Yes, we are ready for Frances. I am happy to see that she is now a category 2
storm, so that will be easier on everyone. Looks like we will be housebound for
a few days with the heavy rains, though. Hope that your family comes out okay,
too!

Mal's charity event isn't next week, but the week after. The Gala will be at
the
Mariott @ Sawgrass this year instead of at the Ponte Vedra Club.

Glad to see you found your way back to us, Kristina :)

Mary

P.S. Tell your mom "hi" for me.

MaliVai Washington has a big Gala and Celebrity Golf/Tennis Pro-Ams every
September
to raise funds for his Kids Foundation. I volunteer with his charity and am on
the event
committee every year. It is on Sept 13-14 (Monday night, all day Tuesday) in
Jacksonville, Florida. Todd and Mal are good friends and we can always expect
Todd to join in the activities.

Hi there,

Also the first time I write though I have been reading in the past!
I am an average but committed player from Italy.
So very sad that Todd Martin is leaving the game. He was one of the
most inspiring and complete players out there.
One kind of thought that it was about time : I have got the feeling
that he was losing many close games and many first rounds, must be
frustrating when you have been playing - and beating - the best
players in the planet.
Still I hope he'll come back on his decision!

ciao

I'm not sure but I think he was having leg/knee problems and it would have
been too difficult for him to continue competing. I watched the live score of
his match through the 1st 2 sets with the TV on in case they showed his match
instead of Serena's boots, but they didn't. I went out and played tennis myself
for a little while. When I came back Martin was serving at 5-3 in the 4th, but
I guess he just didn't have another 5th set in him.

The network showed the last game and the retirement announcement. I'm happy
to report he went out swinging and hit a good forehand return on the last point.
I really hope they have a ceremony for him like they did for Chang/Sampras.
I've gotten a little better at video editing so I'll put everything from his
match and retirement announcement on a video. If anyone is interested I'll send
it to you.

Any ideas what his plans are now? Do you think he'll play on the senior tour,
become a commentator, coach, or what? I know he wants to stay connected to
tennis.

Yesterday was especially sad for me because I've been watching him since 1993
when I was 12. I really enjoyed all the battles that he's had over the years,
especially his wins at the US Open over Rusedski and Moya. Most of all I liked
the way he conducted himself on and off the court. I wish more people behaved
like him.

Lucky you! They showed stuff all of the match on TV here and then
didn't even show his speech :(

Damn them!

Yay for you, catching the wristband and scoring an autograph!

You would think they could spare some time for a little ceremony of
sorts... definitely should.

Oh, by the way... welcome :)

Nooooo!! Guess we knew it was coming, but still... Noooooooo!
The Australian Open just won't be the same without him. Jeez who they
gonna put on Court 18 now? ;)

Remembering the good times (and the not so good)
Thanks Todd, we love ya
:)

Does this mean we're now a retirement home?

Apologies for my absence (looks around sheepishly, waiting for the
abuse to begin)

The last match that I saw at todays (8/30) US Open was Todd Martin vs. Fabrice
Santoro.
Todd will always be one of the classiest guys ever to step foot on a tennis
court and will
always have great respect in the tennis world. Tonight, after his 4-6, 6-4, 6-4,
7-5, loss
to the #31 seed, Fabrice Santoro, Todd announced his retirement and the end to
his great
career. I was at that match which ended just a few hours ago at 11:00. (After
the match
Todd threw his wristband up into the crowd and I got it! I also got his
autograph too, HIS
LAST ONE!). I've read over this fan page for a long time now and I guess it's a
little too late
that I just joined now. Todd gave such an emotional speech and the few people
(100-200)
applauded after every point and at the end of his retirement speech. The whole
match I
was screaming. "C'MON TODD!" along with everyone else in the stadium. It seemed
destined to go to 5 sets after Martin broke Santoro in the 4th set to go up 5-3,
serving for
the set but Todd couldn't pull it out. I will never forget the great career of
tennis great and
legend, Todd Martin.

P.S. Do you think he'll get a special ceremony on Arthur Ashe like Chang got
last year? He
DEFINITELY deserves a ceremony...

That's too bad about Chris. I watched the mens finals of the singles and
doubles and thought they were good matches. I wish Mardy Fish had won, but I
was still happy to see a good match.

