You are right, but still, it's painful for me to see Tom having to play
against the Braves now, seeing the media make a fuss over it, and seeing both
Tom & Greg Maddux not as productive as they used to be. I think they are
having trouble with that new machine being used in some ballparks (Shea is one)
that signal the umpire whether a pitch is in or out of the strike zone. Control
pitchers like Glavine & Maddux need to be able to fool hitters into swinging
at something that isn't going where the batter thinks it's going. I read
yesterday that Tom complained that umpires have told him that they aren't going
to
give him any called strikes "on the corners" when the machine tells them it
is out.
It looks like technology is starting to take the game out of the hands
of the umpires, and when you make baseball less about strategy and more about
science, I think it takes a lot of the enjoyment out of watching baseball. I
hope our guys can rebound in the second half of the season.
