Mets lost 5-4, Glavine gets no decision   Message List

The Mets lost today 5-4. Glavine picked up the no decision, after
going 6 innings, giving up 4 runs off 11 hits. Now, normally I
might think differently about a 4 run, 11 hit performance, but
today, I'm actually very relieved and satisfied and I think it's a
total step in the right direction. Here's why:

The 4 runs all came in the first and second inning. After that? Four
scoreless innings. Two walks is his lowest walk total in a game
this season and much improved over the 6 walks he gave up against
the Phils his last time out. Plus, both of those walks came in the
first. After that? No walks. 11 hits in 6 innings is high (stating
the obvious there, hee!), but let's look into that number. Six of
the hits came in the first two innings, after that, 5 hits over 4
innings (and a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th). Much better.

Now, I might read a story later that has Glavine quoted as saying he
felt horrible out there, couldn't get his pitches where he wanted
them, felt uncomfortable, etc, but for now, on the surface, I think
this was a relatively good outing for him and something he can
totally build on and take positives from. He struggled the first
two innings, no question, but after that, seems to have done a good
job of things. After the first two innings, he really could have
been thinking, "Oh no, here we go again" and the game could have
been blown open. But he didn't. He was able to go out there (with
help from his teammates, of course!) and settle down and not give up
anymore runs, which allowed his team to stay in the ball game and
eventually tie things up (before the Brewers scored the winning run
in the 9th). He kept the team in the game.

I knew he could bounce back. Totally something positive to build on
and his next time out, he'll build even more. I really think this
is the start of things turning around for him and getting back on
track after two poor outings against the Braves and Phils.