Unfortunately Todd didn't win yesterday, but he did play one great set.
Hopefully by playing these close recent matches he'll be warmed up for a great
run at the US Open. Here is the description of the match from the tournament
website.

Martin Is Out After A First Set Blast
Monday, August 23, 2004
By Michael R. Sisak
msisak@...
Todd Martin, the lanky, gray-trimmed former United States Open champion,
withered in the cool Commack breeze after burning through the opening set of his
first round match with Jurgen Melzer, of Austria, at the TD Waterhouse Cup,
Monday night.
Martin, 34, opened the match with two consecutive aces and snatched the first
set in 28 minutes, 6-1. The momentum quickly evaporated. Martin went down a
break point in the second set, broke back, then lost serveÊagain -- a pattern of
defeat repeated again in the third set as Melzer took both frames, 6-3.
"I intended to play more tournaments to prepare myself for the U.S. Open," said
Martin, who took the U.S. Open title in 1999. "This tournament was good enough
to give me a wild card, so I will have had some competition before next week."
The loss pushed Martin's season singles record to 10-14 and continued a downward
spiral that has prompted him to contemplate retirement.
"I must admit that is has been on my mind now and then, now more after this
loss," said Martin, whose reserved style is reminiscent of the classic,
tight-stroking and modest-serving players of the 1960s and 1970s. "However, I'll
know when it is time and I won't stay any longer than when reality sets in."
Melzer, currently ranked No. 48 in the annual ATP Tour standings, appeared
frazzled early as he disputed calls made on serves by a far linesman. The same
linesman later caught the ire of Martin, who was called out on several returns.
"He was tough to play, and his experience showed the entire match," Melzer said.
"I had a tough time playing under the lights, since I haven't been in many night
matches. Once I made the adjustment, I turned things around. Melzer will play
the winner of Tuesday's match between Igor Andreev of Russia and Albert Costa of
Spain.

My aunt's nephew and his partner made the double sculls finals, but placed

Hard to believe that the Americans are out of the tennis competition now....

Thanks for the word on Todd. I'm hoping to see him here in a few weeks. He
usually attends Mal's Gala each September. Nice to see Todd considered
both "notable and popular"!

Anyway, I noticed Todd is playing in another warmup for the US Open. He was
given a wildcard and will play Jergen Melzer on center court tonight at 7:00. I
saw him play Melzer at the NASDAQ and it should be a tough but winnable match
for Todd. Here is the tournament website.

Also watching the rowing (double scull) as my aunt by marriage has a nephew

I was watched the live scores of Todd Martin vs Raemon Sluiter and
it was an incredibly close match. The first set had so many ups and
downs it was incredible. Despite multiple break chances for both
plaers both of them ended up breaking only once to force a
tiebreaker, which Martin won 7-5.

The second set also went to a tiebreaker, which unfortunately
Raemon Sluiter won. In the 3rd set Martin broke Sluiter at 3-3 to go
up 4-3 in the final set. Unfortunately Sluiter broke right back for
4-4. At 5-5 Martin had 2 break points at 12-40 on Sluiter's serve
but Sluiter held him off and won the game. After that Martin held
serve to get to a 3rd tiebreaker.

Martin got some minibreaks to and had 2-0, 4-2, and finally a 5-4
lead with 2 serves. At that point I thought for sure Todd was going
to win. I called my brother and told himt to watch Todd serve out
this great match. I couldn't believe it when the score went to 5-5,
5-6, then finally after hitting refresh over and over 5-7 with Raemon
Sluiter winning the match.

I'm looking at this as good practice for him for the US Open. He
lost first round here last year and look how well he did at the US
Open.

Going on "no mail" effective immediately in anticipation of Hurricane Charley's
expected
arrival in the area tomorrow. Hopefully we will not lose our power as the storm
should
lose strength as it crosses Florida, but I don't want to find Yahoo bouncing me
all over
creation if we do.

Saying a prayer for all in Charley's path!

I don't know his full schedule, but I do know that he has been given direct
entry into the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington DC and of course the US
Open. The DC tournament runs from 8/14- 8/22. Here is the website:

I usually check the new tournaments on atptennis.com and look at the draw to
see if Todd is playing. He pulled out of Cinncinati due to an injury so I hope
he has recovered in time to play in DC and the US Open. Here is the US Open
website in case your interested.
