to be entering the
project, but Schuerholz was happy with how the book turned out and
believed it fair and truthful.

Guest said Schuerholz struggled with the Glavine story and how much
of it he wanted to put in the book.

"John agonized over every phrase in that passage to make sure he was
telling the story in a fair way that gave maximum personal
consideration to Glavine," said Guest, who was at Saturday's Braves-
Mets game.

Glavine is in his fourth season with the Mets, a vested-option year
on his contract. He'll be eligible for free agency next winter and
said last month he could only envision pitching for the Mets or
Braves in 2007.

Whether the Braves would have or will have any interest seemed
uncertain, since they have Tim Hudson and Mike Hampton under contract
and are expected to pick up an option on John Smoltz's contract for
2007.

Glavine's 275-184 record includes a 33-41 mark since leaving Atlanta.

Glavine's goal: 300
'Unless my arm falls off, I'm not getting this close and shutting it
down,' veteran says

By GUY CURTRIGHT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/27/06

Port St. Lucie, Fla. — Turning 40 is troubling enough for any
baseball player. Having it marked twice makes it even tougher.

Although Tom Glavine's birthday isn't until March 25, his wife,
Chris, threw the party in Alpharetta before he left for spring
training with the New York Mets.

"Some people think I'm already 40, and I still have a month to go,"
Glavine said. "But getting a little older doesn't bother me. I feel
great. To me, 40 is just a number. It doesn't mean all that much."

There is one number, however, that is very meaningful to the former
Braves left-hander. With 25 more victories, Glavine would become the
23rd pitcher to reach 300 wins. Only 10 have done it in the past 50
years.

"Unless my arm falls off, I'm not planning on getting this close to
300 wins and shutting it down," Glavine said. "It's the benchmark for
pitchers. I sure hope 300-game winners aren't extinct."

Glavine left Atlanta to sign with the Mets as a free agent in 2003
with 242 victories. But after winning at least 20 games on five
occasions for the Braves, he was 33-41 in his first three seasons
with the Mets.

A bounce-back final three months in 2005, however, has left Glavine
rejuvenated and anticipating the push toward 300 victories.

"I had a great second half, and I'm looking forward to picking up
where I left off," Glavine said. "There are different things I can do
now. I'm not so locked into doing things one way, like I had been.

"That gives me a good feeling. I'm excited. I have more options now,
which is fun."

Glavine had fallen into a very hittable pattern, and his old team
made the left-hander pay the most. The Braves battered their former
teammate.

"I had to change my style and erase the scouting report," said
Glavine, who had a 2.22 ERA in the second half. "I had to make it
harder for guys to stand in the box and zero in on one or two pitches
in one location.

"I pitched inside more and threw my breaking ball more. I also
changed my sequence of pitches. Now there is a question in the
hitter's mind about what I'm trying to do."

Glavine, who finished 13-13 with a 3.53 ERA, might be closer to 300
if he had received more run support and the Mets' bullpen been
better. But the goal is still reachable in two seasons.

"It's important for me to be able to do it in two years," Glavine
said. "After that, I don't know how much longer I'm willing to keep
pitching. My family is getter tougher and tougher to leave, and I
can't play this game forever.

"My perfect plan is to get to 300 and then step away if I want to. I
don't know about pitching for three more years. I don't want to just
hang around trying to win a few more games."

Glavine, who played his first 16 seasons with the Braves, doesn't
even know where he'll be pitching next year. He is in the final year
of the contract he signed to leave Atlanta.

Is there a chance of Glavine, accused by some fans of turning his
back on his old team, returning to Atlanta and winning his 300th game
for the Braves?

"There is just one or two places I want to play next year," Glavine
said. "I've enjoyed my time in New York, and I obviously enjoyed my
time in Atlanta. I still live there. I really can't see myself going
anywhere else.

"But then again, I guess you never know. If the Mets and the Braves
don't want me, I'd have to cross that bridge. I hope that isn't the
case, though. It was hard enough changing teams before."

Even with the Braves and Mets expected to battle for first place in
the National League East this season, no one in the Atlanta dugout
will be rooting against Glavine to win 300.

"I sure want to see Tommy get it," manager Bobby Cox said in the
Braves camp at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. "He was really good in the
second half last season. The bullpen blew some games for him, but
that won't happen with Billy Wagner there this season."

