You are right, but still, it's painful for me to see Tom having to play
against the Braves now, seeing the media make a fuss over it, and seeing both
Tom & Greg Maddux not as productive as they used to be. I think they are
having trouble with that new machine being used in some ballparks (Shea is one)
that signal the umpire whether a pitch is in or out of the strike zone. Control
pitchers like Glavine & Maddux need to be able to fool hitters into swinging
at something that isn't going where the batter thinks it's going. I read
yesterday that Tom complained that umpires have told him that they aren't going
to
give him any called strikes "on the corners" when the machine tells them it
is out.
It looks like technology is starting to take the game out of the hands
of the umpires, and when you make baseball less about strategy and more about
science, I think it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of watching baseball. I
hope our guys can rebound in the second half of the season.

If I had everything I'd carry it in my heart and pass it out to all
the wonderful people in the world, meanwhile I would enjoy life just
as much as I do now.
I agree, I am a Braves fan. Over the years I've seen many players
come and go, yes they make the team but as they leave they don't
break the team, you bond with new players....guess its really what
life is about. Think of all the friends you've had through the years
and how many you've left behind but also remember how many you have
now. They all shape who you are but not what you are.

Now that he's playing for a last place team, he probably regrets the
decision himself.
I'm only surprised that his record is as good as it.
How much better would his record be if he didn't have overpaid
bufoons like Mo Vaughn backing him up?

I have been a Tom Glavine fan for 11 years now, he is my favorite
player and always will be. I have met Tom more than once and he is
always so giving toward his fans in fact I met him again in March at
the Mets Spring Training camp and as always he was still the nicest
player I have ever met. I was very upset and disappointed how the
Braves treated him because to me they will never have another player
as dedicated to the game, the team, and his fans. He is truely the
example of what a baseball player should be. I wish him the best of
luck. And for the Braves we'll it's their loss.

Well, this list does not get very much action. Having said that, I feel
as you did, very sorry that they let Tom go. (And Kevin Millwood, too.) I
am a Braves fan first, but I always liked Tom as a player and as a person
(not that I ever met him, but everything I've read about him has been so
positive). I won't put the blame on Tom, this is how baseball (and NFL
football) is now; you can probably kiss goodbye the notion that any one
player will remain with one team for his whole career. From what I read, Tom
would have liked to stay with the Braves, but they really didn't offer him
anything. For a player of his longevity, I thought that the Braves owed him
a decent contract offer, or a good reason why not. Sometimes, maybe it's
your pride that's on the line. I am still a Braves fan, not a Mets fan, but
I continue to wish Tom Glavine all the best in his career, and in his future.

This is the first time that I have been to this board since Tom left
the Braves...this will be my last post as I am leaving the group. I
was angry at both sides because, they couldn't make a deal. I thought
the Braves management was too stubborn and, I was thinking Tom should
stay because, he has enough money anyway and, he should stay for his
team and, his fans. I have lost some interest in baseball because of
the things that go on. You love a team but, it is always changing. I
am a Braves fan forever and, miss Glavine. I wish him the best...I
hope the Mets treat him well. But, I will never be a Mets fan.

YOU CAN PROBALY GET TOM GLAVINES MINOR LEAGUE NUMBERS ONLINE.
I know what you mean about the bad taste in your mouth, Angie. I have
it too. I'm still a Braves fan, but it's just really different now.
It really bothered me how the Braves front office treated the entire
situation. They didn't seem to do a very good job in letting Tom know
he was appreciated. I'm also bothered by some fans in Atlanta who
have bashed Tom so terribly. They call him greedy, washed up, doesn't
care about the fans and now that Maddux has agreed to arbitration,
they say "See, Maddux is more loyal that Glavine could ever be" etc,
etc. It really angers me. I'm glad he still has some of his fan base.
Cause the thing is, Tom isn't greedy. Tom isn't washed up. And Tom
certainly does care about his fans. I know that. Ugh. It's all very
unsettling. But, I've already updated my web site with photos of him
in his Mets uniform and I've already purchased a New York Mets
baseball cap. Yep, I've joined the darkside. LOL.

No matter what uniform he wears, I will always be a Tom Glavine fan
and I will support him now that he is a Met. I have always been
faithful to the Atlanta Braves but you know, the way they have
treated Tommy just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They have only
given Greg Maddux a one year deal and this is a man that has won four
Cy Young Awards while being a Brave!! What in the world is wrong with
the Braves management?!! To treat their two best pitchers the way
that they have?!! Anyway back to Tommy... He's my guy and I will

strange and it's gonna take a little getting used to seeing him in
another uniform. I am so ashamed of the Braves management!!! I just
don't see how I am going to be able to muster up the same support for
them after what has happened. But I am opening up my heart and mind
to the Mets for sure. Tom Glavine stays number one in my heart.
Thanks for letting me share my opinion. Sincerely-Angie B.

Well, I think Tom really wanted to stay a member of the Atlanta
Braves, but it just didn't work out that way. They eventually gave
him the amount of years that he wanted in his contract, but they
wanted him to defer a large portion of his salary in the second and
third years...and I just don't think they could work out the dollar
amount of that deferment. So they parted ways. It's unfortunate
because he has spent his entire career with the Braves and it just
seemed like he was destined to remain a brave. It's definitely
disappointing for me as a Glavine fan. I am sure it was disappointing
for Tom as well. It's not that he was wanting to leave the team. He
wanted to stay, to finish his career with the Braves. It just
couldn't be worked out for that to happen. But, I am glad he was able
to find a team he felt comfortable with and that could give him what
he deserves. I think he has found that in the New York Mets. So, as
much as I have been conditioned to absolutely detest the Mets, I'm
having to sway from that now. Though I'll always remain a Braves fan,
I now am opening my heart to the Mets as well. Afterall, they just
landed one of the best southpaw pitchers (not to mention one of the
classiest human beings) in the game.
It would have been nice to keep him but now he is a Met and although
I will always care for Tom I am still a Braves fan first.

Would you believe this is the fourth annual survey? Amazing. Anyway,
here it is, the 2003 Braves Survey. As usual, there are a series
of questions about the Braves and MLB. Please submit your answers
to me personally at dkachur@... (remove the obvious).
After the season is over I will announce the person who got the
highest
score. As a prize, the winner will receive the eternal respect and
adoration of their fellow Braves fans.
You receive 1 point for each question you answer correctly. If
a question has a (2) beside it, that means you can get up to
2 points if you give me the correct player AND the correct number
(statistic). For example, for question 4, if you answered Chipper
Jones, you would get 1 point, but if you guessed Chipper Jones
and 158 games, you would get 2 points. If you guessed Chipper Jones
and 157 games OR Andruw Jones and 158 games, you would get 1 point.
Also, some questions are time sensitive. I will stop accepting
answers for questions 19 and 20 when the respective players sign.
I will stop accepting all answers when spring training begins.
Please direct any inquiries to me.

Even after that nasty July, Tommy has still got it. He pitched 7
shutout innings against the Giants and won his 16th of the year 1-0.
Good game for him! He could still win the Cy Young although it's
looking like he won't. Although, miracles can still happen and I can
still hold out hope.
Tom has pitched exceptionally well against the Mets this year,
yeilding only 3 runs in 3 starts so I'm hoping that he can continue
his success in his fourth start against them this season. He is only
1-1 against New York but the way the Braves have been winning lately,
I wouldn't be surprised if the offense could get him a fe wruns to
work with. And the game is going to be televised on ESPN, which I'm
very excited about. Tom deserves this win, it will tie him with
Whitey Ford and it will help put him one more win closer to 20 this
year.