"I made the comment a few years ago that I didn't think there would
be any more 300-game winners, so I've already been proven wrong twice
[by Roger Clemens and Greg Maddux]," Braves ace John Smoltz said. "I
sure hope that I'm proven wrong at least one more time."

"I faced him so many years, now I get a chance to catch him," Paul Lo
Duca, obtained by the Mets from Florida, said of Glavine. "He's a
future Hall of Famer. I'd love to catch his 300th win."

We've had several new members join the club in the last few days so
I wanted to send a big WELCOME to those folks and, provided you
aren't people just joining to spam the message board (LOL! Hey, A
lot of times that's what it is!) please feel free to drop us a
message so we can get this board going again.

Hopefully with the acquisition of Carlos Delgado, the Mets offense
will score a few more runs for Tom Glavine. (And, you know, the
other starters too but, I'm pretty Glavine-focused)

It will be interesting to see where Billy Wagner ends up. Hopefully
with the Mets...

25 more wins til 300....25 more... It's getting close, folks!

I hope everyone living in the US had a great Thanksgiving!

And if you went out shopping today, let's hope you make it back home
in one piece. LOL. Sometimes those stores can get Ca-razy!

Be sure to check out this funny article from the Mets web site:

Glavine talks about how lost he was doing the handshakes after his 11-
0 win over the Rockies. Then he equates it to how lost he was at a
father-daughter outing with Amber last year, when he had to do the
electric slide. LOL

Good stuff.

I'd pay to see him doing the electric slide, btw.

Last night's game against the Rockies was an awesome way to end the
2005 season for Tom Glavine. I was only able to watch the 9th inning,
but seeing him get another complete game and this one a shutout was
great! I have yet to see him pitch in person, so hopefully I will be
able to next season.

Tom has definitely been on a roll. If he had more run support
throughout the year, he would be well above the .500 mark. I hope he
can get one more win this season to get him at that mark, but more
importantly get him closer to 300 wins!

Another classic Glavine gem tonight.

Tom pitched 8 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs, striking out 6
and walking 1 in a 5-2 win over the Nationals.

And, he went 2-2 at the plate.

Awesome job by Tommy!

The win moves him to 12-13 on the year and lowers his era to 3.69.
Also, it's win number 274 for his career which puts him 29th on the
all-time wins list. It's also the 30th win against the Nats/Expos.
He has beaten them more times than he has beaten any other team and
more than any other pitcher in history has.

Let's see, what else? Oh, this is the 9th straight start Tom has
made where he has given up 3 or fewer runs.

Geez, has he been on a tear or what? He's been simply awesome. It's
been so much fun to watch.

Tom should have one more start on the season (agains the rockies)
and if he wins that one, that would pull his record to 13-13 on the
season and give him 275 career wins. Gee, that'd be nice, wouldn't
it?

Man, it was a great game, wasn't it? I'm so glad Tom was able to get
the win and even more than that, go the distance. It was awesome.
I'm not afraid to say that I might have had to stifle a few weepy
tears in the bottom of the 6th, when the Mets managed to put up a
four spot. LOL. Tom just never gets run support. I didn't know
what to do with him having a three run lead. heheh.

Awesome job by Tom, great job by the mets scoring him some runs and
just a really fun game to watch overall.

YAY!

It was great to see Tom Glavine get the win today especially since it
was against the Braves. It was even better to see him go the distance
for his first complete game in over a year. I'm not able to see many
games due to my schedule, but I was glad that I was able to catch
todays game.

Apparently this person that I'm having the argument with is a Yankees
fan who has their years screwed up. They said that the Yankees won and
that Derek Jeter was the MVP. Ha ha ha!! That's one argument that I've
won! Thanks!!~~Angie :)

Yep, you are correct. 1995 was the World Series Atlanta won. They
won games 1 and 2 in Atlanta, lost game 3 in Cleveland, won game 4
in Cleveland, lost game 5 in Cleveland, then came back to Atlanta in
game 6 and won that one to clinch.

Glavine pitched games 2 and game 6, so he pitched the clincher,
going 8 innings, giving up only 1 hit. (And was awarded the WS MVP
trophy afterward) The only run scored in game 6 was a solo homer by
David Justice. And Wohlers came on to save the game.

In other news, finally got to see the ESPY skit Glavine did. FUNNY
stuff. I thought all of them (Glav, Piazza, Pedro, Shilling) did a
really great job. None of them seemed too wooden in their acting or
anything. It was really great!
